Saber technique in Star Wars

I just started thinking about it and now I am just wondering .Could it be that LucasFilms hired some genius to make up that special fighting tech in a year or two or did they borrow it from a martial art or did they combine a martial art and some mind power .
Does anyone have an idea or a comment on this .
