Just played your first bit of Knights and are eager to share your impressions with the community? This is the thread for it:)

Well I got KOTOR yesterdat at EB and only had a chance to play a little bit. I got through the first part (possible spoiles) which was to get off the Ender Spire. The first part is basically a tutorial on how to play the game but there is fighting invloved. the system actually is pretty neat. It is a quasi turn based system. The reason I say that is becauase it is turned based esentially but you don't have to wait for people to take there turns and attack it all happens real-time. You can stack up to 4 attacks which it will use in the order they are in I believe or you can just attack and pick what you want to do. Which is what I did so far. Example. You have a regular attack, a rapid fire and let's say some grenades. You can click on rapid fire and it will shoot and then click on grenade and it will launch a greande. Doesn't take much to get used to it and it works well. So far I am impressed and think this is going to be an awesome game.

Whoa buddy...

I've been playing the game for about an hour and a half and I can not even begin to describe it. The story is flat out incredible already. The dialogue with the NPC's and other characters is the best I've seen in any game. The action scenes are truly amazing. When I first used two duel vibroblades against a Sith trooper, it looked as good as the movies. Very cinematic.

The graphics are top-notch.

I can't keep going or I'll start spilling spoilers and this review could last forever.

If anyone has any specific questions, they can PM me. ;)

Sooo addicting. Especially when your stuck and find a way through it, its just so refreshing and keeps you going on and on ... but I have yet to become a Jedi I'm taking my time and taking it all in, been through it for 7 hours. Basically

The one thing I love about the game so far is its fluidity. Its so simple yet engaging. Ususally Video Game RPG can daunting, i.e. Morrowind. That is because I'm not really a fan of the Video Game RPG. However, KOTOR is really something totally different. Well at least in its mechanics and applications. Everything from the interaction with NPC to the battles, is extremely intuitive. This is what I was hoping Morrowind would have been. This is an excellent game to introduce RPGs for those that don't like them or have yet to play them. Good job, Bioware!

Could someone give a detailed analysis and explanation of the combat system? That's what I'm really interested in. Don't be afraid to put spoilers in it (just mark it for those who don't want to see them, and I should tell you that I've never played an rpg in my life)

Welcome to the boards :)

07-20-2003, 01:17 AM
Combat begins when you first lock onto an enemy. If auto-pause is on then the game will pause. At this point you can start queing up attacks (sorry about the spelling). If auto-pause isn't enabled, you can decide to attack or just walk away (you can also do this with auto-pause). Once target is locked, pressing 'A' will engage the enemy with normal attacks. You can also use special attacks like flurry or critical strike/rapid shot or sniper shot.

You cycle through targets with the triggers.

You can disengage combat mode, but the enemy will still attack you.

Combat is actually automatic, so if you set it up right you never have to press a button once. Even on real-time, reflexes and buttons have no impact on the outcome. However strategy and attack selection will greatly affect the outcome.

Also, grenades are greatly useful against some tougher enemies...just don't get yourself in the blast.

Any more specifics feel free to ask.

Great, addicting game.:D

First off I must say star wars is one of the greatest movies, games, and books ever created.

I've played many star wars games and have enjoyed everyone that I have played but they all seem to be missing something. Outcast came very close but lacked in the fact that you never really had anyone control over the growth of Kyle. Well when I heard about kotor I got really excited. Rpg, star wars, jedi, lightsaber oh my. I waited for this game for some time and it finally came out and here is my 20 hour review of this game.

The reason I gave the graphics a 7 is well because they arent really that good. I mean they are better than some but I've seen better.
10 and it deserves it I mean who doesn't get chills when you here that lightsaber flying through the air.

Now this might hurt a bit
I believe out of all the reviews I've seen I rate this lower than anyone else. My reason is because I want to control my player in combat. I mean what is the use of having a lightsaber if you can't even use it. Another problem with game play is the camera its always having to be adjusted. I even told it to stay behind me in the options menu. Number two you have 3 people in your team if you wanted to run from a battle and you are already engaged well you but just start over. There are only a couple of reasons why you would want to run. The main reason is because you are getting killed. Well if you have played it you know that you can't leave an area unless your whole team is with you so you run off to regroup and your other two stay and die so now its only you and you can't leave the area because your other team members are laying on the ground.

Its still star wars

Well if the game play would have been better and the graphics better then the value would have been better. Isn't that why you buy a game.

I guess I will just keep waiting for the perfect star wars game to come out.

If you want to control your charcter FPS style, then I recommend you NOT PLAY RPGS!!!! People, that's the whole point of an RPG! So you're not controlling, but use strategy and have custom charcters!!! You want to FPS, get Jedi Outcast, or wait for Jedi Academy. But don't give it a 6.6 just because you want to FPS. That's just not fair. And just some advice-know your product before you buy it. Thank you.[/rant]

While I respect your opinion, I have to second Boinga: How can you be excited about a rpg, and then don't like it because it has rpg mechanics?

A bit weird, if I might say so :)

07-23-2003, 03:28 PM
While I don't agree with his score, T4 did bring up a valid point. When you get into trouble, there's not much chance of running from it. A few times in the game I really wanted to bail, but couldn't. Because if i would get one guy out, then switch up to get the others out. The orginal character i just pulled out would go chargin back in.

As for the camera always needing to be adjusted, I iked that. In fact, i thought it needed to be more adjustable at times. Cause it was just some cool action i was missing.

But, now that I've been playing the game for bit, I do have some thoughts on it. (scaling on 1-10, 10 being the best).

Graphics- 8: Not too shabby. The glow of the lightsabers and the over all glow of all lighting was great. However it appeared to be very jaggy. I'm curious what platform they were using to take screen shots. And I'm also going to be writing them to see if I can resolve it. So don't worry about this too much.

Sound-10: No surprise here. It's lucasarts. It's Star Wars. It's great sound. Especially the voice acting. Really sold the story.

Gameplay-9: All except for a few glurbs, this is a great playing experience.

Value-10000: Holy geeze this game has a lot of stuff in it. Light side, Dark side, bounties, mini-quests, mini-games, little open ended, and much more. The 50 bucks for this game seems like a deal!

Overall-9.8: Due to just a few bugs/problems I can't give it a 10. But don't look too deeply into it. This is one hell of a game. Easily my favorite game on any console, action, rpg, or otherwise.

Final thoughts: A an excellent game. Though the battle system they have set wound up being a double edged sword. While it was perfect so you can organize your thoughts, plan attacks, and everything else. The ability to save/pause/re-equip at any time leads to a slightly easier than average game. There were only 2 parts so far where I was killed because enemies just overpowered me.

Thankfully the story more than makes up for it. And this game, I foresee, will be played a LOT before I finally put it up to play the sequel(i hope i hope i hope).

I personally want to thank Bioware and Lucasarts for developing, possibly, the best RPG on the planet. I've enjoyed every minute of the 20+ hours I put into this thing and look forward to playing again and again.

Just a response back to everyone who left a reply.
Kotor if I'm not mistaken is what they call a western style rpg. I personally think this was a bad move for this game. I love the story involved with it and it's what keeps me coming back for more. Boinga1 there are plenty of rpgs out there that allow you to control your player the whole game. Ex. Morrowind, coming soon Fable (can't wait to see how that one develops), and Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm not here to make any enemies and I know that games are not going to be perfect. But I'd have to say my biggest complaint is there isn't enough freedom involved in the game. I mean you stay on the same thing the whole game and all the side missions tie into the main mission. I just wish lucas arts would look into making a rpg that lets you have total freedom like Morrowind. Kotor is a great game and i was wrong for judging it harshly because it wasn't what a wanted. I'd change my review to 8 and I stand strong on that because there are some things they could improved on. Thanks

I've had the game every since it came out and I have beat the game but I'll tell you what I still can't comprehend how amazing this game is. My head is still trying to process the increadible story. I'm on my second playthroug and I still just can't get enough of this game.

Well, KotOR is indeed a western style rpg, and so is Morrowind, Fable and Pirates...

They all give you more or less freedom, while japanese rpg's usually have a very tight story corset

I Might be getting it today! yay!

I can't wait! I'll post what I think as soon as I can be wedged out of my seat infront of the TV later. So far, from what i've read, I'm thinking it's good because it's not a typical hack 'n' slash "I have a +43 Klurmincl'cd'seqw sword" thing, like most RPG's. It's more strategy involved so will make it alot more challenging and fun:D

The graphics are awsome aswell. I can't wait!

I've been playing Morrowind, so at first, I found KOTOR very awkward, especially the way fighting is handled. But as I got farther along, and realized I'm controlling three characters, I was glad to take a backseat and just work on the feats, skills, and "remedies" portion of the action.

I thought I wanted GOTY MW for Christmas, but I'm thinking KOTOR (rented for a week and I know I won't complete it!) now!

I'll admit, forever to regret when I first played it (endar spire) I was thinking: what the hell wheres the action the sabers the force the adrenaline. But now a month later I'm like: Oh yea. Fighting throught the star forge is the best part.
(can't say spoiler but if some1 doesn't want to know anything then don't read) All those Dark Jedi coming out of doors slashing at you. I take out my saber and enjoy the taste of their blood!!!!! with out the total review I can say: overall 1000000000000000000000000000.
Three word will some it up:

is there such a thing as kotor anonymous

I can;t get enough of this game. I just got it recently and I am kicking myself for not trying it sooner. I am about half way through and already excited about how I am going to do things differently the second and third time through. I have no had this much fun in a game in a very very long time. I hope they continue this series well past #2.

This game is absolutely cool. but now im havin sooo many probs that id give MY KotOR a 0.1. a normal one earns a 9.5 in my book.oh and Darth Fufu, im gonna assume that the "WWJD" in ur sign. stands for : "What Would Jesus Do?"

(50 more days till Revenge of the Sith :saberr: :saberb: )

04-02-2005, 08:53 AM
probs solved. 9.5 is the score.

This game is incredible. I am still on Dantooine. This planet looks awesome. The voice acting is first class. As are the visuals. Those cutscenes with Darth Malak and Saul are some of my favorites.

The music. It is, in a word, outstanding. :spin:

I just canīt get enough of it! That bad thing is I have to wait until the weekends to play it. :(

i love this game its a lot of fun and its never really the same second time through but the thing i find when i play games the comp normly takes one look at me then runs the other way or the bad guy farts havent been farted at as of yet .but the villan still runs off or doesent attack .today i had rackgols and we all know how they are they were so scared they diddnet even bother attacking .other then that its a lot of fun or the other two party members run off to battle something easier while im off fighting with 10 or 12 mandalorians .even the darn sith runs like my nick name might be canderous in combat and the comp probley knows it ends up dead other then the computer nicking off or running away were it just ends up dead later on .and plus i dont really need to worry about granades going off close by all my badies run of screaming. its all close combat for me even bendik starkiller isent stupid enough to go agaist me. but i guess no one have really had the villan fart at them .thats why i probley injoy the game the comp does not fart at me or the dead people fart but other then the comp not attacking or too scared and dont even have to worry about the dark jedi they run off

that seems to happen alot in the game it doesent attack it rather run off but other then a extremmly WIMPY comp in all the games i play it all ways runs off and even in real life combat the bad guy takes one look and then runs off i even had tanks do that take one look at me then run off. id love it if wasent for the rather wimpy computer too scared to fight the cutsence is fantastic and the voices are great and what is it with garth he's just bonkers you know what i mean well this message is probley long enough so ill add one last thing its a great game

I got the game actually about maybe three weeks ago and am saving up for TSL (I only need seven dollars! :P)

It was so addicting that instead of doing stuff like t.v. or chatting or hanging out with friends, KOTOR basically cancelled my social life for the past two or three weeks. ANd when I get TSL that's a couple more weeks!

I beat the game in about five days using cheats and a walkthrough guide. I absolutely hate Taris, so now whenever I restart to play the game through without cheats, I just play taris with cheats and use the KSE (Save game editor) to not let me die (make "Min1XP = 1" or something) so that invulnerability doesn't mess me up later on in the game. :D

Then I disable the cheats for the other planets. My second to least favorite is Manaan. I don't like the slow suit that you have to wear underwater (any hack to not make you use that would be nice... then you can use weapons and stuff! :)). And it's just a long level and the entire murder mystery quest gives you less experience than killing one of the sith bad guys lol.

But other than Taris and Manaan it was a great game! The modifications enhance the level of fun. :D

I first got KoTOR a lil after it came out, MY grandma got me an Xbox, and the first two games I got were Halo and KoTOR, my friend had gotten it before me. and except for the incredible brightness of tatooine on his TV, it was so fun. I remember I supported the double-bladed saber, and stole Bastila's the moment I could.
My friend likes single bladed. But he changed his mind after he found out the incredible pwnge 2 blades do.

I remember, at the star forge I had 2 10-32 +40 attack weapons. Hahahahaha! I never missed. Once.

This is my first time posting in this area of the forums...well, here goes nothing.

I just rented KOTOR yesterday and I really am enjoying it. I've been playing all day and have already started looking for the 4 Star Maps. I'm having a little trouble though, considering I'm a noob at this. I've already read the spoilers and know what the endings will be, and I'm considering a light side path. I mean, Carth is some video game seckseeness if i've ever seen any. I'll probably keep playing it, but I probably won't finish, considering it's due in a week and I have school to deal with.

10-30-2007, 01:30 PM
The best game ever created.

10-30-2007, 06:31 PM
i played the first kotor and beat it a LONG time ago, but i still remember my first impressions. i'm not the world's biggest rpg fan. actually quite the opposite, partly due to ADD (HA! i can really blame it for something), if it's not fast and doesn't kill you if you step around the wrong corner in five seconds (Counter-Strike, the Battlefield franchise NOT THE FRIGGIN CONSOLE CRAP! the pc versions!, HALO, Tribes 2, JK 2 multiplayer) then I don't even wanna touch it, but this game... it's crazy. i went ahead and let my bro play it first because he's the one that rented it, and when i saw the fighting structure, the customizability, the unbelievably well written story lines. I HAD TO HAVE IT! it's still to this day the only rpg i play (both KOTOR's). i haven't even touched jade empire because a) i'm a SW nut b) i can't let another video game ruin my social life like BF2142, ETQW, and the KOTOR's have. i will probably get it eventually.

04-10-2008, 10:59 AM
I decided to start my navigation through the forum here, and this is my first post. I played and completed KOTOR I back in August of last year, and was completely hooked from my first minute into the game until the last. I'm not an avid gamer, so this was a major time investment for me. I also am married with 2 little ones, work full time, and I'm getting my MBA full time as well, so it's difficult to find time to squeeze in for video games... but man this was well worth it.

I believe the story line is as good as, if not better than, the movies. It really is awesome. And I informed my wife that she has some competition with Bastila.

I'm about to start KOTOR II/TSL this weekend. I know there's been a long gap, but I finally will have some time to dedicate while I am out of town on a business trip. I hope to dedicate a good 40-50 hours to the game while I'm there, and potentially complete it during the trip. I am seriously so pumped!

04-10-2008, 12:12 PM
Haven't played K2 yet, eh? Do me a favor--don't judge it until you've played it at least twice.

As for my first reaction...

Don't remember the first time I played K1. Seriously, I don't. But I remember being amazed by the start of K2, and disappointed by its ending, and then thoroughly confused for a bit, until about a year or two later when I tried to piece together all the cut content and such. Still haven't figured out everything, of course, but I'm getting there.

04-10-2008, 12:14 PM
I won't judge too quickly...

Can you explain what C8-42 is? I see that you said it's a comic and novel adaptation... is it also a game?

04-25-2008, 01:10 AM
Do me a favor--don't judge it until you've played it at least twice.

So true, there are so many possibilities and different combinations depending on which path you take, and what gender you are in the game.

"Character models are FUGLY.It's 7 years old, cut it some slack.

I wonder if I can find some good mods to fix that... Just having more than eight or nine faces to choose from for starters would go a looooong way..."No worries about this, though. There are several, and I mean it, mods that add more characters to choose from (including aliens).

12-27-2010, 02:36 AM
I fell in love with it the first time I played through, really. The love has magnified over the years, with the help of fanfiction, fanart, and of course the wonderful mods people have made, but it was finally a game that said "you're a Jedi, these are your companions, this is what you have to do, find a way to do it. Have fun."

TSL has grown on me a bit more (I disliked it a lot when I first went through), playing as a female my second time around really helped, but the first game was just one of those that got me within the first moments of gameplay.

07-04-2012, 05:41 AM
KOTOR is one of my all-time favorite games. Each time playing it has been rewarding, but the 1st time I played through this masterpiece was a unique experience.
