What system is that? I'm confused...

Eldritch, did you get an Alienware?

And to All, what should I get?
ATI Radeon 9800 256MB or the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB. I heard about Nvidia fudging their score on system mark. The 5900 was "drawing only the visible portions of Game 4 programmable shader test, and not the entire scene. This gave the Nvidia card high frame rate scores - at least compared with those of ATI videocards, which have always drawn the entire scene." - Maximum PC Aug. 03

What do you guys think?

Oh and how do you make a sig? What are the parameters and stuff. And how do I insert it? Thx!

And, I operate with Windows XP and Linux Mandrake 9.1 :)

Yep. :D Area-51, boy. :^P

You use a image editing program like Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, Photosuite... Paint (if it comes to that - should be as a last resort ONLY) to create a sig. The dimensions for the LF sig used to be 500x80 pixels max, but the new system doesn't have any limits.
Still, you shouldn't make it TOO big. Take a look at some of the sigs you see around here, and gauge it for yourself.

yolkboy
08-09-2003, 03:50 AM
Thanks guys :) I have Paint and it doesn't even compare to Photoshop. I used Photoshop at my school all the time. I won't be using it to make a sig I guess because I don't really like the program. It's just not as powerful. I guess I'll have to wait till I get to school :D Is there a student price that I can buy Photoshop? Maybe for $200 or so?

Dude, you hooked your computer up to car speakers? Sweet! You ought to take that a bit further and stick your comp in your car! At one of my Mustang forums this guy rigged up something like that inside his Mustang. It's sweet as hell. Here's some pics.
http://www.azcomps.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=carcomp

As for my computer, I've got it hooked up to the Yamaha stereo system in my room. I never ever touch my CDs anymore because of it, I can just play the mp3s off my computer. But the stats are as follows. Nothing *too* impressive but it keeps up reasonably with most of the latest games.
900 mghz AMD Duron processor
MSI KT17 Turbo motherboard
512 megs of DIMM ram
64 meg video card (GeForce4 MX 420)
17" Proview monitor
40 gig HD
52x CD ROM (hot tip: anything faster than 30x just spins too damn fast to read and makes things lag. Take it from me, I learned the hard way.)
Sony CD Burner (reads at 32x, burns up to 8x)
Saitek X45 Joystick (this thing rocks, the throttle and joystick are seperate)
Microsoft laser mouse, can't remember the model
And a Cable modem suscribed to Comcast.

They were both fudging their scores. nVidia was just doing it more so than ATi.

But once it's all said and done, the cards are actually about equal. It just depends on what game you play. If you play games that are made for nVidia cards, get the GF FX. If you play games made for ATi, then get the Radeon. That's basically how it works.

I know. I'd love to do that to my mustang. But I've got bigger probs to deal with first. The thing is a 1985 GT so it's almost as old as I am. Leaks coolant, makes a funny scraping sound when it idles sometimes. I'm thinking of either giving the whole thing an engine rebuild or just going down to a dealer and trading it in for a '96, '97, or somewhere around that year range. Another Mustang, either a GT or a Cobra. Just so long as the thing has 8 cylinders. I don't see the point in having a V6 sportscar.

As for the stereo to the computer, it was real easy. All you need is a cheap $8 cord you can find at Radioshack. On one end it has a single jack like a headphone jack. This will fit directly into your sound card where you normally would plug in your speakers. On the other end of this cord it branches off into two plugs, those red and white ones for stereos. I just popped the thing in the CD slot of my tuner so when I push CD it switches to the computer's sound. It's great. I play all my games in 6-speaker surround sound. I've got two waist-high speakers at the corners of the "front" of my room, and some RCA wall speakers above them. Then behind me are two more RCA wall speakers in the two corners above my bed. Now all I need is a sub-woofer and I'll be set. I'm not sitting directly in the middle of this whole setup when I'm on my computer, but that's because that spot is reserved for my TV.

Wow...there sure are a LOT of good comps among the LF community...I'm pretty surprised. Another thing I noticed is that most of the comps that have Ati video cards also have P4's. In my opinion theres a very logical explanation. Don't take this the wrong way because its not meant as an insult, rather a personal opinion. Ok. Ati has suck ass video cards and Intel's P4 line sucks ass as well. So they match.

nVidia and AMD for life!!

well... dont wanna start a flame war... but:-
Intel are better than Amd, at least they are faster, have more memory bandwidth and they overclock better.

Nvidia have retaken the lead with the FX 5900 ultra, but nvidia's business methods are dubious at best and their driver support is laughable (see N-Force Chipset driver fiasco). Its worth noting that Ati are still using 15micron technology, while Nvidia have gone ahead and started using 13micron technology. If and when Ati make the jump you can expect them to leap into the lead again. (In other words Ati does more with less.)

If i had the choice though I'd go with Intel & ATi and thats coming from an avid AMD enthusiast... ie. ME. ;)

I like invidea cause ATI has had some sh*t drivers in the past. Everyone makes mistakes and both companies have made them. I'm sticking with Nvidia though. Also Intel is cool and all but AMD processors are cheaper also the motherboards for them are cheaper.... whats not to love?

EDIT: Not trying to flame (don't see anything in this post worthy of being called a flame:p ) so plz don't take it as a flame;)

I think the max res is 1600x1200 at 75herts

I run everything at 1280x1024 at 85herts

It cost 155 bucks but since I got it online I had to pay for shipping and it came out to 244 bucks...which is still a great deal...these things can cost 900 dollars.

The thing with Nvidia is you will love them and all but once you really learn about ATI and use them you will never want geforce again.

From whatI have read and seen Intels will O/C much better then an AMD as the AMD run way to hot even at stock speeds. And if you want proof just go check out all the top scores at Madonion.com and you will see at the top boxes run Intel chips.

No BS, just facts.

Like i said,, My 1.8A will do 2.7 That is a 900mhz jump. It will do it at stock voltage and the temp does not rise at all. Show me an AMD that will do that?

Don't get me wrong , AMD are nice but Intel will always have the upper hand.

But once it's all said and done, the cards are actually about equal. It just depends on what game you play. If you play games that are made for nVidia cards, get the GF FX. If you play games made for ATi, then get the Radeon. That's basically how it works.

Oh... Which Games are for what cards? Like if I'm going to be playing JA what card should I get? And what about Half Life 2 and Quake 3, etc...

RoguePhotonic

What I like about ATI cards is they are really stable and ATI supports them very well...

I also like that the newer ones have smooth vision...so even with antialiasing off you don't have half the problem with aliasing with ATI as you do with geforce.

I want to get a good gaming PC, aka, one that will run at least JKII and JKA, but is there a laptop that could get the job done that's not too pricy?

PS- IS an S3 Graphics ProsavageDDR card good? That's what I have on my comp, and it runs JKII perfectly. I just want to know if it's a decent card.

I would be extremely surprised if a laptop had anywhere near enough graphics power to play either JK2/JKA... onboard graphics always suck terribly, and the lcd monitor wont help gameplay either.

S3 are usually pretty crap video cards and like was said, on board video ( what laptops have) is usually not that good.

Now that being said.. Alienware makes a laptop jus tfor gaming and I heard it kicks ass. But I think it cost more then 2K.

ProsavageDDR sucks big time. That was what my pc came pre-installed with. Sure it runs jkii, just fine, but look forward to a long time of having to make tech support calls, and downloading patches to run this and that. And do not ever consider upgrading your OS, because the ProSavage will not support it. I was all set to upgrade my graphics card to a GeForce FX 5200 , but I found out that my power pack would not support it. I could replace the power pack, but the card was expensive as it is. I would have to say that I am doing pretty good with the ATI Radeon 9800. If I ever change it again, I'll just upgrade the power pack and get a GeForce FX 5200 , but hey, if it ain't broke... why fix it?
