View Full Version : when did Kyle's accent change?

anyone else notice that Kyle's accent is different? it has a bit more of a british sound to it at times. you catch snippets of it from time to time, but it is definitely not the regular American accent he had in JO.

Yeah, I noticed that too, maybe it happened in the couple years between JO and JA:D

Huh... Never even noticed. I'll go back for another listen, but I've played through the game (both endings) and never gave it a second thought. I'm just amazed they got the same actor to do two consecutive games (in which ever DF/JK incarnate had a different Kyle).

Anyway explinations:

1). Kyle spent too long a time on vacation around accented dialects.

2). He purposely changed his voice to fit into his new good-guy image.

3). The voice actor is British and couldn't hold the accent as well as he did in JO.

And on a personal note, I love Jennifer Hale (the voice of female Jaden -- and Bastilla in KOTOR). She's got this awesome varriance in her emotions. She can be soft and guile one moment, or sinister and intense the next... She's just brilliant.

Jennifer Hale has been in ALOT of games and TV shows.

Yeah, she's in everything now (she's a direct contender to Tara Strong, who also is in a lot of media).

I'm glad she's coming back for MGS:Twin Snakes, too. Wouldn't be the same without her, though it sounds as if she's sansing the accent.

And speaking of accents, I listened through some samples of Kyle in JA. I can't hear the British influence you guys are complaining about... Were there any particular scenes where you could detect it?

I preferred Jason Court in JK, to be honest. Kyle in JO/JA sounds a bit too gravelly. But that's just me. I never noticed any British intonations while playing, but it doesn't really bother me anyway.

I'm just glad the villain this time didn't have a British accent. It's become so cliched in recent years, I know who the villain is as soon as they open their mouth...

On accents, you know who I feel sorry for the most? Wedge Antilles...

That man has seen more accent changes than Halle Berry in the first X-Men movie.

First they had his voice double (Rober Foster I believe) do a poorly maintained British accent (Rogue Squadron, Galactic Battlegrounds), then he was Scottish (X-Wing Alliance)...

And then Wedge himself (Denis Lawson) lent his tallents to Rogue Leader, throwing a wrench in the works of Wedge by giving him a hardened American accent. Though they have someone differnet doing Wedge in JA, at least they're just starting to give him some consistencies in his inflects.

But as a whole, I think Wedge has seen a hundred or so different accent changes throught the inception of video game entertainment. British, Scottish, Russian, Japanese, Lebonese, Polish, Itallian, New York, Minesota, Canadian, and . . . Oh yes... I believe he also tried his hand at Imperial (Star Wars equivolent of piss-poor British). Oh, and I can't forget about Jamaican and Indian. Perhaps even a bit of Trinidad, too.

Poor, poor Wedge.

Was anyone else disapointed that whenyou played a rodian (or any other alien race), you didn't get the alien voice. I think it would have been cool if you spoke in Rodian and had subtitles on the bottom of the screen!

I don't know about Kyle's accent, but about the voices....anyone besides me liked Phil Tanzini?
I think male Jaden darkside was great...
haven't played female though.

I like Jennifer Hale's voice.. Liked it better in KOTOR as Bastilla!

Best voice actor ever is David Warner. Period. I want to hear him in more games.

If you're wondering, he was the guy that did Irenicus from BG2. He also played "Evil" in Time Bandits.

Yah boy. Wedge has real Trini inflections...

lol, where'd you get that from?

But seriously, I thought the "Imperial" accent was supposed to be from cor.. Imperial centre (I can't spell the real name). Jaden, (from there) sounds nothing like it. Oh well. Some of the dialogue was really stupid tho. "He might belong to the darkside..." and others... This is said by a char that has full points in rage, grip, drain and lightning...

But The actor Jennifer Hale was good. I just didn't like some of the dialogue and the accent. Blech.

Irenicus was great, but so was Sarevok. Didn't Mark Hamil do a bit in Icewind dale?

I always though Irenicus had been hard done -I wanted to give the queen a swift kick off that tree, she deserved it.

Heheh. Just being facetious. My point is that poor Wedge went through a lot of real accent changes. Mostly because Denis Lawson is Scottish, yet he did an American accent for ANH and ESB as Wedge. But then he let it slip a little in RotJ, but he sounded a bit on the Imperial side.

So when it came time for the games, the voice producers didn't know exactly how to execute his accent. First was Imperial, then Scottish (very bad Scottish), and finally, American.

To my knowledge, Wedge's vocal incarnations never really indulged in a Trinidad accent. Though that would make things pretty interesting if you ask me...

"The sheilds are still operational!"
"I be getting no readings mon -You WRong! Charge!" hehe:)

But seriously, Kyles doesn't sound english. The reason his voice is different from DF2 tho is he's getting on a bit... Grey haired action hero.

He sounds more "cultured" than he did back in JO. All that time of teaching and responsibility did him a lotta good, making him even more respectable-like.

You obviously have never seen some of the ugly, fat, tattooed Brits I saw spending their holidays in holland... giggling at the porn on the shelves next to the kids computer programs -terribly embarrassing. I always wondered where in England they could be from, because I've never met any at home...

On 2nd thought, maybe placing porn cds next to kiddies' learning game is rather strange. Maybe the dutch think their both "educational".;)

Well hey, I said Kyle sounds more cultured. Never said anything about Brits being of the like.
