CURRENT STATUS: DOWN(?) @ 108.178.55.189:29070

11/13/14
Over the past year and a half I've had a rather busy schedule but each time I tried to access the server I was unable to. Emails to ET haven't provided any helpful info. Sadly I don't have time to fix it, so I'm just going to say for now a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped the server over the years. I'd love to bring it back some day, I just don't have the energy to focus on it right now. It's been lots of fun, though! MTFBWY

6/18/14
Been busy for the last year, but I am working on getting the server back up. It seems to have been down for most of the past 3 1/2 months, for which I sincerely apologize. Since I'd be busy with school I really didn't have time, but now I'm trying to see if ET can get me access again. I am wondering if perhaps something went wrong with a server transition. In any case, I'm sorry for the delays and hopefully we'll be back up again before the end of the summer (fingers crossed).

9/10/12
The server should be back up and working again at 108.178.55.189:29070.

9/9/12
I've been busy lately with a summer internship that turned into a year long residency. I am not sure what's going on with the ET server, as I haven't checked it in several months. I am hoping to find out soon whether the server is up, where it's at, or if it's down and not coming back (hopefully that's not the case, but we'll see). In the meantime I want to thank EscapedTurkey for hosting us for so long and for the many people who have played on our server over the past few years.

5/18/12
I just learned that EscapedTurkey, our hosting company, is shifting their servers around.
The new one is in Chicago, so there may be a new IP.

I don't have time to update the web page and the JediTracker yet (probably won't for awhile, but hopefully I can do that this summer).

If the old IP is no longer working, PLEASE try the following one instead (and add to your favorites):

108.178.55.189:29070

3/4/10 WE'RE BACK! THANK YOU ESCAPED TURKEY!!! (http://www.escapedturkey.com)

Yes, without any interruption in service, ET, our benevolent host
has decided to give the Meatgrinder a new lease on life, as a sponsored Jedi Academy server. As such we'll be throwing in some plugs to their service and putting some unobtrusive ads on the page out of respect (much like we did for JediServers, our first sponsor, back in the day).

This is great news for all of you who haven't had a chance to join us yet,
or those who were itching to come back. I for one am very pleased with
this news and can't thank them enough.

As for this thread, it is becoming unwieldy, so I may be starting a new one
to provide the latest info and status on the server. For now, consider this a bit of nostalgia. Add the Meatgrinder to your JA favorites!

3/1/10, 4:50pm CST

The server is canceled. Until I can afford to spend the monthly fee for a high speed rental on top of everything else, I decided this was the best course of action. It's been fun! The server appears to still be up as of this afternoon, but I'm talking with EscapedTurkey to find out if this is just a glitch, or if it will automatically "run out" at the next billing period (March 13th/14th). So if you see it on there and it's accessible, enjoy. If not, thanks for the memories.

If the latter is the case, then you've got a few more days, if not, then it's curtains for now. MTFBWY!

1/22/10

Happy New Year! I forgot to update this thread in awhile, but anyway, I can't afford to pay for this server month to month anymore, so I'm really, really taking it down at the end of this month (February). I hope you've enjoyed the extra months. I kept forgetting to cancel my subscription. If someday in the future I get more money to throw at it, I might. But I think the Meatgrinder has had a good run. Thanks everyone for the fun games!

11/14/09

I figure I can afford to let the server continuing running through December. But once we hit January I may be strapped for cash again, so I may have to finally cut it off indefinitely.

We'll see.

EXTENDED the server for another month of renewal. Enjoy!

7/19/09

A "Vent" server for the game is now up! So now you can voice chat with
other players (assuming they're logged in as well).

Get Ventrilo HERE (http://www.ventrilo.com).

Vent Server: vent8.gameservers.com
Port #: 4544

Channel "A" Meatgrinder

6/19/09

The server appears to be up and running smoothly! Map cycles are being modified,
but overall it should be set for the summer in terms of getting things going. Join
anytime!

6/17/09

Yep, folks, I finally broke down and rented a server. So, after eons of downtime, and my recent attempts at hosting sporadically off my home PC, I've thrown in for a decent server from EscapedTurkey for the summer.

Now I repeat, this is ONLY for the summer. I probably won't have the cash to spare or time to monitor it after this, so enjoy it while you can!

I'm currently uploading files and tweaking settings, so if you try it now, it may be buggy, but bear with me! I hope to have it smoothed out and running well by this weekend.

However, if you're curious and want to try it out, please go here:

http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/server_status.shtml

The trackers should be updated, and I will restart it once a day to make sure things are working properly. Please shoot me an email or PM if things are not looking right.

The rotation should be two rounds of siege (six matches), followed by a run through of the JA basic maps, then the JA Bonus map pack, then I CTF (then the CTF bonus map). There's a "mayhem" map thrown in there every once in awhile too (a Duel map set to FFA, meaning it's basically a mosh pit!).

Dismemberment is enabled, and tons of Star Wars skins are supported... I will also try to get some Siege Destroyer/Asteroids Mod setup for later this summer (if they'll allow it).

Here's the IP:
208.43.15.76:29070

6/9/09

I'm introducing a friend to the game this weekend, so look for the server then!

6/3/09

Okay, I'm a little late, but the server is UP NOW, SAME IP AS IN MY SIG.

68.53.58.195:29070

5/31/09

[Post cleanup, I'm deleting a lot of the old updates in this post, but see
the end of the thread for more]

=================================
Old Updates:

EscapedTurkey is back and apparently faster than before, so Meatgrinder is back at full steam, hooray!

There is now a Downloads Page on Strategic Academy that has all the mods we ever use or recommend. You can view the server status and link to the download page from here (http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/downloads.shtml). We now run OJP "Enhanced" (gameplay changes with a new saber system, ledge grabbing and other interesting changes) on Fridays, which OJP Basic (same gameplay as basejka, plus fixes, tweaks and new game mode options) the rest of the week.

--------------------------
OJP (Open Jedi Project Mod) and I have joined forces!

Meatgrinder OJP Server is now the place to go!

RazorAce, who recieved a server from EscapedTurkey in gratitude for his tireless work on the mod has generously agreed to let me admin his server, and the new name reflects this change.

So expect the same kind of hassle free gameplay you've come to expect, plus the speed and freshness of a regularly updated mod that acts as an unofficial patch to JA!

This 26 man server is fast! So come on over and have some fun!

The server rotates the basejka maps... CTF, Siege, Holocron and Jedi Master, with other modes available on request, including the JA Bonus Pack maps and Siege Destroyer. Jawa MP Mod supported! Runs the latest Beta of the OJP Basic Mod (nothing required to download!). Help test this great and useful mod while having fun.

***

Keep in mind this is a BETA mod (though it has come a long way), so there may be some bugs in it. So far though I see it as an improvement over basejka, and unlike some other mods, it doesn't contain anything abusive or gameplay changing that would ruin the "purist" gameplay you've come to expect from my server (it is NOT an abusive admin mod like so many others).

---------------------
The latest IP is also shown in my signature.

I'm using:

-Custom Bots
-Debugmelee (grapples/kicks w/ melee)
-Idle Saber Damage (realism)
-Saberdamagescale 2 (useful & balanced against guns)
-Full Dismemberment (as long as you have it turned on client-side as well! cg_dismember <#>).
-Bot challenges (turn off one blade to challenge a bot in FFA)
-NO RULES! (Except killtrackers must be set to silent or off & teams must be as balanced as possible!)

Special OJP Settings* (when using this mod):

-Autoteambalancer (teams are forced to be balanced every 30 seconds, meaning people will get switched if they don't switch)
-Tab Bots (Bots play Siege, use different player classes, completing objectives and play other gametypes more intelligently and a bit more human-like)
-"Gibs" from Explosions When you nail someone with an explosive or say the primary Flechette or secondary Concussion Rifle, they get dismembered, often into multiple bits. Long falls can also "gib." Looks a bit funny sometimes, but kinda cool other times.

-Teamvotekick Using:

\callteamvote kick <name>

in the console you can kick teammates who are screwing around and not helping (vote Yes or No like you normally would right in the menu). This prevents vote-kick abuse, while allowing the game to flow better.

-Holocron FFA Just like the classic Jedi Outcast game mode. Works on all the FFA maps in basejka.
-Jedi Master Just like the classic Jedi Outcast game mode. This one works on ANY map, including addon maps, due to some auto-magic ness that RazorAce built in. Very cool.
-Exploit fixes Now people can't screw up Siege games so easily using known bug exploits. Much more balanced now.

Note: Not all OJP features are always in use, sometimes they get changed for testing purpose or stability due to bug fixing.

Edit (May 13, 2006): The only "required" files we run on the server typically are the OJP Basic files, occasionally the JA Bonus Map Pack, and that's usually about it, though it will help to have any of the files featured on this (new) page:

http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/downloads.shtml

(the below information is outdated, but feel free to try any of those if you wish!)

----------
Full list of current mods (all obtainable from pcgamemods.com, lucasfiles.com or elsewhere such as jk3files.com that MAY be in use on the server (none most of the time):

(removed "Wampa Joust" and "Arena of the Rancor" since I haven't used them in ages, and removed "KOTOR Flight School" since I hear there's a newer, better version anyway)

-Asteroids Mod (Created with the help of Raven, advanced ship combat in space! Includes improved edition of Siege Destroyer Assault!)
http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?s=&action=file&id=464

-Siege Destroyer (An older version of the map, not as good as Destroyer2 in Asteroids, but will be used in its place until I can get the latest OJP linux which includes the Asteroids code!)http://lucasfiles.com/?s=&action=file&id=439

-JA Bonus Mappack (Adds 4 new FFA maps, 1 new CTF and 1 new Duel map to the rotation. An early Xmas present from Raven Software!)
http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?s=&action=file&id=381

-JKII_voices_3.0.pk3 (UPDATE. gives the unique taunts back to JK2 characters and gives multiple taunts in Duel/PowerDuel)
http://www.pcgamemods.com/3043/

-JKII_ffa.pk3 (JK2 FFA converted map pack)
http://www.pcgamemods.com/2320/

-JKII_duel.pk3 (JK2 Duel converted map pack)

-JKII_ctf.pk3 (JK2 CTF converted map pack)
http://www.pcgamemods.com/2319/

-ithorian.pk3 (Ithorian MP skin)
http://www.jk2files.com/file.info?ID=16530

-OJP (OpenJediProject) Basic (various tweaks and fun features like RGB sliders for custom Jedi)
http://ojp.jediknight.net/

-DDS Ibots Smarter, Faster, Angrier bots!
http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?action=file&id=376

-DDS Re-routed Bots navigate the FFA and CTF maps much more intelligently and are therefore more challenging.
http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?action=file&id=375

-Jawa team skins Makes the Jawa skin selectable in the Profile menu with icons, and gives him red and blue skins for TFFA and CTF. Never get confused again!

Those two seems interesting...

The JKII voices one, if I play MP, can only I hear the voices?

Kurgan

I have the voices patch going, so *I* can hear it. You won't hear them unless you have it installed as well.

But if you connect you can try to download it if I have sv_allowdownload 1 on.

I may turn it off sometimes due to lag though, sorry. Get it from pcgamemods.com

It was nice! Especilly the "KOTOR flight school" map.

Glad you had fun! I tried that tweak that InsaneSith posted, but it didn't seem to help me any (though Darth Vader said it helped him a great deal).

So undecided if I'm going to keep it up when I use that map.

Anyway, updated this thread with links to all those mods.

Too bad there isn't an easy way to put the URL of this thread into my MOTD!

Your server has bots now. lol.

I'll join tomorrow.:)

Kurgan
10-08-2003, 05:03 PM
See that's the thing, why do people never want to join a server that has only bots in it?

If nobody ever does this, then there will never be any players in a server (think about it). And I can reasonably only spend so many hours a day sitting in my server hoping to attract people to use it.

A person should join, play for awhile, and if others see them and join, etc. Consider it a warm-up. But it seems like some people only want to join a game that is already 15/16 (meaning that full servers will always stay full and nobody will ever join an empty server).

My logs are full of people who join, then leave seconds later (not even enough time to say anything to them). They could save themselves a lot of time simply by clicking on "server info" before they join.

LoL... anyway, pet peeve of mine, not aimed at you per se. This isn't a problem just with JA, but all online games I've ever played.

Kurgan
10-09-2003, 06:18 AM
Added Rancormad (Arena of the Rancor) that was recently posted on LucasFiles.com to the list of mods I may use on my server!

Before i join your server, i always check if theres anyone inside, if not. I'll go join other servers.:D

Its not fun playing with bots.

|GG|Carl

Hey, kurgan, how did you debug melee on your server?

And I think you were right about the flying patch. Even if it wasn't a big change.

Kurgan
10-10-2003, 01:50 AM
Before i join your server, i always check if theres anyone inside, if not. I'll go join other servers.

Its not fun playing with bots.

I know if you're playing on the internet, you'd rather play humans, so would I, so would most people, BUT, as I've said...

By that logic nobody will EVER join my server, because somebody HAS to be the first one to join and patiently wait for others.

So if you really want to play somebody on my server, you may have to wait a bit.

At least you click server info though and don't just join and immediately leave.. that bugs me when people do that. ; p

About half the time I'm running a server I'm also sitting here at the computer doing something else. If I see somebody join, I will usually say hi to them (from the console) and try to join the game to play with them. But it takes a little while for JA to load up for me, so if they immediately leave they missed their chance to play with at least one person (myself). So if people would be a little more patient... ; )

The other thing is, people don't need to complain about "lag" within the first 30 seconds of a person joining. That is normal...
After a bit it clears up.

To use debugmelee do this:

seta g_debugmelee "1" (put that in your server cfg file).

To USE it on a server that has it enabled, simply don't assign any force points to Saber Attack (Saber Offense) in your profile.

Crow_Nest

Before i play JO or JA, i always refresh the server list using all seeing eye.

But now, jk2 is history. Very few people plays it.:(

Kurgan
10-10-2003, 10:33 AM
I don't know about that, at least as many people have been connecting to the JK2 master server in the last month as have done so for JA, assuming those stats are accurate.

I fired up a server (For the first time) a few days ago and one guy joined fairly quickly.

I updated one of the links to the vehicle steering tweak (I got a new one sent to me that I have yet to try but it may be easier for you).

Just now at during a duel map some stupid gh3y n00b always lame and spam teh throw, drain + attack while chatting.

And always repeat of force powers. like grip and drain.

you need to edit yoru server.cfg file a bit kurg :p 30 min duel limits with bots is horrible, cause it takes 30 min, they loose each other on some maps, plus regular players get kicked when new players join, and the bots stay in some cases :)

That shouldn't be right, there are always 2 slots free for humans to join and bots should always be kicked when new people come in.

I'll double the time limit for duels and only use two bots (or remove them entirely) for that gametype. Thanks for pointing this out!

|GG|Crow_Nest:

Kurgan, can you disable the grip, lightning and drain?

If I did that, I'd have to disable heal, mind trick and absorb as well...

Just use Absorb and you won't be affected by those powers.

while chatting.

If it's a duel, you should be fighting, not chatting during the battle, no offense.

And always repeat of force powers. like grip and drain.

Absorb and he will just waste his mana.

if i were the admin, i'd kick him out and ban him from the server.

But this is my server, and I say that's fair. You just have to adapt to his tactics. Trust me, it can be done.

The only way I can see your server in the browser is if I enter the IP as a "Favorite."

The ping isn't great, but there are a lot of others listed with much higher pings.

But the same is for OC-3 server... However, I get an inordinately low ping (under 50 sometimes). If I don't enter it in the "favs," I don't see it.

I'm convinced that there is a flaw in whatever protocol is allowing servers to be listed in the browser. After doing a list and then opening the console, there is a prompt that says something about X# of servers not listed because of packet drops or something or other... I'll have to pay closer attention next time.

Sorry, you shouldn't need to download it to join (others have joined without downloading it), and I realized this so I turned downloads off.

You should be able to join fine now.

But if you're interested, Admidala from Chop Chop sent it to me, it's an improved version of bot routes for FFA1 (Vjun) so the bots don't get stuck anymore!

See attachment below (just unzip and put in your base folder to use it with mp/ffa1):

SkinWalker

I would think that the bot routes is a server side modification and wouldn't need to be placed in the client side folder. At least... it seemed to run very efficiently on me last night!

Those bots kicked butt... The bad thing about bots is theres no human failings... like overlooking a hiding spot. If you can see the bot, the bot sees you.

If it was saber-only, I would kicked those gunwhore bots butts though :D

Hey Kurgan... decided to move this discussion from the "Open Letter to Raven/LucasArts" thread over here regarding bots on your server...

Why would you rather sit in spectator mode or run around in an empty level than play with a few bots?

I don't mind warming up with a bot while I'm waiting for someone to join, but the last thing I want to do when going online is to join a server with a 100+ ping and play against three other master class bots with no ping. And when another player joins it's a total drag having two other bots to deal with.

To me, going online is about interacting with other people. I'd be completely fine simply practicing moves by myself until someone shows up if it's a server where I want to play, because I know someone will show up eventually and that I'll likely have a really great time while I'm there.

I've joined your server once, Kurgan... it was the only time I checked it when there was only people playing. I have it in my favorites folder and always check the player list when firing up QT or ASE to see if anybody's there (especially you). Several times I've seen one person with three other bots on there, and I've almost talked myself into joining but didn't. Now if when I did join the other two bots disappeared as well, then I would definitely stop in and challenge that person until someone else showed up.

I don't need there to be 6+ people... I've had awesome experiences with only one or two others. It's just that at any given time there are 50+ other servers with one or two people and no bots that I can join - so why would I want to play bots? It's not fun.

Your server is pretty well known around here... I'd have to suggest that one of the reasons you don't see more traffic is because half of the slots are taken up by bots. Just my personal feeling though. Drop it to two and see what happens.

----

btw... do you use other names when you play? I look for you everytime I fire up QT or ASE, but maybe we're just on different time schedules.

So does this mean you don't want to play bots because you're afraid of losing?

Bots will always have zero ping and you know what? Playing an admin is "just as unfair" because we'll always have pings way lower than people joining (not zero, but say 5 is not unusual).

And again, having no bots just means that the one person
who joins to wait for others is just going to get bored that
much faster and leave.

To me, going online is about interacting with other people.

Of course, multiplayer is about fragging other characters controled by humans. But why did they put bots into the MP game?

Simple, because not every game is going to be full all the time.

If you just want to practice, Solo Game is there for you.

I'd be completely fine simply practicing moves by myself until someone shows up if it's a server where I want to play, because I know someone will show up eventually and that I'll likely have a really great time while I'm there.

Which is exactly why I have them. Practicing moves on walls or health pacs isn't very useful. Rather practicing on moving targets that are trying to kill you is very useful. ; )

I've joined your server once, Kurgan... it was the only time I checked it when there was only people playing. Glad to hear it, but you didn't catch me at a good time. Usually I have 0-2 players in there, but other times I've had 4-6. On "good days" (days when the in-game browser is actually displaying my game) I get a steady stream of players all day long.

And I always have bots, so those people are able to join, play and have fun fine, even if I'm not there.

I don't need there to be 6+ people... I've had awesome experiences with only one or two others. It's just that at any given time there are 50+ other servers with one or two people and no bots that I can join - so why would I want to play bots? It's not fun.

Your time, your choice, I'm just pointing out why avoiding servers that have bots is not as productive as you say.

I said it before, I'll say it again, SOMEBODY has to join a server to start the "waiting game." Otherwise every server will always be empty, forever. Is the admin of the server just supposed to sit there and wait in an empty game for people to join?

People are just too impatient. If a game lags for a fifth of a second they scream "lag!" if they lose one point they yell "lame!" if anything isn't perfectly how they want it they leave. If you're running a mod they don't want to download they'll disconnect. If a player is beating them they'll callvote/kick. ; p

That's their choice but it just gets annoying when you're putting up a server for others to use. So I'm happy for the feedback, I just think I have a right to respond here as well.

9 times out of 10 the admin is not there, because it's a dedicated server. The point is to run it with all the resources so that others can use the game. That's why they put in automated stuff like map cycles and voting. It's because the admin is not expected to sit there and wait for people and beg them to join.

I'm not a doctor of JA who is "on call" 24/7, though I do make an effort to join my own game if I happen to see somebody in there or at least say "hi" so they know I'm around. Just the friendly thing to do. But other times even when I'm watching the console I have better things to do, and sometimes I'll load up JA but by the time I get there they'll have left already.

Besides, there are times even when bots can't help you, in Siege for example. But let's say FFA... bots provide a way to keep people occupied while they wait. You don't have to participate, but if no one does, no one plays, the entire system falls apart.

And I don't know about you, but if I'm going to play bots, I'll take on a group of them, not just one (since you can't really private duel bots) in a FFA. So who would want to go one on one with a bot in FFA? Due to the sheer size of most of the maps you'll just be playing hide 'n' seek with him anyway.

Your server is pretty well known around here... I'd have to suggest that one of the reasons you don't see more traffic is because half of the slots are taken up by bots. Just my personal feeling though. Drop it to two and see what happens.

No, I think the primary reason is that my game isn't displayed most of the time (others have this problem).

I get plenty of players on the days that it gets posted, bots or no bots, and nobody ever complains about bots except on the forums (3 people so far).

Also, if you join up, I'm using improved bots and bot routes (the latter thanks to Amidala) so you'll be getting more than you bargained for anyway, and unless you have the same tweaks I do, it'll be a new experience for you, guarenteed.

See Skinwalker's rave reviews above. ; )

----
btw... do you use other names when you play? I look for you everytime I fire up QT or ASE, but maybe we're just on different time schedules.

Once or twice, but 99.99% of the time I go simply as "Kurgan."

If you don't see me, chances are you're on a different time table than me and you're simply missing all the action (no offense).

Akshara
10-28-2003, 02:52 AM
whOa... down boy. Now don't go getting the wrong idea. I got nothing against you or your server, and was simply sharing an alternate point of view - you did ask why I prefer not to connect to a server with bots...

So does this mean you don't want to play bots because you're afraid of losing?
I'm not afraid of losing... I actually do it quite a bit. I consider losing as a healthy way of improving. One of the reasons we see so much spamming of katas and "red stance only" single saberists is because people are afraid to lose. If there were more people willing to lose, we'd see a lot more interesting and varied matches.

A bot doesn't make mistakes, and takes away some of the thrill and challenge. No spontaneity, and no accidents. I think SkinWalker was trying to say that as well, wasn't he?

Playing an admin is "just as unfair" because we'll always have pings way lower than people joining
Hmmm... that's the third time now you've read something into my post that I didn't say... "you assume too much."

:p

"All is fair in love and war," and this game elicits both from me. Rarely if ever do I feel that anything that happens online is unfair. I'm also not someone who needs a full house to have a good time, nor am I someone who joins a server and then immediately leaves. Very often I'll join either an empty server or one with a single person and try to start something. And I'm well aware of the admin advantage... won't save you though.

If you just want to practice, Solo Game is there for you.
Creating a local server with different game styles using lots of practice bots is how I prepare for going online. I did that nonstop for an entire week practicing with your information from Strategic Academy before logging a single hour online - which I greatly appreciated by the way. So when I finally do go online, I want to interact with people and have a real competitive match to tryout my skills. Bots aren't susceptible to taunts, accidents, mistakes, or emotions - which leads to an unrealistic playing experience.

Practicing moves on walls or health pacs isn't very useful.
One can't work on repetition of keystrokes and timing technique with a bot constantly attacking you. Ragnos is a great solo map because the center fire cauldron makes a good point of reference for practicing spins. What would be really great is to have a training map that has dummies and objects in different locations to practice stirke coordination and combo stringing. Several maps offer jumping platforms, but none have immobile targets to practice aiming.

If you're running a mod they don't want to download they'll disconnect.
I disconnect because the mod is going to take 59 minutes to auto download, when I could go get it from pcgamemods in about 50 seconds and come right back. I really don't understand why auto download has to take so long... I'm on a 1Mbps broadband connection and it takes like an hour or more to auto download a 4Mb saber hilt mod on most servers. I can only imagine what it must be like for 56k or cable broadband users.

But in the case of your server, I've downloaded all of the mods you listed here ahead of time so I'd be prepared when I joined. I've been looking forward to challenging you online because I know it will be fun... but I always wait for other people to show first because I don't want to waste my time for thirty minutes playing bots when I could be playing with others somewhere else.

But next time I see a person on there with a bunch of bots, I'll go ahead and join and see what it's like ok? And if you happen to jump on too, well all the better big boy.

;)

To be on the safe side, don't run any mods except the ones I listed in my second post in this thread.

Update (1/24/04): I had to send the computer to another repair place and they say it will be done sometime in early February (chances of it being finished sooner are slim). Actually Kurgan.. A video card isn't that selfish. If I'm not mistaken your computer needs to load the textures and so on (Especially when playing), and if not enough video memory is present it uses system mem which slows it all down drastically.

Ok Crow, you're the only person to report this, that your controls stop working properly on Siege Hoth.

I have no idea what could cause that or how to fix it. Sorry. Try the technical forum I guess.

I don't have any such problem when joining my own server (and it's not hosted from my pc so my experience should be the same as the average player joining).

Never mind, its working now dunno how it suddenly fixed by itself. Maybe its the microsoft updates :D

Last night my mouse freezed for a few seconds then back to normal again, it was the destroyer map, but its properly just the lag.

Well, an update (finally) I have scrapped together some cash that could be set aside to use for a server.

I have been debating setting up a paypal account for donations for a server, but it would have to have a disclaimer (I don't want people to think that by donating they can dictate how the server is run... the money would be used as I saw fit to keep the server going, thus it would truly be a "donation" and not a bribe!).

Likewise, I'm also leary about using paypal after what I've read from some disgruntled customers (there's a class action suite pending from some customers who didn't like their security for example). Also I don't have a credit card (don't use them).

A free server would sure by nice, but that means I have to generate a lot of hits for my strategy page, and that means I have to update it a lot, and lately with my job I just haven't had the kind of time that demands for regular updates. So, the pay model is probably going to have to be used.

I haven't been running the DSL server due to needing the bandwidth for other things. Anyway, next weekend I'll probably be shopping around for a good server to run Siege again 24/7.

And RazorAce, if you're reading this, please, please, PLEASE release a linux server compatible OJP basic (withOUT the enhanced saber stuff)! I really need those auto-balanced teams and Siege exploit fixes (those are the top two complaints I got when my server was running before, and since I can't be there 24/7 to monitor those things I MUST have an automated way to handle them!).

Well, there's suppose to be a dude working on it but I haven't heard from him in a while. And my other man is down for the count with a fried harddrive.

As for me, I don't even HAVE Linux. I might be able to compile it on the school computers in a few weeks but for now I'm on vacation.

I'm sorry I can't get it out faster.

Kurgan
08-28-2004, 07:48 PM
Okay man, you do what you can.

I did my part, I plugged you on the main JK.net page in the news, and I've been posting encouragement on the forums.

I hope somebody can help! Even if they just port the existing Basic code you've got to linux and then disappear forever (well hopefully that doesn't happen) at least then we'd have something workable that every server host could benefit from!

You can download Linux for free (if you have the patience, it's like 2 cd's worth for RedHat off the 'net) legally, and if you're using Win98SE for example you can have multi-boot so use several operating systems and select the one you want at startup (to have say, XP or 2k, 98SE and Redhat Linux). Anyway...

Have a great vacation!

Wow, hard to believe it's been 6 whole months since my server was last up... but guess what?

Razorace's OJP Basic is apparently fixed and can be used again for hosting!

So this means I can bring back the server, once I pick a host that doesn't require a credit card (I'm kinda broke at the moment, but I should save up some money before too long for funding).

Could Meatgrinder be returning soon? I think I can confidently say the answer is yes. How soon? We'll see... ; )

It's back! Well, sorta.

It's not on a rented server (yet) so it won't be as fast or as big as you remember.

BUT, at least you'll have the opportunity to break some heads, Meatgrinder style. ; )

After 8 months, it's better than nothing right?

I mainly held off because I wanted to wait until OJP was stable enough to use as a public server replacement, and so far it's nearly there. Thanks to RazorAce for the beta I'm using!

So hopefully in a brief time (a few months at most??) I should scrape together some cash for a real rental server again, just like old times...

PS: If the server isn't working, query me for the IP. It's a pain to update when the IP keeps changing, but that's how it goes.

PPS: See my first post ALWAYS for the latest info. The server IP incidentally of this moment is:

Well I took the server down yesterday to do some other stuff online (the curse of not having a rented server yet).

The IP is still the same, but it won't be back online until later tonight probably.

Thanks again to everyone who joined, it's been lots of fun. Maybe RazorAce will release a new beta for us sometime, I think I've come to the end of testing this one up and down (in Siege mode anyway).

With greater stability and some more bugs worked out, I might be willing to give CTF a try again.

The droid head bug exploit that you fixed, is somehow "Broken" again in the beta you gave me to use. I just found that out the other night. Tested it and it consistently behaves as it did before you implemented your fix. : P

Think I talked with you about that on ICQ, you said you had an idea why that wasn't working... but I know at one time you had it fixed, I witnessed it first hand (in an earlier beta).

razorace
02-05-2005, 09:14 PM
oh, hehe, sorry about that.

Turns out that the siege item drop issues was the result of two seperate issues instead of one. The way the droid head initially drops is different than the way a siege item is dropped when the carrier player is killed.

So, I basically just had to fix the problem twice to get it to fully work. :)

Kurgan
02-10-2005, 03:32 AM
Cool, glad that's fixed. Now we have a weird problem with the bots... mixed up pings when they get auto kicked and after they initially get kicked, bots never actually spawn back into the game until the next Siege round...

Sometimes I take the server down for a few hours to download something or do other activity online (like play Republic Commando) since that would make everyone lag to death anyway.

Keep checking it in the course of the day, and you'll likely find it up at some time.

Btw, it's up now as of 12:40pm CST.

Kurgan
03-22-2005, 09:02 PM
Okay, the server is up somewhat sporadically now, as I've been also running a Republic Commando server.

It only took 1 month for the (only) JA patch to come out.

You're probably thinking of JK2, where the first patch took 3 months!!! (that was a year before JA came out of course). The second patch came out I forget, a month after that?

Anyway, SWBF had patches very quickly and lots of them, but the last one took awhile and we haven't heard any word since 1.2.

So there's really no telling how long a patch could take, however we've heard rumors and such and things they said in past interviews which imply we should see one in early April along with the tools. But they haven't said anything about it since the game went gold, so who knows.

Btw, new update on the server! RazorAce has agreed to let me admin his OJP server (the one he got from EscapedTurkey) and update the name. So we've joined forces!

Sadly it's kinda buggy right now. It's come a long way since OJP started supporting it, but it still isn't quite crash/bug proof even on the better maps for it. The trouble is that people tend to just run ahead and accomplish things by themselves rather than sticking together as a team should.

But, someday, someday.. ;)

shukrallah
10-01-2005, 05:42 PM
Nah, www.jk3files.com still exists. :D

Also, I've been playing on your server latley and the auto team thing keeps switching people... I got switched like 3 times in one game, its getting annoying. Is there any way to set it so it will only switch bots or people who went on the popular team?

It sucks having 3 flag captures to then get switched to the other team, get a flag for them, then get switched back to the original team.... because of that auto-team thing...

razorace
10-01-2005, 06:47 PM
It's supposed to be switching the bots before it switchess people.

It's probably switching you a lot because you're the "youngest" player on the server and there's no bots available for switching. My guess is that this is occurring when the score is tight (the system is trying to balance the teams based on score) and there's no bots. Next time it happens, grab a screenshot (or just write down) of the scoreboard and a serverstatus.

Anyway, on another note, OJP Basic 0.0.7b9 is now on the server. I'll upload the beta client component when I have time.

Update your favorites! I haven't had much time to play lately since school started this month (and on vacation I didn't have access to my PC), but there should be plenty of regulars there to keep you all busy. Enjoy! ;)

Also on Friday's, RazorAce has setup OJP Enhanced for testing on the server, so you may want to grab that from ojp.jediknight.net

I've also setup a Downloads page for good/commonly used mods:

Due to some problem (I don't know what) with Escaped Turkey's server, Meatgrinder is now (until further notice) hosted on Razor Ace's local server. Same rules, different IP.

Today (Saturday) was also designated as an "Enhanced Day" to give more people a chance to try this version of the mod. We'll be back to OJP Basic tomorrow...

Good catch, I wasn't on the server when this happened. What does "DSA" stand for anyway? Do we have a list of members or a website/forum for them?

We could send out spies if it gets too rough. ;)

Flooding the server? How immature. Good call...

Lathain Valtiel

They flooded us because me, Antilles there, and kron were ripping them apart in Holo FFA. It was comical really.

Kurgan
07-15-2006, 05:45 PM
So what were they doing exactly... chat flood, server vulnerability exploit or some kind of DoS attack (if the latter, we should report them to their ISP)?

Sad that people resort to something like that just because they are losing. You guys must have really torn them a new one! LOL

Lathain Valtiel
07-15-2006, 05:49 PM
They were basically connecting a flood of dummy names over and over.

Actually, they were trying to hold some clan meeting,a nd we ke;pt shooting them. We also kept shooting them every time they tried attacking us.

That's pretty sad. Kids think they own the place!

Most clans have their own servers for that sort of thing. Besides, if they just wanted to chat on our server, they could have done so. If they really didn't want to be shot at, they could have gone into spectator mode, and even used the private chat function built into JA to avoid anyone knowing their secret plans. ;)

Ah well... !

Lathain Valtiel
07-16-2006, 10:39 PM
Yeah, random name connection spam. I had to log off the server, ban the IPs the jerkoffs were using, and then restart the server.

Could you provide the flood protection code to OJP please? I for one would be interested in seeing it in the next Basic release to stop this from ever happening again.

ensiform
07-16-2006, 10:53 PM
well it would require a whole rewrite of the clientSession code but it can work.

but other than that, all it does is check ips of firstconnection clients with already connected ones. if that # is less than or equal to sv_maxConnections, then let them connect.

Okay, a lot has changed in the past 3 months! The server is now running OJP Enhanced 24/7.

I can understand this, as Razor is very close to finishing up the mod! This means different gameplay.

I'm going on vacation myself soon, and I'll be back Jan 4.

Perhaps I should look into getting us an additional server just for Basic,
if Enhanced becomes the norm (which I can see it being if it's as polished
as I'm lead to believe, but I've been away for awhile and a lot has changed).

I'll post here as soon as I find anything out.

I will need to update the info on Strategic Academy, as it is outdated (and I couldn't update it for awhile due to server access issues with JK.net). This week I'm studying for finals (it's been a long tough semester too, which is why I haven't been around as much as I used to).

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kurgan
02-19-2007, 08:41 PM
Due in part to some glitches in Enhanced making it not stay up on the server, and in part to renewed work being done on Basic, the server has been running Basic lately, so back to standard gameplay (at least for the moment, it all depends on what RazorAce decides to do next of course and we all know how busy he is).

Please enjoy! ;)

Obviously, the server is currently down and the tracker on the page shows it's been down for awhile. The server is down indefinitely until such time in the future (if any) when someone either DONATES a server to us or I get the spare cash to host one.

Probably what will happen is I'll just run a server off my computer or a friend's sometime and just advertise the IP while it's up.

So thanks to everyone who played with us over the years, it was great! Thanks to EscapedTurkey, RazorAce and everyone else who helped out. Thanks to folks like Amidala of ChopShop who ran servers with a similar ethos, and so forth.

Btw, I have a friend interested in checking this game out, so the server MAY be coming up soon. Probably it will only be up a few hours at a time, on a specific night (or nights) either this month, or next month. I have two summer classes starting Friday, so if it doesn't happen soon, it might have to wait until the end of May, or early June. And since I'm strapped for cash, it will be on a Cable connection, so no crazy 16 player matches with no lag (sorry).

We're almost finished with OJP Enhanced 1.3 (renamed to Jedi Knight Enhanced)
Maybe you could offer to host a beta server some time?

Kurgan
05-05-2009, 07:02 PM
Maybe, if I ever get a pay server! I'm not to keen on some of the gameplay in OJP Enhanced, but I realize it has changed a lot since I played it last. I'm still very supportive of your project, even if I don't personally play it myself.

But I think if I run the server (off my home computer) this Summer, it's just going to be running the latest version of basic and some official mods (Ie: asteroids, bonus pack, etc).

You might want to change the name again... because "Jedi Knight Enhanced" is the name of another project (hosted on JKhub.net) which uses high res models and textures for Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight.

Jedi Academy Enhanced?

I may do some testing tonight to make sure the server can work (or else someone else should host). I'm thinking sometime after 8pm CST tonight.

Anyway, let's plan on May 24th for the game (through the 28th; next opportunity June 2nd).

Sorry I'm late (it's 9:40pm here). I'm firing up the server now. If you're reading this, it's basejka 1.01 (OJP basic .12 should be compatible):

Well, predictably nobody showed, but everything seemed to work fine. I was able to play for hours with bots and on some random servers I joined (which had CRAPPY settings, I might add... dang, everyone has disabled Force powers... sabers only... fast force regen... admin mods like JA+... very annoying; and the few Siege servers were either empty or using passwords, but of course NOBODY had OJP basic, so no bots).

It seems I only have problems when I try to run Siege, but I'm working on that (pity I don't have any time until the 24th to mess with it more).

I would be more than willing to play with some people here on one of the empty servers... might as well give it some use, and I trust the people here not to abuse the exploits (that Basic fixes).

Sorry you couldn't find anyone to play with Kurgan. :( Better luck next time?

Yeah... I'm not even attempting it until I get a new power supply. I don't think mine is capable of handling the video/cpu I currently have in a game.

Well guys, I'm planning to get things geared up Saturday night and we should start running the server (or joining a server) Sunday.

My parents are coming to town so I may not be on all that time, but I figure I can do one of two things:

Put up the IP(s) of some servers for us to "meet at" to play (and if voting is enabled, we can team up to vote in the options WE want, rather than whatever stupid crap they might be using, though that may be wishful thinking on my part).

Or

Run a "dedicated server" off my home PC. Now bear in mind I haven't done this in a long time (I figured this time I'd just run the game locally and play in it with you folks), so the settings might not be perfect.

If something goes wrong with the server while I'm not there, I won't be able to restart it (obviously) until I get back home, so please be patient, and send me an email if you notice something is amiss.

Anyway, it won't be as good as the old days, but I imagine it will be nostalgic, and I'm looking forward to it!

If any wish to contact me, the easiest way is email. Perhaps we can get a Teamspeak or Ventrilo server up too, for voice communication? Just an idea. ;)

Keep in mind that this is not the only time I will be attempting to get a game of JA setup for us. After June 1st (and especially after June 15) I am anticipating having a lot more time.

PS: Skinwalker, go pickup your new power supply so you can play with us! ;)

I can't come I'm busy working this weekend. :(

Kurgan
05-24-2009, 03:34 AM
Bummer. Well my parents are in town so I'm guessing I'll have the server up as soon as I can (afternoon CST), but I may not be in to play for much of that time tomorrow.

I'm hoping to catch the last showing of Star Trek (traitor!!!!). ;)

But the rest of this week (except Friday night/Sat morning) I can play. Especially Wed-Thurs.

When I get the IP I'll post it here, so just keep checking it. If you pop in and nobody is around, don't give up, and just try and get my attention (drop an email even if it seems like it should be obvious).

I may not get the Ventrilo server setup in time, but I am thinking I'll run that for sure after June 1st. If somebody else has more experience with that and wants to set one up though, that'd be cool.

Kurgan
05-24-2009, 02:24 PM
Okay, the server isn't up right this moment, but when it comes up this afternoon, the IP will be:

(look for updates if it changes)

Okay, server has crashed, I'm going to bed!

Specifically, the map files you "need" (if the maps are on the cycle) are:

http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/mods/JKII_ffa_pack.zip

http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/mods/JABonusMaps.zip

(unzip, pk3 files into "base" folder)

Will return in about 8-10 hours! New IP will be posted (if different)

The bots were fun, though!

Kurgan
06-04-2009, 09:59 AM
Maybe I should reduce the number of bots. Nobody complained before (it's only you and Lath that do that). ;)

Okay, I'm firing up the server while I'm at work, same IP.

06-05-2009, 01:46 AM
Yeah sorry... I got tired, and nobody was on when I came home (looks like I indeed just missed you, as I took the server down sometime after 6). I'll be firing it up again before I leave for work in the morning (around 8:30am CST) until around 5:30pm. If I'm not too tired I'll keep it up that evening until I go to bed. Same with Saturday (though I have a shorter shift), and probably Sunday too.

What times are you willing to play, Skin? I hope you installed the two map packs... (bonus and JK2 FFA).

SkinWalker
06-05-2009, 01:56 AM
I think I have all the map packs. I might get some time tomorrow after work (I get off around the same time you do), but my wife volunteered me to look at her friend's computer. I have no idea what level of help it needs. :)

I might be able to get on this weekend. I work to 4pm Saturday and off on Sunday.

I've got Sat-Sun off as it turns out.

Here's what I'll do. I'll take the server down, and at that moment you'll try to connect, so I'll quickly bring it back up again! (so don't give up the first time) ;)

We'll play, and there will be blood!

Glitch, restarting...

Btw, here's a huge file with all the skins in it (with the crashy, single player extras stripped out, so get the originals for the "full" experience on your own please) (http://strategy.jediknight.net/jka/mods/StarWarsSkinCollectionJA.zip) that I'm using.

Special Note: The readmes are also left out in the interest in time and space. I'll be putting those in the zip and uploading it again soon, so please don't think I'm leaving out any credits... I also left in a disclaimer placeholder until then.

The file was revised, so I suggest if anyone got it previously, to get it again, and replace the old files with this one. A few skins were removed due to glitches as well.

I've decided that the server will probably not be up today, as I have work to do and need the system resources. See you next time!

208.43.15.76:29070 (Up in a few minutes)

(I'm tweaking the settings today, but the kinks should be worked out by this weekend, so have patience)

How long do you plan to keep the server up?

All summer. So unless I come into some extra money, it'll go down in August.

I hope people aren't waiting to just fight me personally, because I'm on vacation right now, so I'm not at home. I won't be back until late Sunday. But in the meantime the server is up on a rotation (Siege, FFA, CTF, repeat, Raven Bonus & vanilla JKA maps) and I have remote access via the web.

Okay the server tracker (Jedi Tracker) is down, however the server ITSELF should be unaffected (it's hosted by ET, a different company).

So just join the server as you normally would, you just won't see whow is in or what map is being played via the web page until the tracker is fixed. You can check the status with programs like Qtracker however.

Kurgan
08-12-2009, 09:18 PM
Server tracker is back up.

I start classes in less than two weeks, and then I'm basically out of time to play. I hadn't considered running the server past August, but we'll see if there's any interest and if I can spare the cash. It would be nice to have someplace to play a bit on the weekends with the little spare time I'd have. But this is my final semester of my degree, so we'll see...

Kurgan
08-17-2009, 02:05 AM
Just a heads up, but unless something extraordinary happens, the server is GOING DOWN the week of September 15th.

Not only do I need to save money, but I won't have much time to play then anyway. So enjoy it while it lasts! And while the server hasn't been as popular as I had hoped (I guess what can I expect for a six year old game, and using settings that are too HARDCORE for your average player, heh), but it's still been great!

So get in a few more frags, a few more caps, a few more objectives complete... while the getting's good!

SkinWalker
08-21-2009, 02:56 AM
I just played a few rounds tonight... believe it or not I have the darn thing running in Linux but it keeps crashing in Vista!

You have a lot of bots! I was creamed.. it was as if all the bots had it in for me and the game was "smear the human."

Still a bit of fun, though.

Kurgan
08-21-2009, 02:54 PM
I'm glad you had a good time! I threw in a lot of bots to keep it interesting, but I agree that a few of the smaller maps don't need 12 in that confined space. Though I wasn't remiss in terming those the "Mayhem" rounds... hoping to duplicate the experience of a Mosh Pit, but with weapons... ;)

I may be able to get on tonight, though this weekend is going to be pretty crazy at work, plus classes start Monday (however, since part of my schedule is in limbo, Mon-Tues may not be that busy).

If you're going to be on tonight again, let me know...

SkinWalker
08-21-2009, 08:31 PM
Yeah, I've got a graduate class starting Tuesday. I'm only taking one this semester, but I'm told its the hardest, most-involved, so that's probably a good thing. I'm not sure if I'll get on tonight, but I'll try to find some time one evening this week. I'm actually working both Saturday and Sunday this week -new software testing/validation at work.

I'm still surprised at the ease with which I was able to play in Linux. The Frame Rate was probably not as good as it would on a decent XP machine, but I've been on servers with a good machine where it was far choppier.

I need to upgrade my graphics card for Vista/XP use. I have an older nVidia and as soon as I enter a game like BF or JA, it freezes with the screen looking like a kaleidescope and I have to reboot. At first I thought it was my power supply, so I replaced it. Then I thought it was a poor install of XP, so I upgraded to Vista. I even formated the Win drive and installed there. Then I thought it could be a problem associated with not having the SATA driver loaded (Linux doesn't need all that garbage).

The only thing left is a bad mobo or bad video card.

I'm telling you, you know Ubuntu Linux has come a long way when it's easier to install and manage than Windows.

Kurgan
08-24-2009, 01:14 PM
Yeah, my parents use Ubuntu at home, though it's on a pc with a non-working sound card. They just use it for word processing and web browsing, basically.

I refused to "upgrade" to XP (mostly to save memory), but I may be "forced to" as there are a growing number of games that supposedly require it that I'm interested in. I also need to upgrade to a gig or two of ram... blah. Vista and "Windows 7" are right out... they require way too much processing power and memory to do the same crap as before, plus there are DRM issues (sorry, but I don't want to only use M$ approved software and reserve the right to upgrade/downgrade when I feel like it).

Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get on! I thought I had heard of Q3 working in linux, so even though there's no official port of JA, that isn't too shocking. I'm sorry we haven't gotten to play.

My class schedule currently is Tuesday through Friday and I'll be working Sundays (subject to change). Thankfully I have no morning classes, but it looks like I'll be writing over a hundred pages this semester. Good luck!

PS: The JA server is paid for through Sept 14th. On the 15th they'll charge me again automatically unless I cancel it. So I'm debating whether to continue it or not. I probably won't have time by then, but if people want to use it enough, maybe I could justify the added expense. Once I'm out of here though I'm going to really have to pinch pennies, so it probably won't be back for the foreseeable future.

SkinWalker
08-24-2009, 02:50 PM
I hear you.. even with one class my writing is likely to be many pages. Fun stuff though!

My wife actually seems to prefer Ubuntu over Windows ... I have both loaded and she's restarted to get to her Ubuntu desktop several times after I've left it in Vista!

Happy New Year! I forgot to update this thread in awhile, but anyway, I can't afford to pay for this server month to month anymore, so I'm really, really taking it down mid-February. I've officially canceled my subscription from EscapedTurkey.com (a great host, but I need to save some money).

So I'm not sure right now if the server will stay up until MARCH 15th, or if it'll go down this week (once the cancellation order is processed). So get your game in while you still can!

CURRENT STATUS: UP! @ 208.43.15.76:29070

As such we'll be throwing in some plugs to their service and putting some unobtrusive ads on the page out of respect, soon (much like we did for JediServers, our first sponsor, back in the day).

Kurgan
03-04-2010, 06:59 PM
A new thread is here (http://lucasforums.com/showthread.php?p=2710349).

Kurgan
04-11-2010, 05:38 PM
For anyone still reading this old thread, the server IS still running as we speak, despite the fact that the TRACKER (which merely shows the status of the server) is down. The tracker is undergoing maintanence, as the service blog states (always check that when in doubt).

The server is fine, and is on a steady rotation of six rounds of siege (each of the three maps repeated in two cycles) followed by a quick mayhem round and then all five CTF maps.

It seems the gametypes don't change properly unless I begin with a FFA map, so we'll continue to start the cycle with a mayhem round.

I have put in other alternate cycles that use Holocron FFA and some of the JK2 maps and the Bonus maps. I hope to get to use those again someday if people will finally download and install them!

Enjoy!
