For some reason, recently I have been in a bit of a funk...maybe it's school and work taking most of my free time and not really doing anything but those two; more likely is that Oct is the month my uncle died (6 yrs ago even, wow)...anywho, while I'm feeling down, I generally find really sad songs to get my emotions out (Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" was the standard for a long time).
I recently found one of the saddest songs I ever heard from a seemingly unlikely source. I bought Evanescence's Fallen and the song "My Immortal" just struck a chord with me. The music is slow and her voice is just sounds so ethereal to me it is beautiful.
I have not been able to get it out of my head for several DAYS now. I have the cd in my stereo system, the song ripped to my cpu, & downloaded to my MP3 player so that I can listen to it whenever I like (listening to it as I type, actually). I was wondering if anyone else has run across something similar? And if so, please share yours.

I have a few:

First and foremost would have to be David Bowie's "The Motel", from the Outside album, which not alot of people like, but it is still one of MY personal favorites.

"Northern Lad", and "Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos. "Sistinas" by Danzig (don't ask). Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". "The Thrill is Gone", by B.B. King. "Nobody Home" by Pink Floyd.

There are others, but those are my top picks.

George Harrisons "Isn't it a Pity".

I listened to that song and a few others off of the Fallen cd over and over again when I first got it too. Good stuff, it is. How about some of the songs fromthe Lotr/TTT soundtracks? Like Evenstar and such.

Desperado, Eagles - followed by Hotel California for cheering up.
Let it Be, Beatles - followed by Hey Jude for cheering up.
Long as I Can See the Light, CCR - followed by I Heard it Through the Grapevine for cheering up.
Look Away, Chicago - followed by I'm a Man for - you guessed it - cheering up. :)

I think you pick up on the pattern. There's always reasons to be blue, but there's always reasons to laugh and have fun also. You have to acknowledge equal amounts of both to lead a healthy life... IMHO. :)

other sad songs I have been listening to:

If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot

Seven Years - Norah Jones (the whole Come Away With Me album is very soothing)

Oh Very Young - Cat Stevens (probably one of very few uptempo sad songs)

Someday Never Comes - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Grace is Gone - Dave Matthews Band (not the Busted Stuff version, but another that is slower and is tremendously sadder)

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M. (greatest song ever to help you through rough times)

I'm also listening to a few of the others posted by everyone else...also, just know that I do listen to other, more upbeat songs to keep me on even-keel.

I highly recommend Opeth's latest album, Damnation. They're supposed to be a metal group, but with their latest album they're trying out a new style and I find it extremely melancholic, it's very quiet. I love it.

As a sidenote, Evanescence's Immortal was featured in Daredevil. It played at the funerals of Elektra's father. Very fitting!

Hmm...sad songs.

Danny Boy...has become a sad song for me, because it was played at the service of my grandfather's funeral. So now when I hear it (or sing it), it brings a tear to my eye.

Others? Hard to say. I don't often listen to sad songs if I can help it...but I do listen to Blues music a bit. I also find some of John Denver's stuff to be mournful, and it strikes a chord in the heart. The Moody Blues also have a good couple of tracks, like 'Melancholy Man' and 'Watching and Waiting'.

I guess there are plenty of sad songs out there if you take the time to find them. Seeing the other recommendations in this list makes me want to listen to some of them...
