View Full Version : Finished Tierra models for Miguel and Tomas

11-23-2003, 06:32 AM
After months of slaving away night after night with no sleep, the master himself Sal has produced these two works of art: completed 3D models of Miguel Huesos (dressed in yellow) and Tomas 'the Red' Encion (dressed in red).

Tomas has gone through a few changes since you last saw him. He has a smoother hat and a nice new mouth.

Sal is now going to take a break from modelling skeletons and work on animation and a room (the break room of the DOD, to be specific.)

These look brilliant - especially Tomas! I like the contours for the cheekbones. They're definitely on a par with the models in Grim Fandango, if not better!

Keep up the good work!

11-23-2003, 08:36 PM
Awesome. I have no idea how you do it, Sal, but you do it. You get it done with flying colors. Awesome, and the jaw makes it look twice as good or more.

Now I KNOW Number Two is gonna be good. And Death as well. But most of all, I can't wait for DeCazador. Make him look insane, Sal.

Awesome, again. Brilliant and professional looking.

11-24-2003, 12:44 AM
wow.... wow... I'm speechless. They are absolutely fantastic Sallim. You're amazing. (D is right. I didn't think it was possible, but the new jaw makes Tomas look even better.)

Thanks guys for supporting me.
I realise that animating will be hard ( not the face , more the whole body )
But...it will work out for sure!

I will have alot of more time to spend for Nighlight of the 2 weeks before the end of December.

This week is a busy week for me, that means , be patient =)

But I can say, I work on the DOD stuffroom rigth now, the first nightlight 3d place =)

Thanks to all of you, Holidos, Huz ( always nice to see you here posting ), Incredible_D ( just incredible friend =)

and 8 of 12 , for so many ...cant count that much ;)

Why I dont know DeCazador ?! Was it after part 7 ? =/

Forgot to mention a person who helping me with scale things right for the 3d Models ;) ( And give me good hints and ideas for different ways to realise the models! )
His name isMichael Skwierawski (http://www.maxthegame.de/forum/images/avatars/1058812948.jpg) ( my cosuin ) I know a bad picture ;)

For fun, here are 2 outtakes ;) ( very old, just 8 of 12 see them before (orginal size! ))

Behind the magic ;)

DeCazador is from Beneath Monkey Island. Or at least he will be, once part two comes lurching into the world.

11-30-2003, 07:22 AM
Valora DeCazador is a rather insane pirate who makes an appearance in Tierra de los Muertos, in parts 5 to 10. The DeCazador from Beneath Monkey Island is his brother, Armando. He will make an appearance in part 2. :)

11-30-2003, 07:27 AM
Ahh I see now.

Thats the reason why I wanted the scripts ;)

But thanks for the info!

Forgot all about him. Oops. I guess I'll kill myself now.

12-01-2003, 09:40 PM
Yeah.... I suppose the only other characters besides the ones we've listed would be Great Sage, Avegail, Irishman, Arab amd Pilot.

12-02-2003, 02:54 AM
Yeah, but the good thing about a 3D movie is that it gives me the oppurtunity to expand and add characters. I've got a few more up my sleeve. ;)

12-02-2003, 01:46 PM
Someone talkin about hard work todo?

12-02-2003, 08:58 PM
How could you have more? Theres only so much recorded. Er... well who knows?

12-11-2003, 08:04 PM
the modelling looks good. But is that your final texturing it seems a bit to CG, To clean. Try adding a dirt map to the face just make it a little more worn. The red suit guys face has very tight Check bones, Some dirt or cracks might go well with it. But if your going for the clean skull look of manny it's good. The suits really need to have a more fabric look to it, it sort of looks like you've just slapped a colour on it. Also the shoulders look a bit polygonal needs to be smoothed out abit. But it's good, good tribute to grim fandango. Keep up them good work

12-11-2003, 08:52 PM
Meh, I kinda like 'em just the way they are. (Cue annoying billy Joel Music) I don't mean to shoot down any opinions but unless they don't match the environment (In a much later stage) I think they look fine. Of course, I know nothing about animation but that's just my opinion on what I see.
Tribute to Grim Fandango ay? I suppose......

12-12-2003, 02:34 AM
Nice to meet you! Seems you have the power to support me ;)
Of course you´re right in every piont.

But first this is the way 8 od 12 want it most..sure some things I have to tell him, but its fine that way.

Texturing is not the best ..but what exactly ypu men be that ?

" The suits really need to have a more fabric look to it, it sort of looks like you've just slapped a colour on it" ?

Yea Red is a bit more polygonal. I dont no if it needs to be done.

For some reason things looks sometime better low poly then smooth out ( all smoothie and flowie ?=) Do you have a big Pc in the pocket which can render all the suff ?? ^_^ )

Thank you very much for your opnio...so maybe..you wanna help me out a bit?=)

My ICQ is

There is another thread you can take a look for more info.

I answer you later Holidos..now time to run for the train---------

12-13-2003, 01:06 AM
What program are you using, I'm only trained in Maya. If your using maya or Studio max (i think there similiar) Making a dirt map would be simply drawing or even getting a picture of dirt or just using a fractal or noise. Then you slap it on a node which you want say ambient colour thats a good one. Then turn the alpha gain, (amplitude also if it's a fractal) down a bit. Then you'll get this sort of smudgey dirt look like his face has been through a bit.

Did you UV texture it or just assign them and use the 3dprojection node to move the texture around? If you UV textured it then i think like tiny bumps and pores would look great especially for close ups, you know how bone has those tiny bumps.

But I think it looks good i dig that skeleton.

Good luck with the project.

12-13-2003, 05:56 AM
Its so difficult to understand what I write?

I know how to do that thanks..but I search for someone how can animate it

all is written down under
"Announcement; Infos and "Need help" !

Thans anyway

And holidos..
nothing to add ;)

12-14-2003, 12:54 AM
I am alright at animation my tutor said that was a strong point, how many minutes of animation is it? have you set-up a skeleton for it? I could do that. HOw are you planning to weight it? rigid or smooth?

12-14-2003, 06:17 AM
My big problem is the planning to weight. And the "Inverse Kinematik" of 3dsmax, I cant get rid of it. When I try to setup the ranges for (x, y , z ) the bones all screw up. Cant even copy the IK Systems witouth have many problems.

That the first-

The planning of weight I dont understand right ( now )
What about this
I give you a older version of "Red" and you can show me or setup it and i can take a look at it what you have done ;)

I dont have problems with the animating itself, but with setung it up on the models -_-

Thank you for replay madjacks.

12-15-2003, 10:15 PM
What areas are you having trouble with inverse kinematics? I used to use inverse on my arms but learnt that, that was a bad idea. Foward kinematics are the best for characters unless your picking up things e.t.c. With the foot kinematics what are your major problems, have you made an ik handle going from the hip to the ankle to the ball and then the toe of your characters foot yet? once you have that you have to group each ik handle accordingly.

www.highend3d.com or www.learning-aya.com are really good sites for tutorials I think leaning-maya even has some 3d max tutorials.

12-15-2003, 10:19 PM
email REd to me at madjacks@hotmail.com If it's under 1024kb. I'll try have a look at it mid january. But it has to be a Maya file i don't know how to use 3d studio max and haven't got it either

12-16-2003, 07:48 PM
forward kinematic is better for arms.
I maybe show you whrer all the problems are ;)

Thanks for support!

Wow. Amazing. Especially Tomas. Usually, an image of a person who you've only imagined before looks terrible but Encion is perfect. I don't believe this is all still going after those few images so long ago. Great work.

08-16-2004, 09:38 AM
Ehm Hi..but these are OLD, 1 year old images.

And it still going on, believe me , hehe.
Well I decied to release some new stuff, but really a neak peak, you guys will see

Hey Miguel looks cool too! ^_^

And its all 8´s creation, I just did the 3d job =)

08-16-2004, 09:55 AM
I have to admit I have no idea what this project is about, but it looks really nice. :)

08-16-2004, 10:08 AM
You dont know? Man its Tierra de los Muertos!
A radio show inpirated by Grim Fandango created by a great guy ( 8 of 12 )

Its a story about Miguel Hues, Red Encion and No.2 who try to reveal the secret of the land of the dead. ( to say it short )
A big 10 part adventure ;)

When the site is back you can surely download the whole mp3 files =)

Its a really great story and so funny! And last year after I showed some 3d stuff of grim art files I decided ( and asked 8 ) to start a Tierra 3d project =)

08-16-2004, 11:54 AM
No, I don't know. I don't know anything about Nightlight projects. The site never works when I try to visit it and after several times I just gave up.

08-16-2004, 08:37 PM
Nightlight will be back in all it's glory soon. I promise. Don't give up on it JUST yet. :)

Hell I think you will see some new stuff when......
8 give me a ok ^_^

08-24-2004, 07:18 AM
8, please give the okay. Year old images (In my last post I thought that they were newer) and corners of vague objects are just making me cranky. Do you really want that? For me to be cranky? Just think about that.....

08-24-2004, 09:26 AM
Yeah, I can see how that'd make you angry. FYI, the corner of the images wasn't my idea. :)

Trust me, there's something cool on the way. But I'm waiting for the Nightlight relaunch, which is imminent. Really imminent.

Keep the Nightlight faith. Better days are ahead.

08-24-2004, 10:25 AM
It will not be that cool gyus, sorry. Just did the sneak peak for stupid reason , sorry again.

But lets wait a bit longer for the other new stuff, like the relaunch in near future.

Sorry for my moment of insanity. I remain the same faithful follower I have been since I first heard There's a New Death in Town (that's right, I was here on the first week of Tierra's launch, so there Kimble :p ). Can't wait for all this new stuff. Literally.

P.S. Please don't hate me for being pompous and arrogant Kimble ;)

thats ok. ill try to work on my anger management too. :D  http://www.kirstenp.claranet.de/moviefaces/actor/s/asc_kigacop01.jpg

Btw I was using your arrogance as an excuse for a kindergarten cop line. No hard feelings :p

09-08-2004, 10:11 AM
Exuse me guys, but THIS here is old and we´ve got enough off- topics in here =)

So please use other threads and feel free to chat around there =)

Just because it could be that someone thinks ( like happend , not just once ;) 2 new 3d Models are done, and thats not true. And since GF Network shows the latest Forum post, it can be a bit confusing =)

I hope you guys understand this in a freindly way =)

Thanks, and let this thread die allready ^^

Yeah, that's a good point. Okay people, you heard the moderator! Move along, nothing to see here! :D
