Now that I have your attention...:)

Software/music piratcy was going on decades before Napster and the internet (i grew up on share-ware and "borrowed" games)

NOW NAPSTERS GONE...i cried...

and now everyone is shaking in fear over lawsuits and arrests...

But is it really that bad?
Last night, I was getting angery...
Snice I am a BIG fan of the Phantom of the Opera musical (nerd), I used to browse for rare Phantom tracks. Stuff that you can't find in stores and be broke if you bought these tracks...(and the Swedish verison! :D)

NOW I CAN'T GET THEM!

So, is file sharing evil?
Or is it the scrouge of the earth?

YOU DECIDE....

*couting MP3's..* 413 mp3s, and downloading 3 at the moment (rare ones, are kinda slow). I know i'm bad to the music industry, but i'm a cheap person. Heck, I don't even have an allowance..But i would have to buy every friggin song, i wouldn't listen so much. The music industry is now slowly moving into a "CD is DEAD" and now already on some sites you can download (legal) MP3, about one dollar 99 for one song. I think that could help the music industry

about the musical thing, don't worry..I just downloaded some soundtrack from the musical chicago, recently saw it

i'm not encouring anyone to do the same...

I only have like 12 mp3's  I don't see whats the big ****ing problem, I belive music is okay, but in my opinion, pirating games and movies are the worst and should be shunned :o
ummmm... okay, made my point.

I personally have downloaded music that has shaped who I am and I really don't think I would be alive today without file sharing....

It's music I could not get other wise.

I agree. People actually put a lot of work into those.I thought singers "singed because they love it". And like I said, they ewould still get money from concerts, prmos, etc.....

The last Piracy thread was closed down because of the discussion of warez, and it wouldn't suprise me if this one was shut down aswell :p

But i do download some songs if the CD they come from is just plain bad. When Kazaa and other file sharing programs are shut down, i still like the idea of the pay-per-song option, because most of the time it is cheaper than buying a full CD.

Yeah, I download music, you know why?

I don't want to buy a twenty buck CD for one or two songs I want. I can also get rare music.

I do buy CDs when the majority of the songs on it are enjoyable.

Allow me to clear up a few things:

1. File sharing is not illegal.
2. MP3s are not illegal.
3. Sharing MP3s on a Peer to Peer network is not illegal.
4. Sharing COPYRIGHTED material over a Peer to Peer network IS illegal.

The probably is that in most cases it's the copyrighted material that is distributed over a P2P network. And that issue is a whole different argument about economics, monoply, and other stupid money-god crap that is probably more appropriate for the Senate.

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't think that downloading tracks from Phantom of the Opera is illegal because the play is now public domain. I could be wrong. Don't hold me to that. The same thing, I believe, applies to classical music. Or even Indie bands. (Again, this is just what I've gathered... someone more current on copyright law.. correct me if I'm wrong.)

iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/). Won't get your rare music fix, but hey... $0.99 a song isn't too bad.

The music industry is doing fine now, the reason they're cracking down is because what might happen in say... 10 years if this goes unchecked. There might be not such thing as FYE and Sam Goody. The only way for artists to make money would be from rights from porfessional singers, the radio, and concerts.

"They" have found another way to get rid of piracy says my nieghbor that always downloads stuff. "They" now find the most recent wanted songs, movies and games and make thousands of fake copies of them so you can't find a real one. Pretty good thinkin'

I buy cds at discounted prices only. www.sound-and-spirit.com though they don't have many newer cds.....i got a cd priced at $20 for only $6. and sometimes they have free shipping deals.
still download music, but only to listen to every song to see if the cd is worth buying. if i like the artist, i usually buy as many cds as they have out.

I don't have much of a problem with file-sharing music, as long as the files aren't infected.

lol we don't want to know joe :D
I download music on Kazaa. Do I share? No. Do I download entire cds? No. Do i download games or apps? No. I download MP3s and most are singles and rare songs. And yes, they have started making fake songs so that people don't download as much. Took me 2 days to find a Blink 182-Feeling This MP3. Same for POD Will you and Sleeping Awake.
My two cents.
:)

ok...I dunno why this thread isn't shut yet, but here is my two cents. The only reason downloading music is justified, is when its a rare song you cant buy anywhere else. otherwise you are a jerkoff for taking that song. No money is no excuse. I used to download music, but I realized how stupid it is. Thats like slapping the artist in the face for spending so much time making the song. well, its wrong....but then, you people will just never learn, will you. How would you like it if they just stopped making music all together?

YOU WILL NEVER LEARN THO, WILL YOU.

selfish....selfish....selfish....
