Who would you say is a better shredder Yngwie Malmsteen or Michael Angelo Batio. Although I donít particularly enjoy most of their music, I respect both of these guys for their guitar skills and sweep picking and full out shredding. But for all you crazy guitarists, who would you rank as the better technician of guitar, Yngwie Malmsteen or Michael Angelo Batio (download the timetraveler solo at http://www.angelo.com/ if you donít know this guy and see what I mean about rapid sweep picks). One can argue technically if in terms of technique Zakk Wylde beats both of these guys since Zakk picks everything and these two hammer-on and pull off more. Donít say you hate yngwieís attitude and think he sucks at guitar. Judge him by his skills alone.
Donít pull anything about Hendrix and SRVaughn on me since those two are a completely different category of music and canít be compared on equal terms with 80ís shredders.
O and btw, the list on rollingstones magazine of the 100 best was the worst list IĒve ever seen. I mean Hendrix was the only person who was ranked correctly. That entire list was a crowd (non guitar people) pleasing list. Kirk Hammet is decent but I personally think he shouldnít be that high since his solos arenít really that impressive and most half decent guitarists can play all his junk. Dwayne Almond is good and arguably is #2. The guy from white stripes at # 17? Common? What are they thinking? I mean he might just be lazy and not play his hard stuff, but that list is based on released songs. Nirvana? Itís a good grunge band but their guitarist isnít near top 100. Randy Rhoads and Van Halen deserves better than at the around #80 and 90. Zakk wylde isnít even on that list. Andres Segovia and all those spanish classical guitarists surely can dominate at guitar.
Don't ever call anything of kirk hammets work junk!
Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) is incredibly skilled! :D
Euroboy from Turbonegro rocks too

I never meant kirk hammet is junk. I meant junk as selection of artist works not as a term to belittle him. Metlalica is one of the best bands in skill due to perfect rhythm. However, their own songs predicted their future (fade to black, i disappear). Their old stuff (all albulms up to the Black albulm) was much better than their new stuff. They have some of the best concerts and have the some of the best rhythm riffs and nice innovative solos (i'm just saying his solos don't require an extreme amount of technique 30-60 minutes a day for about 1 year could get someone with talent to play all of his solos up to speed). Metallica is better than Than zakk wyldeís black label society as a band and lars is a god at drums (probably the best drummer alive)But in terms of virtuosity at guitar, Kirk Hammet just isn't up there with the true virtuosos. I play plenty of Metallica but its no longer challenging like it was when I first started guitar.

Steve Morse is my favorite.
If you haven't heard his song "Tumeni Notes" from the album "High Tension Wires" give a listen. http://www.mp3change.com/songs.html?album=6301&artist=3877
Eric Johnson is also pretty amazing. The late ( :( ) Shawn Lane too.
Of those two you listed, I guess I would have to go with Yngwie, since I have one of his albums, but none from the other guy (who I heard once, and had amazing technique, but left me totally cold.)
If you like Yngwie, you'll probably like this guy, who I work with: http://www.joestump.com/

I like some of yngwie's songs. Well I like playing them alot more than listening to them since they are pretty much all harmonic minor. But ya eric johnson is great. Morse has great skills.
Too many people think they are good because they can play hendrix. but they don't realize that there is a different between playing the notes for hendrix and playing hendrix with good with full vibrato and all that crap to make your tone good

I forgot Allan Holdsworth.
By the way, if you want to see pics of my axes, go to this thread: http://lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=113039

I didn't realize he was dead ... that is sad! His stuff with Jonas Hellborg is really nice stuff - tons of technique, but lots of thought and feeling too.
I have the 'Personae' CD in residence on my iPod ...
As for others, Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, no one in the world is faster than Al DiMeola, then there's Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, and don't ever leave out Django ...

Yeah, I didn't know either, until I got Guitar Player this month. I was almost as bummed as when I heard about SRV and Danny Gatton.
I was just listening to his "Powers Of Ten" CD, which is totally amazing, considering he did almost EVERYTHING on that record.
Yeah, Nitro is another nut from over XWA's neck-of-the-woods.
His songs are funny too, and you should give a listen, if they are still hosted anywhere.

We should form a jam band and jam. ahah imagine a lucasforums band having some of the better guitarists these days. Seriously though, we probably as guitarists are better than 95% of the POPULAR NEW bands of today that use guitar. I take that back, more like 99%. I know there are probably tons of awesome young guitarists that no one knows about. Its mainly the new generation of rock just doesn't fit my style.

Yes.... as long as you ask no followup questions and for no further proof, I'm a totally kickarse shredder.

Marten Hagstrom, Fredrik Thordendal, and Ben Weinman are my favorites. I used to be a HUGE Dimebag fan though.

Even though he died before reaching his full potential, ya randy Rhodes is my favourite guitarist. I like the melodies he composes.
