Okay, I'm going to need some help with this skin job.......

Okay, I'm having trouble with skinning a shadowtrooper in the usual dark background, and skinning something as dark as a shadowtrooper is nearly impossible in the dark.

I've got a trial of Paint Shop Pro 8, but I don't know a thing about how to use it for skinning!

Is there any way to change the background without changing the the shade or color of him? And if possible, could anyone please link me to a basic "applying-your-skin-to-a-model" tutorial that only an idiot like me could understand?
