View Full Version : Pirates of the Caribbean

I saw this movie Christmas Day on DVD. It's pretty good.
Johnny Depp is excellent in it. Interesting heavy mascara (I guess that is pirate-like, although the other pirates didn't look that way :P) and odd manner of swaggering, but I guess that is a piratorial exaggeration. He is definitely a character. Orlando Bloom is a blacksmith crafting fine swords. Geoffrey Rush (Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth) is great as the mutineering first mate of the Black Pearl.
There are some neat special effects (Industrial Light and Magic - The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Scorpion King, etc.) when some of the pirates move in and out of the moonlight, changing from human to monsters and back...

So...I suppose this goes to the Swamp (http://www.lucasforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=162)?
Oh yes, PotC was a good flick, with great characterization.

Oh. Does that mean we cannot have serious discussions about movies in this forum? I am not tuned in to all the fine points of LucasForums

I dont care where this belongs, that was a VERY good movie.
Depp rocks as the ultimate expression of a pirate.
Dare I say I like this better than the last 2 Star Wars movies?

I got two copies of this DVD for xmas this year! (I only watched one... returned the other to WalMart).
I'm planning to watch it again this week... wonderful movie. Johnny Depp is the only actor that could make that much eye-liner a believable character trait. Well... Pamela Anderson could too, I suppose.
Great effect his character... the perpetual drunken swagger... off-key humor...
Still, I think this post will get better replies in the Swamp. It's more of a Swamp-type thread.

sorry, just had to point that out ;)
anyways, I thought it was a great movie. And when I was done watching it I realised how... Piratey it was. :p
But, ya, they did a great job on it
Aye, thanks for moving it. ;)
I do like the movie. Even though some parts seemed like a b-movie, it was still good over all.

I waited for the dvd despite several people recomending it, and good revues, just because it was a Disney movie :( Turns out it really is a pretty good movie, and I'm a jackass.

Well anyways, this is my favorite movie of all time, not counting any movie that's part of a trilogy. I absolutely love this movie and I personally think it's about as perfect as it can be.

Ya Johnny Depp was really good in it "Let this be known as the day you almost cought Captain Jack Sparrow" :p
and they announced a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in wich Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka, I think he's perfect for the part after seeing Pirates of the Carribean. They've also announced Pirates of the Carribean II.
Its not like i'm some sort of freaky Johnny Depp fanatic, I was just giving some news, savvy? ;)

ugh, typical disney move, they make something successful and suddenly it requires 42 sequels to it. I'll still see pirates 2 just because pirates is the best movie ever. But if they screw up as bad as I think they will, i'm gonna puke.
Though i am excited about the wonka remake.

They must've had to douse Depp in makeup to give him that dark skin. I mean hes normally as pale as a ghost! I wouldn't mind a second Pirates of the Carribbean. But it would've been cooler if they had ended it different.
For instance, If instead of Jack going back onto the ship, Will and Jack become the captain and first mate of the Black Pearl. But, O well.

I got the DVD too for Christmas. Haven't watched the extras. It was a great movie. I like all there lines and I'm all about the Orlando Bloom Pirate Luurve. Johnny's not bad either although he's not very masculine in it - but his lines were great.

I saw it in the cinema way back in August. Then I rented it on DVD. It's a pretty good movie too, especially considering it was inspired by a disneyland ride.

Curiously though, he is quick-witted and quick to take action...
I have Johnny Depp's autographed picture. He was good in Chocolat and From Hell, but I really didn't like Edward Scissorhands or Sleepy Hollow
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/entertainment/film/biographies/johnny_depp_biog.html
"Instead, just as he had based his[Johnny Depp's] Chocolat character on Shane MacGowan, so he conjured Sparrow from the crumbling but still caustic remains of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. "
Captain Jack Sparrow inspired by Keith Richards? :P

Is anyone else as worried about pirates 2 as much as me? I mean seriously, let's take a look at all the disney sequels. How crappy are they? REALLY crappy.

My husband watches this film virtually every day, he loves it. I have to say it deserves all the attention it's getting, it's a great adventure, and the special effects are awesome imo.
When we went to Euro Disney in the summer, we took the kids on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride without realising how scarey it would be for them. They came out nearly crying and screamed the whole ride, and I must say we felt extremely guilty afterwards, but what a great ride it is. :D

Yes if you are IG-64. Notice I said "less than 25 years old" but I was actually thinking 20 or less (just giving myself some room for error on 25 in my estimate)
I saw a recent picture of Johnny Depp in Biography magazine, and 41 or not, he does not look old at all. Naturally to a young person, 41 seems incredibly old. That view changes as you get older though...;)
talking about not looking you age, Christopher Lee (Saruman, Count Dooku) is 81 years old! Who would think that? i would have thought he was like 50-60

That’s probably my favourite movie of the summer. Its pretty funny since they really show the stereotypical view of pirates.

41 has never sounded like an old age to me, he still has half is life to go, but i still think he's too old to ge gawked at by fangirls, he is over the hill now

So we could say that he has toiled up the hill, now he can glide down the other side; life is easier for him
And somehow, I don't think all those fangirls you are talking about care what his age is; they don't have your prejudice ;) :D

That was SUPER awesome, standing all tall and majestic on the mast of what you assume will be a real ship. And it's jsut a little sinkin dinghy.
And then when he rides it into dock as it sinks. Brilliant
