It will also have a great physics engine and realistic environmental activity. There's supposed to be a 50 ft tall demon you gotta kill using the environment around you

edit: Theres also a review on it on the September PC Gamer issue.

The recommnded (not minimum) specs are:

System Requirements - Recommended by PC Gamer:
2GHz CPU
512 MB Ram
Radeon 9800
5-Channel Audio

Also...

Supported Graphics Cards:
Ge-Force 4 MX
Ge-Force 3
Ge-Force 4 Titanium
Ge-Force FX (and higher)
ATI 8500, 9000 (and higher)

It was mentioned that there is an Ultra High Graphics option in Doom 3 that requires a 512MB video card...yup you heard right, Doom 3's highest graphics option can't even run on today's top hardware!

In Todd Hollenshead's most recent .plan (was posted right after his Gold announcement one):

Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves.

Um, i dont think that number of disks are confirmed, if D3 was at least 4 GB, it would have at least 5 or 6 disks.

EDIT: YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN FOOLED!!! Take a closer look at discs number 11 and 12 or compare color in both pics, it was all photoshoped by the same guy which HL2 DVD casing i posted, trust me.

I know what you mean man. The article mentioned that it was too costly to release a DVD version with it or something... I figured using 1 DVD would be cheaper than 4 CDs.

legameboy

One DVD-ROM would be just a little bit more, if not less than three to six CD-ROMs.

One other fact about games not being DVD-ROMs is (suprisingly) there is a lot of people who don't even have DVD drives yet.

This is getting to be as bad as floppies back in the day. I remember about five or so years ago, I was installing "Reader Rabbit II" on my dad's archaic desktop. You know how many floppies "Reader Rabbit II" took? Seven.

Hopefully within the next couple of years we might upgrade to DVD-ROMs. :p

Buy something like a Radeon 9700 Pro or better. I have a 9700 Pro, and that'll support the best games for at least another year.

If you wanna play Doom 3, dont get a Radeon, instead get something like a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, since Doom 3 runs best on nvidia cards.

yeah, but i'd like to be able to play HL2 as well... so it has to be some form of ATI product...hmmm.

http://tech-report.com/etc/2003q3/valve/index.x?pg=2

I was thinking of either a 9600XT, a 9700 Pro or a 9800 Pro, but i think the 96 may be a bit too old, the 97 doesn't seem to be available anywhere in the uk and the 98 is too expensive. sigh.

Looks like a 96 will run HL2 ok, but i'm not sure about doom. Anyone know if there is any major difference between the 96,97 and 98s appart from speed? They are all DX9 as far as i know.
You can get a 96 for a third of the price of a 98, and we will all need to replace them with PCIxpress cards in a year or two anyway...
hmmm. all too tricky....
I may just get the snes version....

LOL!

If you want to play both D3 and HL2, get something like a Radeon X800 or GeForce 6800 Ultra. You'll be able to run both games at max settings. Unless you're not willing to pay $800 for it. :D

Dude its common sense

Ever heard of the word "news" or "internet"? And if you go to the nvidia or Doom 3 preview sites, you'll see it runs best on nvidia cards. Especially on the GeForce 6, but the FX is already good enough.

Robert Duffy said there was only a slight difference between ATI and Nvidia.

toms
07-22-2004, 08:21 AM
looks like the difference will be much bigger on HL than D3, and nvidia have basically admitted ATI have better cards, fixed the results of benchmarks and banned people from releasing benchmarks for games cos they show the problem the latest nvidia cards have... so ati it is.
Why does no-one sell 9700 pros, only 9600s and 9800s?

price vs performace shootout (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1552194,00.asp) for anyone who is also looking for cards... although it is a month or two old so the 9800s may have dropped in price...

But thats proberly during last year when nvidia launched the FX series. Right now, this time no one won, ATI's Radeon X800 and nvidia's 6800 Ultra both tied together cause they both run equally well on almost every game.

Gabrobot, if you look at the benchmarks with the 6800 and the X800, the 6800 wins out easily against the X800.

Although it is nice to know I'll get around 40 fps with my 9800 Pro at the best setting...

Yes (in 1600x1200), but that's because of hardware not because "ATI sucks in OpenGL".

Ever Since I heard "DooM III going Gold" I have upgraded my PC in all fields just to run DooM III "well"
-Graphic Card
-Processer
-Memory
Make all the lag history...

I've been waiting so long for Doom III, ID has always been the ones to come out and make the engine that will revelutionize the gaming world. Quake III engine brought us, Quake III (of course), Team Arena, Jedi Outcast, Star Trek: Elite Force, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Enemy Territory, and one that I didn't realize until somebody told me was Call of Duty. I heard the next Call of Duty exspansion Pack will be made by the creators of Wolfenstien, Also I heard In one scene your in a plane that drops the paratroops, you have to keep things together, soon after the back breaks off and you got to get a parashoot and jump out behind enemy lines (usual Wolfenstien thing)

Because of hardware?

You do know that the higher the resolution, the more it taxes the video card? I have an Ati card btw, so I'm not biased against Ati.

I meant things like the number of pipes...that's why the X800 Pro is so much worse than the 6800's and X800 XT due to it having four less pipes. Apparently Doom 3 literally uses different parts of cards then most other games use.

If you wanna play Doom 3, dont get a Radeon, instead get something like a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, since Doom 3 runs best on nvidia cards.
Im getting a new comp in the next month:
Limited Edition Over-Clocked 256mb 5700 nVidia Video card --- 3.2 Pentium 4 CPU --- 1 gig memory --- 240 gig HD --- Flat Screen --- I can't wait for it to come in about a month :DPic (http://img40.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Tie23/PICT0011.jpg)

That is because they are using the cheap OEM versions stright from nvidia to test the benchmarks, thats why it lost to the ATI cards. But if you run a video card that is from a different manufactuer like MSI, Ledtek, Alberton, Asus, Gainward.... etc it will run much better.

The Ledtek 6800 Ultra already owned the X800 XT and nvidia's OEM 6800 Ultra in Half Life 2. I read a benchmark on it. (Forgot link, but i think its tom'shardware) And i'm 100% sure it would be the same on the FX cards as well as the Radeon cards.

Maybe... but who can afford those. On realisticly priced hardware you have to pick ATI at the moment... Once the 6800 price drops it will be a different story.

It should be noted that all of the modern cards play the game very well, and benchmark scores should not be the be-all-end-all decision maker. Scores will probably improve somewhat with future driver releases, and other factors like dual slots or dual power connectors can weigh against some of the high end cards.
The benchmarking was conducted on-site, and the hardware vendors did not have access to the demo before hand, so we are confident that there is no egregious cheating going on, but it should be noted that some of the ATI cards did show a performance drop when colored mip levels were enabled, implying some fudging of the texture filtering. This has been a chronic issue for years, and almost all vendors have been guilty of it at one time or another. I hate the idea of drivers analyzing texture data and changing parameters, but it doesn't visibly impact the quality of the game unless you know exactly what to look for on a specific texture. On the other hand, the Nvidia drivers have been tuned for Doom's primary light/surface interaction fragment program, and innocuous code changes can "fall off the fast path" and cause significant performance impacts, especially on NV30 class cards.
A note on overclocking: it is very likely that overclocked configurations that "play everything else perfectly" will start to show problems on D3 due to new usage patterns. Everyone is of course free to do whatever they want with their own hardware, but don't complain to us...

Talking to John briefly about his overclocking comments made some things clear to us that many enthusiasts will need to be aware of. When he speaks of "new usage patterns" he is literally talking about transistors on some of new GPUs that are going to be used for the first time when you play DOOM 3 on your video card. So be aware that pushing your GPU MHz may get you different results in DOOM 3 than with other games.

For those of you that think you are not going to have the hardware that you need to play DOOM 3, the fact of the matter is that many of you will be just fine, although an upgrade may still be in your future. As of this afternoon we were playing DOOM 3 on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 box with a GeForce 4 MX440 video card and having a surprisingly good gaming experience. Even a subtle jump to an AMD 2500+ with a GeForce 3 video card that is two years old will deliver a solid gaming experience that will let you enjoy the game the way id Software designed it to be. That fact alone should let many of you know that you will not be left behind in experiencing DOOM 3.

All that considered, for those of you that are in the high end video card market, the GeForce 6800GT looks to very much be the sweet spot when it comes to playing DOOM 3 with all the eye candy turned on at high resolutions. Obviously the 6800 Ultra is even faster for those of you that need the best no matter the cost. If I had to make a list of high end video cards to purchase to play DOOM 3, the GeForce 6800Ultra and GeForce 6800GT would easily take the number 1 and number 2 spots with the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE rounding out the number 3 place. For those of you that have not yet pre-purchased your copy of DOOM 3 because you thought your system would not be up to par and are not planning a system upgrade, you can now rest easy. I can now say with confidence, if you are playing any of the newer 3D games that have come out this year, the odds are that your system will provide a great DOOM 3 gaming experience in terms of IQ and video performance.

HardOCP are doing a doom3 hardware guide next week, so i'm going to wait for that i think. I still think i might go for the 9700 pro if i can find it anywhere... otherwise it will have to be the 980pro i guess, if i can afford it...

That and the fact that you need a... I think a 480 watt power source...

Damn power companies... they make me bleed

The 9800 Pro isn't much more expensive, and it's a very nice card...it's probably worth the extra $20.
