... I hate you.
But I guess I have to go with Empire. Yoda attacking R2 was just totally awesome. Best. action sequence. ever.

then I'd have to go with RoTJ and AoTC.

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was just the most amazing movie I had ever seen. Hoth... Yoda... Leia and Han... Luke versus Darth Vader... wow... I... love... ESB... oh... yeah...

I would also have to agree that ESB is the best.

Well best edition, because it did what it was supposed to do.

I give props to ANH, but I was only 5 when I first saw that.

ESB added to the first in so many ways.

So I guess what I am saying is that ESB roxors my boxors

I had a hard time, but went with 'my favorite' as the basis rather than trying any objective 'best' criterion. It was a close call between AotC and TESB.

But while TESB might be objectively 'the best', I would argue that 'Star Wars' (known to n00bs as A New Hope ;) ) is the 'most important' Star Wars ... and one of the most important movies of all time.

dang hard question I loved all three of the old movies from a new hope to return of the Jedi, and EP2 even thou still missing the true SW feel was a decent movie, but I chose to go with ESB since i couldnt mark all three of the old movies

1. aotc
2. rotj

I chose TESB because imho it was the darkest one of them all, had the best music (Imperial March) , good plot twists ("Luke I am you father), character develoement (Han and Leia, "Luke I am your father), and I liked the lightsaber battle (Luke I am your father) in that one the best. Vader looking like he was trying to chop down trees with those heavy stance swings.

i'm surprised ANH is doing so badly... i'd surmise that maybe (like me) most people who love ANH also love ESB and so voted for that?
ANH has the best dialogue, and the trench run at the end is genius. ESB actually has a lot of silly pointless stuff (too much choking, hyperdrive jokes etc..) but also has the best atmosphere and feel. ROTJ would have beeen even better if they hadn't relegated Han to comedy support and stuck in all the cute ewoks. The end space battle and saber fight still rule though.

ESB. I like the total Darkness of it all. Bad guys win. Good guys get captured/incapacitated chewie kicks some ass and ofcourse: 'No, I am your father.'

Y'know, that's a common misconception, saying 'Luke' instead of 'No' in that line, but this is the way it is. Go watch the movie, see i'm right.

EDIT: First i would've voted for ANH, because it sets it up so good. but i've shifted to the dark side recently, so i voted for ESB's darkness. and i just don't like Ewoks. I'm gonna blast 'em to bits when Battlefront arrives...

4. Star Wars (I never saw a movie called 'A new hope' in theaters ;) )

Also, its hard to decide between the old ones and the new as its another decade with other technology. But still ESB gets an advantage over AOTC.

maybe i'm just wierd but out of the three originals i like RotJ the best, good fight scenes, chewie makes the tarzan call, han grabs leia's boob, the ewok gets a blaster, luke and liea ride speeder bikes, 3 awesome fights go on at once(space battle, luke vs darth vader and forest fight) and probably a bunch of other good things oh and " i don't know, fly casual!"

Doomie
07-21-2004, 05:07 PM
i don't know, fly casual!" That will never be as classic as THE classic line: 'No, I am your father!' And besides, the fact that it has ewoks is only a bad point to me. and i never noticed Han grabbing Leia's boob. Bet you just watch her boobs all the time huh?

"No, I am your father" might be a classic line, or a classic plot twist... but it isn't exactly classic dialogue.
For dialogue i much prefer the banter/antagonism between luke/leia/han in the first film.

I'd say all the films have strengths and flaws... ANH being the most consistent. ESB having the best strengths and not too many weaknesses.

ESB:
Pros: Darker Plot, big revelations, cool hoth battle, degobah and saber fight.
Cons: Falcon spends most of the time doing nothing in an asteroid field. Too many chokings and hyperdrive jokes.

ANH:
Pros: Classic opening, Good plot, started it all, great chemistry, amazing tension in the final battle.
Cons: None really. Slightly limited by budget in places.

ROTJ:
Pros: Saber fight at end, space battle, bike chase, most of jabba opening
Cons: Han becomes comedy relief, Ewoks, Useless troops on endor, horrible americanised sentimentality in the middle. "I'm with you!" "Me too!" "Count me in!" yuck.

AOTC:
Pros: 2nd half*
Cons: 1st half**

TPM:
Pros: Er... well i liked the jedi powers and the final saber battle the first time i watched it.
Cons: Pretty much everything else. Everything the second time i watched it.

*Yoda fight, christopher lee, anakin going off to kill, final clone battle, first jango fight
**No chemistry, horrible "love" story, naboo, fifth element rip off opening chase, cheesiness, bit with his mother not making sense, jango being an idiot not a cool bounty hunter

I always think that, if i had the patience, i could edit together a pretty good film out of the good bits of TPM and AOTC. But i'm lazy so i'm waiting for someone else to do it...

txa1265
07-22-2004, 11:17 AM
I like the way you did that, toms ... so I'm going to steal your idea and do it with my opinions ;)

Star Wars
Pro:
- The opening by itself was unlike anything we had ever seen.
- Great use of devices and topics from other areas in a new setting. (mythology, fighter planes, eastern traditions)
- Great ensemble, some decent fun.
- Han Solo as outside, mitigating influence.
Con:
- Slow pacing doesn't translate well to modern times.
- Mark Hammill's acting.
Bottom Line:One of the best and most important movies ever released.

Empire Strikes Back
Pro:
- If you weren't old enough to see it yourself in 1980, you have no idea of the impact of Vader's revelation.
- The entire cast grows and matures, good interactions, good flow throughout.
- Where Star Wars was a nice 'good triumphs over evil' package, ESB shows that winning a big battle isn't everything ... and shows the desparate life of the little guy on the run.
Con:
- Who really likes leaving a theater with so many loose ends you'll have to wait *years* to resolve?!?
- Vader is teh ch0k3 wh0r3 !!1!!1
- I always get hung up on the Hoth->Bespin time-line thing
Bottom Line:Any movie that comes across as dark and serious, yet good for the family, and features a muppet as a central, highly respected character ... that's doing something.

Return of the Jedi
Pro:
- Mega-intense saber battle, with awesome music.
Con:
- The ending felt like someone channel-flipping through a land battle, space battle, and saber battle.
- Speeder bikes - um, you're a Jedi, use that Force thingy!
- Han Solo as comic relief 'hey, it's me'
- Seem unclear on what a Jedi is all about.
Bottom Line:

Phantom Menace
Pro:
- Now *that* is a Jedi!
- Best saber battles.
- Force powers that matter.
Con:
- Midichlorians
- Jake Lloyd
- Pod Racing
- I want some of whatever Yoda was smoking.
Bottom Line: Remember the bad guys from the last trilogy? That's us now. Try to make an interesting, sympathetic story about the decline and fall of a corrupt & decrepit government. What was good was what happened *around* the plot.

Attack of the Clones
Pro:
- Hayden Christiansen captures the whining of Luke, with some of Han's cocky self-assuredness, but with an arrogance and self-importance that spells doom.
- Ewan McGregor is transcendant - he makes me say 'Sir Alec who?'
- Christopher Lee, Yoda, Ian Mcdermid, Sam Jackson, and on and on ... the galaxy in conflict is well reflected on the faces of these talented actors.
- What happens when two arrogant, prideful, yet immature and emotionally turmoiled people try to deal with their feelings - you get a powerful and very uncomfortable on-screen romance.
Con:
- Natalie Portman is one of the best actresses of her generation. So why did/does her opening scene make me cringe.
- The part of Han Solo is now filled by C3PO. That isn't too bad, and served to break things up somewhat.
Bottom Line:Gritty and harsh, full of angst, but uneven at times, this delivers on the promise of the earlier films.

Episode III
Pro:
- The cast returns, and looks more at ease and should be interacting better than ever.
Con:
- There's an awful lot to wrap up in just over two hours.
Bottom Line:I predict that this movie will be the most argued over ever, as it is impossible to live up to the expectations some have, and some are so jaded, convinced that Lucas has 'raped their childhood' that they couldn't enjoy it regardless.

SW:
Opening: This was indeed great.
Pacing... it is a sign of the times that a fairly fast paced movie like ANH is though of as slow these days. With modern movies, if you don't have 3 gunfights and 4 cgi explosions in the first ten minutes people think it is dull. sigh. I'd say the pacing was excellent.
Mark Hamill: I thought his acting was really good in all three films. Captured the transformation from whiny/cocky idealistic young kid through to hardened, resigned veteran really well. MUCH better than annoying hayden IMHO.

ROTJ:
Being a jedi: I thought the whole movie captured EXACTLY what being a jedi was all about, especially the ending. Unfortunately the new films have introduced all this absolute rubbish to the theory of what being a jedi is and turned them into some sort of Jet Li takeoffs. They were much better as noble Knights than kung-fu happy ambasadors.
3 Battle Ending: I'm not that keen on the endor battle, for the obvious reason of the ewoks pwning the troopers, silly tarzan sound effects and the general pacing of the whole battle.
However, i think the pacing of the space battle and death star duel is great. Also the switching back and forward between the three works MUCH better than the end of TPM because you can still follow the defined events in each one, and there are lulls in each and matching/contrasting changes of fortune. Unlike TPM where there is just one big saber fight, one big space battle etc... all happening in parallel.

TPM:
Being a jedi: While the initial showcasing of jedi powers impressed me the first time i watched it, it was old by the second time. They did a lot of stupid things that didn't make sense, and didn't seem to obey ANY of the rules from the original trilogy about killing and so on.
saber battle: This would have been really good (although not great, aminly down to ray park) if they hadn't (a) cut back and forth to other things i didn't care about (b) had DM not speak or do anything to make him interesting or scary and (c) had DM die in a really cheap way.

AOTC:
romance: you get a powerful and very uncomfortable on-screen romance. (that is one way of looking at it. the other is that it was TERRIBLY written.)
actors: Ewan was good. Hayden was mostly good, but came off as far too sulky in a couple of scenes, ruining a lot of the good work he did later. Both were pretty serious though... they need a irreverant "han solo type" character in there.

Overall plot: I'm conflicted on this. I love some of the details (palpatine outwitting everyone, clones being heros in these but villains in OT) but i also think that (a)the jedi council come off as idiots (b) the senate isn't at all sympathetic or great so you don't care if they fall (c) the fall of anakin could have been one of the most dramatic and emotionally impressive plots ever (think godfather) but so far he has just been a bit sulky. they wasted too much time with TPM and so have too much to pack into Ep3.

Originally posted by toms they wasted too much time with TPM and so have too much to pack into Ep3. [/B] There I agree ...

... and part of it is that I have a problem with the timeline forced between the prequels and the OT - Luke and Leia are 20-ish, which presses a lot into a short period.

I have imagined that instead of TPM, there was a 15 minute conversation on Dagobah (or Yavin) with Luke and the spirits of Yoda and Obi-Wan talking about the fall of the republic, the rise of the sith and the empire, and the fall of Anakin Skywalker. They would talk about the growing difficulty in using the force to help guide the republic, of growing trade and political inertia and dispute, and of a particular situation that exlpoded, and in which they met two people who ended up being key to everything that followed - Padme and Anakin. Obi-Wan would tell how he lost his master in that battle, and gained a very difficult but incredibly talented apprentice ... one maked with destiny. There would be snaps of Anakin's growth and development, showing things like from the Jedi Quest books, struggles to grow and fit in ... and lead to where Anakin is becoming an adult, and there is a burgeoning separatist effort.

That would take us right into Episode I: Attack of the Clones ;)

Or ... have the same discussion, but then say - that led into the period of the Clone Wars, but the story begins before that ... and go back to the fall of the republic, perhaps to the time of Qui-Gin and Dooku, maybe having a three-section movie detail the arc from Dooku to Qui-Gon to Obi-Wan ... or something.

TESB was awesome with the huge fleet and the sweet AT-AT army, etc., it rocked!!

I also liked the ENORMOUS Star Destroyer fleet at the end of RotJ!! It makes you wonder how a handfull of Rebels beat over two-hundred Imperial-class II Star Destroyers!!

And the Executor-class Star Destroyer...whoa!!

I just didn't like ANH very much!! TPM was sweet because of the awesome army against the Gungans and the sweet blockade, and takeover of Theed.
