View Full Version : What did they look like when they lived?

VampireNaomi

I'm sure we have all wondered what Manny and the rest looked like with skin, right? Well, why don't we talk about that for a change, and perhaps post pictures of actors and friends who we think resemble some characters?

I'll start with Nick. When I saw Julian McMahon in TV several days ago I couldn't help but think that he looked just like Nick. Take a look:

http://img47.exs.cx/img47/7820/piccyjul.jpg

However, a bit later my mom made me watch one of her favourite series. I don't really know what it was about, but the main character was a lawyer called Nick. He also looked like what I had imagined him to be like. See:

http://img47.exs.cx/img47/6343/piccysim.jpg

And you know what? The actor, Simon Baker, will be in a new movie called "Land of the Dead". Quite a coincidence, eh? ;)

So, after reading my little rant you can either say which actor you think is the best Nick, start talking about who looks like some other character, or tell me that I have no life if I find enough time to talk about something like this. Go on!

Sallim

WOW great idea..never thought about that.

Man if this is coincidence...it cant be just that.

I dont know who could look-a-like Manny or Salvador, for example ;) I will think about that. The only thing I imagine while talking about Sal with skin is his voice actor in grimE. It one nice possibility of how he could look like... same for Manny ;)

Shame on me I dont know the names ...I could look on the page...^^

Yeah...nice thread by the way ;)

Here's my choice for Chowchilla Charlie:

http://img41.exs.cx/img41/5497/cazalepiccy.jpg

He's John Cazale (R.I.P.), one of my all time favourite actors.

JofaGuht

No way dude. Chow Chilla Charlie is made to be Peter Lorre.

I don't know about actors, but my friend's Mom looks a lot like Lupe.

VampireNaomi
09-29-2004, 09:12 AM
*curious* Who is Peter Lorre? I better go and find pictures.

...

...

Ooh! It's Ugarte! :D Now I will remember that actor's name forever. You know, when I posted my previous post I knew someone would suggest Lorre. Ah, I just watched Casablanca again two days ago. And that reminds me...

Only Claude Rains could be Bogan:

This idea of searching for actors that might resemble one of the GF characters is very...well it takes a lot of time.
I got a beter idea, you all know about those Discovery shows when those guys find a skull they make a copy and starts adding skin n' hair n' stff, well think of a realistic image of any GF character and do what those guys do and...okay, I just realised how stupid my idea was so I'm just going to stop now.

El Virus

It is a special anthropology and forensic program, but it's not difficult to use (there is a computer version) but consider that some skulls (such as Manny's) don't have a human-like shape.
But who knows, it might work.

Well, Peter Lorre was in Casablanca as well. He was the guy who counterfeited passports early on in the film, much like Charlie. In fact, it's most likely he's the basis for the character. He had the bulgey eyes and he kind of looked like a chihuahua.

I Agree, they do look alike. He played the role of Ugarte, a shame he was captured early in the movie.
PS: He has also been on "The Maltese Falcon", another great film noir movie

Maybe somebody with some spare time could make some fan-art with the various characters in a life-like form. It wouldn't have to necessarily be realistic.

Once I've got some spare time from college (much more time demanding than I thought it would be this year) to get back to work on the GFN, I'll probably add a special section for this. If nobody else is interested, I'll make some myself. :)

Rei Nokato (an excellent fanfic author who I've been trying to lure to these forums) is drawing a picture of living Domino. She already sent me a list of his hair colour, body built etc. to make sure we had the same ideas.

I've been trying to draw living Olivia for a while now, but I haven't had much success. All I can draw is anime style, and that doesn't really suit GF characters.

If you noired up her make up a tad and got her to speak like Olivia. Stephanie Romanov (Lilah, Wolframm & Hart lawyer from Angel) might make a match.

No no, I won't show my Olivia pictures to anyone before I get pleasing results. ;)

And JofaGuht, I really like your choice for Olivia. I had my doubts at first, but now that I think about it... ;)

I was watching the Maltese Falcone again, and I realised that Sydney Greenstreet (Kasper Gutman, The Fatman; And also starred on Casablanca as Ferrari) is similar to Max, and his character on Casablanca looks like Hector.
Picture: http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/40/56/12m.jpg

Also there are some similarities between H.Bogart and Manny.
http://i.imdb.com/mptv1.gif

the croupier on Rick's Café looks like the one on Calavera café.

I always got the impression that Bogart was pretty short. He had to stand on bricks or something like that in Casablanca so that Ingrid Bergman wouldn't look taller (even though she was).

JofaGuht: Hey, she's excellent too. Now I can't decide which I like more. I mean, just look at this picture of Stephanie:

Funny, I was watching one of the cutscenes today and thought that if they cut the "extra part" of his skull, he would be really short.

The other day, I was watching "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", a very old show, on the Retro channel, when I noticed that on an episode, they found a city under the sea, that city is very similar to the border of the world, as well as the submarine, has anybody seen that episode?

La la la old thread revival!

Anyway, I remembered the other day that for a long time I've wanted to take pictures of grim fandango characters and sort of "trace" them, and modify it to be alive people, how I've sorta pictured them... So yes, here's a semi-traced picture of Meche, with a drawing of Manny that's re-done from a semi-traced picture. <-confusing.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/Kagaeris/MannyandMeche.jpg

Yeeep. I'll probably re-do it later... better... but for now here's my interpretation.

So anyone else have any other ideas on what people might look like?

elbiolin

I never thought on how would they look like in skin before.
Anyway, I couldn't resist it.
It Could be done better but here is mine:

http://i14.tinypic.com/454g100.jpg

Manny makes me think of Ben from Full Throttle even though I thought on a mix between Bogarth and Jorge Negrete (but without moustache)!!!
She's more like Sean Young in Blade Runner.

Whoa, the both of you absolutely rock as artists! My heart nearly stopped when I saw those. I think I prefer elbiolin's Manny (I love it how he looks so world weary) but Rubacava's Meche really has that unique look in her. Amazing work, both of you. :D

You should definitely post there at the DOD.

I erased some of the corners on Manny's face. I like it better now.

http://i16.tinypic.com/2lm0ug3.jpg

Thanks, Frenkieee! Those 9 on 10 made me blush.

I like Domino too, SeaTurtle. Thanks! I think he was the easiest character to do together with Sal.

And talking about Sal, here's Limones:

http://i17.tinypic.com/4gfd7qq.jpg

And here, Don Copal:

http://i11.tinypic.com/3y6skyr.jpg

I imagine him bold and with a wig. A short and pretentious guy that likes to yell to his employees to hide his weakness.

And finally Lola:

In this case she's a kind of Marlene Dietrich.

VampireNaomi

I always imagined that Salvador's jaw would be a little edgier, but he looks really good this way as well. Don Copal is perfect, as usual. Lola looked a little weird at first, but now that I've stared at her for a while, I'm growing to like her.

No. It's not Christmas. I'm wating for job to do so I need to grab a pencil from time to time. I'm just a little nervous.

VampireNaomi:"I think you can find some if not all cut scenes at YouTube."

I found that cutscenes are stiil up on Ninth-World at he WaybackMachine (Archive.Org)
It's kind of strange since much of the rest of the site - like the screenshots - are lost.

VampireNaomi:"Lola looked a little weird at first, ..."

They all looked weird at first. They are just a bunch of lines on skulls. No eyes, no nose, no lips, but at the same time they draw themselves.
I guess they did like this at first and then pulled out the skin and made the skulls.
Yuck!

VampireNaomi:"... but now that I've stared at her for a while, I'm growing to like her."

Oh, that's Lily Marlene's Charming.

Does anybody remember what poem says Manny on the Blue Casket?

And where can I get pics from Slisko, Alexi and Gunnar faces?

I always liked this scene:

Slisko: I liked it. It was sad and beautiful, like my mother.
Alexi: I despised it. It was too short and said nothing to me, like my father.
Gunnar: I had no feelings about it. It was aloof and licked itself too much, like my cat, Mr. Trotsky."

I'm sure nobody will agree, but, my perfect Salvador, is, and will always be, Lord Byron, particularly in this (http://shots.oxo.li/hot/OXO-World/George_Gordon_Byron.jpg) picture.

Not just the way Byron looks, but, also, their spirit, you know; the way they were, and everything.

VampireNaomi
04-21-2007, 02:40 AM
I'm not sure what poem you mean, elbiolin. Manny can say any kind of poem at the club, depending on the player's choices. Maybe you mean Olivia?

The pictures are again fabulous! I'm especially impressed by Velasco because just yesterday I was wondering what you'd do with him, you exceeded all my expectations. He really looks like a hardened seadog! The gatekeeper looks frightening, and I think you captures his idea very well. Same for Bowlsley!

Have you any ideas for Eva? I think she's the most important character you haven't done yet. Toto would be nice too.

As for the pictures about the beatniks, I'm sure I've seen good pics of their faces somewhere. It was a lineup of all beatniks, I think, but I can't find it anymore. I can only offer this, (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h256/VampireNaomi2/opic2.jpg) and it's not very good.

El Virus, I actually get some Salvador vibes from that picture. They both have a noble aura around them.

elbiolin
04-21-2007, 10:33 AM
Well, I can agree, El Virus.
There's a resemblance between Byron and Salvador.
Makes me think about why I exaggerate so much their traits. I guess it's good to explicit their personalities through their appearance on a first sight.

So Manny can say random poem lines but the same ones that Olivia says, right VampireNaomi?
Refresh my memory because I really can't remember. My confusion was because of that scene in wich Manny asks for an opinion to the anarchists about his poem.
Then HIS poem wouldn't be HIS but HERS, wouldn't it?

Also, there's a good line-up from the anarchists on the PC Gamer scans at DOD site.
The thing is - and that's why of my request - I can't tell one from another.
Who's Slisko, who's Gunnar and who's Alexi?

Anyway, Eva with a mirror at her back:

Achrono

That Eva one is unique.. good idea for it. Nice drawings!!! Especially liked Velasco and Chepito.... not to mention the Gatekeeper. And you got Bolsley exactly how he is in the game... a nervous wreck. Great job.

VampireNaomi
04-21-2007, 11:03 AM
Wow! I love that Eva! That's honestly one of your best ones, and the mirror in the background was a really clever idea.

When Manny reads poems in the Blue Casket, the player can choose the lines. They aren't from any of Olivia's poems, but if you keep asking her to read hers, she will eventually steal Manny's poem. When he complains about that, she just says it's an homage. You can see the entire thing here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrDqS7zSuo0)

I can't remember which of the beatniks is which, but someone who has a safe game around there could check it from the dialogue transcript. We could also wait for Shuz to show up and shed light on this. He's a fan of the beatniks, I think.

I thought she said it in terms of like ,when "they all had still their skin"
in the fat days...

Thanks for the info and link about the poems VampireNaomi.

About the beatniks I realized they are seven. The waiter, Slisko (the yellow one), Alexi (the pink), Gunnar (Blue), plus three women: green, pink and violet.
Now there're ten beatniks at the Blue Casket. The reason: Alexi is reapeted three more times there.

The original Beatniks:

And for Shuz the Beat Waiter:

Plus Maximino for Achronos:

And finally Toto Santos for VampireNaomi:

All those drawings are fantastic, creative and beautiful.
Though I don't agree with quite a few interpritations =). My personal favourite is Eva so far - as a matter of viewing the character, of course.

I love the look of those beatniks. When they're standing next to each other, the different shapes of their faces really stand out. Thanks for the Toto pic, too. Your design of him really reminds me of something, but I can't put my finger on it.

The angelitos have wings. Thats going to be a wierd and not accurate interpretation.

Anyway have you done the french waiter for the high rollers lounge?

elbiolin
04-24-2007, 04:38 PM
I agree with you Charie. Eva is my favourite illustration together with Chepito and Raoul.

Toto reminds me of Willem Dafoe, VampireNaomi - the actor who made the Goblin on Spiderman, for example.

Slisko sounds black to me, Shuz. But I'm not too sure about it anyway.
Those beatniks, I don't like them very much. I was pretty tired when I did them.
I like Maximino better. I was fresh in the morning.

I can't see why the angelitos should be a problem because of their wings and yes I did Raoul, the french waiter, Terracentral. Try page two of this thread and you could see it.

Those are wicked man!!! I can't get over how good you are at drawing. How do you, like visualize how they looked with skin so well?

VampireNaomi
04-25-2007, 02:42 AM
Toto reminds me of Willem Dafoe, VampireNaomi - the actor who made the Goblin on Spiderman, for example.

That's it! You're absolutely right! Another thing Toto reminded me of is a villain called Pretorius from The Mask cartoon. Anyone know that?

Anyway, I too can't see the angelitos being a problem. They didn't have wings when they were alive, so...

Welldone elbiolin those drawings are excellent, infact it's put me in the mood to start drawing again. I used to draw cartoons alot myself, your pictures are inspiring!

elbiolin
04-25-2007, 07:33 PM
Achrono: I guess they've done them with skin before turning them to skulls. That's it.

The game is full of sterotypes too. Like Maximino as Vito Corleone, or the french waiter like some kind of sissy, or the rest of characters taken from Casablanca.
It all helps.

I remember the bad guy from The Mask, VampireNomi. He shaped the mask related to his personality, taking more square edges than Jim Carrey's character.
It makes me think of some bad guys from the Marvel comics too.

Thanks b0abi Wan!
Me, inspiring? That's not bad. Look for Guadalupe Posada's work for inspiration if you have a broadband connection. That's better.

Absolutely excellent work elbiolin. You've done a great job of capturing the souls of the characters, not to mention the skin. Would you mind if I included these in the eventual museum-style Grim Fandango Network renovations? Most of the fan art is so old that seeking permission isn't really an option, but since you're alive and kicking I'd better be sure to get your courtesy! :)

I'm thinking on sending the finished Ad to Tim Schafer but I don't know if he would accept it.

Wondering what the text says?
Something as follows - in spanish, obviously:

"Kids! It's time for BIG FANDANGO

I like them all, but my favourites are the first and the last. The first one has a great colourful atmosphere and the last one looks like a real classic. The second one isn't bad either, and makes me think of lemons.

But above all, I like your idea of making up a similar game set in the Land of the Living and then making the ads as if you're marketing it to the dead. :D

I'd much rather have a skeleton than a game but that might just be me.

I actually like the first one the best. It seems more like how a cheesyish commercial would be toned. The green-toned one gives off a weird air...as if I'm not suppoused to know what is going on. The orange red looks very nice but gives off this very mellow tone which conflicts with the skeleton's expression. At the same time....he is a skeleton so it sort of works. The red-speia has a little more "power" behind it but the skeleton's suit is too bright and makes that the main focus. The brown sepia is nice but makes me think of old times and not advertisements which try to be colorful and attention-grabbing.

My two cents
