HELP!!!! monitor problems

I installed gb on my compaq laptop. however i hooked up to my desktop monitor (for bigger viewing area & better looking res.) and the menus dont stay stationery (ex: starcraft, aoe2) like they should. in order to view the menus i must pan down and then to the right or left. What is the deal? Is it something that will be fixed in the full version considering they locked out the resolution change option on the demo? and what is such a big deal about not letting the people change resolutions in the first place? Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

The demo is only 800*600 resolution.640*480 all menu.
I have a monitor of 17 inch and the graphics are very bad in 800*600.ALL GAMES NEDD 1024*768.
