i was just considering a running debate i have running with a friend, the song "Knockin' on Heavens Door" released to great success by Guns N Roses (it was their biggest hit in Britain) was orignally a Bob Dylan effort, my friend claims Dylan wrote the song, however i believe it to be much older, with Dylan being the first to actually produce it. any idea which of us is right?

It's originally by Bob Dylan.

I've checked the song credits, and it says "By bob Dylan". If it was by someone else, it would credit them. Either that or he totally stole it and no one sued him. But, I'd pick that he made the song.

Guns n Roses is pwnage. Nuff said.

I've never heard the Bob Dylan version, but I think the GNR version is fine by itself.

Who agrees?

Nah. Once you hear the Bob Dylan version, you can see its so much better.

The GnR version is great, but it CANNOT compare to the original Bob Dylan version.

Agreed. I don't really like ANY of GNR's covers as much as the originals (Sympathy for the Devil, Heaven's Door, Live and Let Die, Mama Kin, etc.....)

Bob Dylan's version is far superior. It has a dark feel to it, and alot heavier on emotion.

Eric Clapton took a stab at it too, and it was not too bad.

GN'R pretty much turned it into a power ballad. Fine if your into that sort of thing.

Yeah, Dylan wrote it. It was actually for some Cowboy movie he made a brief appearance in.

Personally, I love Dylan's version, but my favorite version has to be the Dead playing it live. It's oh so sweet.
