View Full Version : Best Console Ever?

I was listening to some midis of some of my old N64 games. Then I thought, "Man, that was the best system ever..." The games were unforgetable and amazing, even if they can't compete with today's standards. Actually, some of them can compete with todays standards: OoT is still being sold in video game stores, and classified as one of the best games ever made (if not THE best game ever made). Its amazing how a 30 MB game tops so many 3 GB games.

Now I buy games and I beat them in a couple of days, if not hours. Back then for me and my friends if you beat a game within a month that was fast, if you could ever beat them. Maybe I was just too young and sucked really bad, but whatever. Not to mention the re-playability, and incredible story lines.

Your favorite console?

my my, where have the memories gone...

N64, just because I actually had one and it holds such good memories.

I've played a few SNES games.... but uh... i never actually played a SNES, so I can't really say that.

shukrallah

Right, the N64 just so rulez. I wish they would make a CD that held a few of the old classics for the 'cube. They could probably fit a bunch of them on there. The N64 cartridges could only hold around 30 MBs, while I know the gamecube CDs can at least hold 600+ MBs, because Jedi Outcast is 669 MBs or so, and thats on GCN.

Mike Windu
01-30-2005, 05:01 PM
That wouldn't change it for me.

My best memories from my N64 and childhood itself came from the multiplayer, mainly Super Smash Brothers and Goldeneye.

Then everyone spread out to ps2 and xbox. We don't go over 1 person's house and have hours of fun anymore.

:( I miss the old days.

:D

I was playing that GCN game with Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time on it and all the memories came back:D

@ Luke: Was OoT really only 30 mb?

Well, thats the only reason I would ever get a console, because of the multiplayer. I got a GCN because of the 4 player MP and the great games. Only this time, I will only sell the crappy games and not the good ones. :) Every few years I like to replay the old classic games, but I can't because I sold the N64.

XBOX and PS2 have only 2 controller ports. The thing is they have ONLINE playability also, but that can't compete with playing your friends side-by-side in the same room.

BTW, you can buy a N64 at EB for $15 with games!

You're wrong. The Xbox has four as well. plus you can hook up Xbox's to each other and get a very large amount of people in the same room. Yoos looos. :xp:

And, holy hell, guys. The N64 was not a great console. Did you guys ever have SNES systems? Those were great consoles.

NINJA EDIT: Atari systems rocked too. :D

Super Smash Bros

Mario 64

Goldeneye

Go Go Nintendo 64! :D

And Rhett is right, xbox does have 4 controller ports.

But I still think it's great to get 4 people together to have some good old Smash fun.

SNES is without a doubt the best system ever made. The durability, the quality put into it, the insanity of how cool it is knows no bounds.

Super Mario Brothers World is the best game ever made.

GoldenEye, Zelda, and so many more.

N64 gets my vote. Then Sega. Then SNES because it's the first console I ever had.

Super Nintendo

Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat 2.

Well, I never had a SNES. When I played NES, N64 etc, these were the best games you could make. So, now that we have awesome graphics, going back and playing games I never played would be hard for me.... :( However, I can go back and play NES, N64, Genesis because I had these and played them very often.

I think you can get like 32 people linked together by hooking Xboxs to each other. Not really sure.

i think i have the most love for the snes, followed by the n64.

But if i was honest i'd have to say that the current generation of consoles are probably better.

snes had LOADS of greazt games, but it had hundreds of terrible side scroller clones as well. N64 had some absolute classics (Goldeneye & OoT among them) but also a number of poor ones, and a limited selection.

I'd have to say that the PS2 probably has one of the best selections of games that any console has ever had... (though i don't own one, only xbox and gc... both of which are great in their area, but not as varied).

Still, i'm happy to go back into rose tinted mode and remember the snes, genesis(mega drive) and n64... and thanks to roms you can play them on your handheld, pc or xbox... best of both worlds!

PS2 has a lot of selection but a majority of the games suck horribly. I own a PS2, sometimes I ask myself why....

I would never buy a PS2... only Gamecube or Xbox...

X-Box = A lot of cool games, awesome graphics.

GameCube = Awesome classics reborn... sometimes. Crap, Mario 128 and Star Fox Assault are both direct sequals to the old 64 games. They have to be good, because the old ones were.... otherwise they will lose fans. Then we have Zelda GCN... man... is that going to rock or what? Then theres Soul Calibur 2 (best fighting game ever) with LINK! Link pwns.

While the system may not have as much power as X-Box, or *supported* online playability, the games are much cooler in my opinion. (Cube does have online playablity with an adapter, but I don't think any games support it, or at least not that many)

Can't wait for the Revolution! :D

Yeh, but Gamecube has a lot more Gamecube only games that are actually worth buying.

" You would never have asked that if you'd ever played a huge multiplayer game. Go to your room. "

Yeh, but what game would you play? Most of the two person MP maps are made for like...... 2-4 people ,I'd be pretty crowded with 32 :p

I agree with Bill that the GameCube has the xbox beat in graphics, they just don't tend to show it off as much as the xbox.

What? It can't beat the Xbox in graphics unless you're talking about something like cel shading. Then it whips ass.

Well, I think IGN is a little.... ummm.. biased(?) about consoles? I get the impression that they make the cube out to be less than the other systems.

For example, some reviews kinda don't match right. The main one I can think of is Spiderman 2 - They said it didn't have reflective windows, and all this other stuff. When I played the game, it DID have all that stuff. *shrugs* looked like they copied and pasted it from the PS2 section...

What? I can't beat the Xbox in graphics unless you're talking about something like cel shading. Then it whips ass.

Depends on the game. I know the system specs are less than X-Box. I think that the 'cube has some kinda CPU managment though, because there are games on the 'cube that my PC couldn't handle, when my specs are double there (but my vid card sux, so...)

Soul Calibur 2 had good graphics, and was comparable to X-Box. Im sure there are several other games like that.

Wind Waker's graphics were good... the cel shading was awesome. It was just disappointing after seeing Zelda Space World 2000. At least we are getting that.. kinda later on. See my new Sig :D

the only reason you say that is they dont 'push' the GCN farther than it can go. they do things like Halo2 and the console cant keep up, you get stutters, and the bump maps flipping on and off, Halo2 look good in spots, and damn shoddy in others they way i see it.

Nintendo is trying to be unique. Even the Revolution will have crappy specs... some rumors are 256 ram... what the...? others say around 512 RAM and 2.0 Ghz. That will be good when its released in 2006, but in 2007 2.0 ghz will be nothing. Republic Command recommends 2.0 Ghz.

They focus on Gameplay and quality, instead of just supier hardware. This way Nintendo Consoles are always cheaper. The next console (the Revolution) is supposed to revolutionize gameplay. I can't wait to see what they have planned. Check IGN.com for info on some rumors.... but they are just rumors, probably made up ones.

I'm just gonna say that the art direction on Nintendo games tends to be better and more creative than on Xbox games.

So Zelda had cel-shading? So what? I mean people whine there's nothing innovative, or different out there, then, when someone tries something new, it's condemmed as too kiddy, or too different, or too wierd. Some people don't, some people like it, but if you look on message boards, 90% of them are that hippocritical (fifty bucks someone's gonna make fun of that word). The way, I believe, they were trying to do it was this:
Wind Waker: Link's a kid, so it's cartoonish, the tone is light like what a kid link's age would play.

New Zelda: Link's a teenager, he's growing up, the tone's darker, the graphics are realistic, Link's grown up, he can ride horses (metaphor, you might believe, for getting a drivers liscence).

Star Fox adventures wasn't good because, let's admit it, they tried to force the Star Fox lisence on it. I remember looking forward to it a lot when it was just simply Dinosaur Planet. But it still makes a decent rental

Pikmin is just addictive and fun.

I don't know anyone who can seriously declare Metroid Prime kiddy

Eternal Darkness is creepy, and not just an RE/Silent Hill clone. It borrows a lot from those, I'll admit, but the sanity meter is awesome, and they take a page from Metal Gear Solid.

MGS: TTS, is an awesome game for anyone who didn't play the original.

Sunshine is a good game, not as good as 64 was when it came out, but it's good too.

Super Monkey ball is just fun as hell

Mario Kart Double Dash!! is, IMO a worthy sequel.

If you want to know, I'm not biased, I just don't like one thing: everyone's trying to make Game Consoles into 'Multimedia centers' and Nintendo is the only one making a console for games, pure and simple, which also keeps the price down.

and Sam steals the win from under Rhett's nose in overtime!!!!

Gamecube COULD HAVE BEEN a great console, but amazingly bigN made almost the same mistakes with it that they made with the n64.

The very few games that have fully exploited the GC have had graphics on a par with the xbox... but because nintendo has been so stubborn about things like pricing and online play it is always an afterthought... so you always end up with an Xbox version, then a cut down version for ps2, then a port of the PS2 version to the gc (if you are lucky).

I love my GC, and i like my xbox, and i don't have a PS2. But i still think that the depth of titles (especially rpgs and things like disgea) on the PS2 is probably the best of any console ever.

Sure there is a load of dross, but there is ALWAYS a load of dross on all consoles (including things like SNES) but we have a tendancy to only remember the good ones and forget the rest.

Another thing games and movies share, we only remember the good stuff. They made as many bad games on the Atari, NES, SNES, PS1, N64 than they do now, but now it's happening, we see the previews, reviews, the ads, we hear about them, so we remember them. I mean the N64 spawned the unholy Superman game.

I agree that Nintendo has made a lot of mistakes concerning how it handles its business, but in the games it makes, usually you can't go wrong.
