He isn't somebody like Tolkien, no fantasy author. Karl May has written stories about Arabia, America, South-America and Africa.

Are they fictional stories that are just set in more of a modern setting? Or....somethign else?

He wrote them as travel novells, you should think he was there and lived what he tells but they are fictional.
