Im thinking of picking up an FPS game but I don't know which is best. Im not really looking into UT2K4 because its way too fast paced. Any recommendations?

But it is very simple and fun. It can get hectic if there are more than 4 other people on one map though....

From what I have heard Counter Strike is to hard to get into now as the people who play it are too damn good.

Well, I never really liked Counter-Strike when it was a mod for HL1, mostly because of all the little terd burgalars who played it.

But now for HL2, it is much more fun, and a little tweaked. So I'd recomend HL2.

And if you want a more strategic one, go for Battlefield: Veitnam

Tis a good one.

Counter-Strike : Source. With the new bots you can practice, and the graphics are great.

I'm loving Battlefront and HL2DM right now. Far from the best, though.

MOH:AA ruled my life with an iron fist for nearly a year, so I'll go with that. There's still hundreds (thousands?) of people playing it online.

Call of Duty is the best one I know.
$20 at Gamestop, nice SP, awesome MP
Its fast pace, but not to fast. Just have a computer that can give a smooth f.p.s. or you will lose, a lot.

I think it is one of the most played MP games out there.
And if you can, avoid the GOTY edition, mine had problems, I had to download the patch for it.

Battlefield 1942's great. It has a good community. At any given time there are thousands online playing. And there's the free total conversion Desert Combat mod that makes all the vehicles and weapons modern. There's also a mod for that mod called DCX (Desert Combat Extended).

When you start up steam it'll download the updates, the bots are in the update, so I guess you have to download them serperately.

What's cool about these bots is that when you load up a custom map, it spends about 5-10 minutes to configure the paths for the AI, so while there are a few small problems the bots don't suffer from Jedi Outcast Syndrome.

Well, I've never played Return to Castle Wolfenstein's MP, but I heartily recommend Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory if you don't have it already. It was originally going to be a MP expansion for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but they decided to make it a free stand-alone game instead. You can download it for free off the internet.

Enemy Territory is an objective based Axis v. Allies style game, where one team (usually the Allies) plays offense while the other (usually Axis) plays defense. The objectives usually revolve around the Allies trying to either blow up some military equipment or steal some important documents, while the Axis try their hardest to ensure that doesn't happen. Each side has several different player classes to choose from, with each class being able to perform certain functions that others cannot. For example, a medic is the only class who can heal himself and others, while an engineer is the only class that can build and repair machinery and detonate enemy structures with dynamite.

I highly recommend Enemy Territory. Download it if you haven't already.

I'll try downloading Wolfenstein later. IIRC isn't Half-Life single player only? So far right now I can't decide between HL, BF, or COD.

I say Battlefield1942 if you like running out on an open battlefield or sniping from afar or piloting a plane etc. Or Battlefield Vietnam which is more strategic because of the Vietnamese's guirella warfrare, but if you don't want to spend any money then go with Americas Army. Just because its free doesn't mean its not good.

Or you could just buy Battlefield Vietnam and download the WWII mod for it.

And if you're thinking of downloading the RtCW MP demo, don't. It only has one map, which is the beach. Go and buy the game :D

For something slower-paced than UT, you might want the Jedi Knight series or Call of Duty. I hear the Battlefield series and Star Wars: Battlefront are also good.
If you don't mind other genres, you can try full-scale MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies or the upcoming (I think) Matrix Online.

I didnt play with the guys(cause their asses also) there I just joined a random server on Source. I was killed by my team for not buying my stuff fast enough, 3 rounds in a row. Now I havent played since before patch 1.03 or something so I was a bit rusty. But come on, thats ridiculous. So I try a different server and aparently it was a "clan" match, yet it didnt say so anywhere, and they didnt have tags on over half their names. They killed me as the round started (I'm starting to see a trend here  ) and then the admin kept harrasing me when the team decided to let me live. So much for CS.

I would almost argue that Halo 2 could be one of the better FPS games thats multiplayer oriented. Only if they released about 20+ more maps. But I am sure people would argue differently. Many of those d***head CS players at the LAN center call Halo "easy" because theres no recoil. Yet they never play it to put their money where their mouth is.

You picked some crappy servers, I've only had two bad experiences and that was when some guy kept on teamkilling the team, and some guy was swearing at people through the mic. But the guy who was swearing was hilarious, and it was great seeing him get banned.

Also, Halo 2 is easy. :xp:

Enemy Territory gets my Stamp of Approval™

I wouldn't recommend America's Army to anyone. Seriously.
Anything that makes you sit through hours of propaganda just to unlock some maps is ridiculous.
And I don't approve of the army using gaming as a media for recruiting.

Enemy Territory is the best free game you can get. It has also plenty of maps released for it.

I'd stay away from the original Counter-Strike...people...aren't very nice there...

BF1942 offers a good gaming experience. From experience, there is a lot more idiots here then in Wolf:ET but not enough to kill your fun.

BF:Vietnam offers an average gaming experience. The problem is the lack of polish of the game, poor netcode and bad unbalances.

Battlefront is cool, but on the road to its grave. If you're seriously into MP gaming, I wouldn't recommend it now. The investment might not be worth it.

MOH:AA is pretty much dead now. I wouldn't recommend that either. I've tried playing a few weeks ago just to see only veterans remain. Obviously, I got my ass handed to me.

Call of Duty is still well and alive. It seems like this one is going to still live for a long time.

Tribes Vengeance is also good though you might find it too similar to UT2k4.

ah..time to get all defensive because someone is dissing my army.

i hope your kids get drafted and sent to north korea and make you proud and regretful for not enlisting. ;) eh disregard that, i'm just anti-anti-war/army people.

sure the game is used as a tool for recruiting, and DAMN, after being at basic, i see how this could actually be a HELP to those that are in the Delayed Entry Program. but it's not like it's shoving 'UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU!!!!11' down your throat. It's probably as close to the army as you can get without actually doing anything physical.

ok now time for phreakshow to come and say something retarded like 'rogue you dont know everyhitng about teh armay!'

btw i just got done playing 2 hours of the game. it's alot like counterstrike, but without all these annoying 1337 people storming around.

I'm not dissing the army, I'm dissing the "game" they made. Might as well shove in some sublimal messages.
It's not being anti-war, it's trying to keep gaming from being nothing more then a tool for publicity and propaganda.

It does shove down your throat a lot of publicity when you want to play a game. If you want to have the full gaming experience of America's Army, you HAVE to complete all of the "training", a lot that don't have anything to do with the game itself, more like showing the merits of being in the army.

Look at other games made for training in the army like Full Spectrum Warrior. It doesn't shove nothing down your throat, no explicit and annoying publicity. IMO, it does a better job at "recruiting" people.

Don't get me wrong, I downloaded expecting a fair amount of publicity for the army. What I got is more then I could swallow, especially all of the virtual classes and tests you had to take...they could have done it better by actually making the classes relevent to the game(like marksmanship or even paradrop classes were ncier).

well, at least it helps out those that are in the delayed entry program. :D i got bored of the stupid medical class so i just went back and qualified as sharpshooter then went off to war. He said not for consoles? Well if it can be a console I can't help you there way too many choices. I think Battlefield2 is gonna be good and Modern Combat the one that is for PS2 and XBox.
