Before you ask, I don't have a link to it, because what I heard and what I found are different, so untill I find out which one is true, no link.

Now, the mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman, is the subject of much controversy. The reason? He's going to take candid pictures of a fully dressed playboy model at a party. And apparently, if you're a Mayor, you must be freakin jesus and have no social life to boot, because this is apparently not allowed. Neither is endorsing a brand of gin. Come on now, he's mayor, not the pope. In my oppinion, rock out dude. He's down to earth and real. He doesn't say something, and then change it or take it back just because someone else doesn't like him. Which is why I will vote for him as soon as I can.

He also sparked some controversy by telling a group of 4th graders that if he were stuck on a deserted island he would bring gin. And that one of his hobbies is drinking. And parents that drink a six pack a day at home are saying this is inapropriate for their children.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a load of crap?

I think there could be worse hobbies than drinking, like spousal abuse. So, screw the parents, let the guy party.

Until he gets drunk in public and waves his penis around infront of kids or something, I don't see a problem.

2 thoughts:

A.) He's Mayor of Las Vegas... if there's one politician on Earth who should be entitled to get away with just about anything without the morality thought police coming down hard on him... he's the guy!

B.) Marion Barry.

He's supposed to be a role model therefore he should chose his words wisely to 4th graders. He might take Gin to an island - but maybe he could think of another answer for the children. IMHO

Yes, but that's the exact reason I like the guy. He just tells it like it is. And after he says it he won't go back on what he says.

I'd prefer someone that holds no punches to someone that only says what they are told people want him to say.

I just think it's a stupid thing to get worked up over. So he likes to talk about gin, so do I, so does Jed. Then again I'm more of a vodka man, but whatever.

Yes, I find it stupid on the point that being a politician doesn't mean you're a robot.

But I also think you should still keep some responsibility.

Where is Jed anyways? >_>

I don't care how much he drinks in private or how much he likes Playboy models, those are his private affairs, but anybody who advertises alcoholic drinks to children of that age should get his ass kicked by some janitor...

When was he advertising? he didn't say that the kids should drink was he? just that he drunk himself.

I personaly think it is a good thing when people in polotics tell the truth, it so rarely happens though...

One might say your psychology skills are a bit lacking.

Can't argue with that. But STTCT is still right. He could have given a different answer and still tell the truth, more or less. The value of "absolute truth" is too often overrated.

OH NO3Z!1!1! THE KIDS HEARD THAT THE MAYOR DRINKS GIN! NOW THEY'RE GONNA GO GET PISS DRUNK!

Come on now, these kids hear and see worse at home and on tv and on movies and in music. Alos, it's LAS VEGAS. Most 10 year olds swear like sailors here when no-ones around. And who's more influential. THe mayor saying he likes Gin? Or a musical artist saying he likes booze. Which one will be considered 'cooler' and make them want to do it more.

I've been to Las Vegas... you walk into a casino, people hand you booze for free. You can walk outside, down the strip, from casino to casino with a drink in your hand, an open container, and nobody says squat. And at every street corner someone is there to hand you pornography and advertisements for strip clubs, brothels, escorts, and prostitutes.

Please don't pull the "Think of the children" crap. If these parents were really thinking about thier children's moral upbringing, I doubt very much they'd be raising them in Vegas. These kids see more debauchery on the bus ride to school than they ever will from the mayor talking about booze.

Don't want your kids to hear about people drinking? Get out of Vegas and move to Salt Lake City.

...Marion Barry... now c'mon now... how you gonna tell little kids to not get high when the mayor's on crack?

'Don't get high, you won't be nuthin!'

'I can be Mayor!'

It's been about a year since I went to Vegas, and most of it was very much like seen in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. So I remember only one thing, and that was entering the city.

Speaking of which, I had gone to Wikipedia, and checked one of the articles. Within 15 minutes, and I'm not quite sure how, I ended up reading a Wiki about Oral sex(with drawn pictures of gay men and women too.)

Yeah.

It's actually rather nice to look up information(although the articles are written by the community, so take them with good caution)

Am I one of the only ones who have been to Vegas. Um besides the strip (where there aren't any homes)....the children are probably not subject to the boozing out in Vegas. Its like any normal place IMHO

Save the Children crap - Yes. He's Mayor. Not a fricken bum on the street

Eh. All my comments so far have been meant to be silly and humorous, since this is a ridiculous conversation to be having in the first place.

However, Vegas is like no other town, and it has it's own set of rules. If this was the mayor of Peoria Ill. we were talking about, this would likely be a different conversation.

Vegas was founded by the mafia for the purpose of making as much money as possible by catering to every vice they could imagine... doing things legally there that were totally illegal anywhere else in America. The town wouldn't exist without gambling, sex and booze. And without those trades there would be nobody living there. The entire community exists to support those industries. Kill the casinos and Vegas will be a ghost town in less than 5 years. Kill gambling and prostitution and it will be empty in under a year. There is no other native industry large enough that could support the population that lives there now. The whole local economy is based on the foundations of vice.
Even the people who live there who don't directly work in the casinos can only survive by supporting those that do.

If you live in Vegas you support the gaming and sex industries... directly or indirectly.

To pretend that Vegas is just like any other town in America seems more like wishful thinking. If you bring your kids up in Vegas they ARE going to exposed to the seedier sides of life far sooner than most kids are, like it or not... and shy of keeping them locked in their rooms until they are 25 there's going to almost nothing that you can do about it.

Chastising the mayor for a stupid off-hand remark he might have made about drinking, or hanging out with Playboy models isn't going to change that situation. Be realistic: if you are bringing your kids up in Vegas then they are going to have to learn early to accept sex and alcohol use as a fact of life. Trying to shelter them in that environment is going to be a waste of energy. Use the opportunity to teach them about the potential dangers of alcohol, and start them early on a thorough sex-education, instead of getting all shocked about it.

If they fire the mayor and get someone else in there it really changes nothing about the town. Kids are still going to learn about booze and sex at some point, and parents are going to have to be prepared to explain those things to thier kids.

Seems to me that the younger you start with them, the better prepared for the realities of the world they'll be.

And taking pictures of a fully dressed play boy? What the ****?! First undress them, then take pictures of them! Do I need to tell politicians everything (the playboy in question was a playboy girl, right)?!

And you just proved my point. How is drinking a weird habit, when millions do. It's because he's mayor. Thank you for proving my point that apparently the mayor can't have a life, and is completely freakin perfect.

And a bum on the streets? So everyone that drinks should be a bum on the street?

And I agree with edlib. Saying vegas is like any other city is foolish. No matter what, whether you like it or not, your children will learn about sex and booze. They just learn about it sooner in vegas. I can attest to this.
