Rap died with Tupac. All that's left is a giant marketting device being used by multinational corporations.

I hardly think the discussion of rap could ever count for a senate-worthy discussion.

So far, rap has done nothing to drop my intelligence, nor the intelligence of other listeners I know of.

Top 10% of our class, the valedictorian... and yes, our class is fairly intelligent.

I'll never get arguments like this. In my book, if it entertains you, it's good enough. If any band of any genre has a song that entertains me, be it Good Charlotte or Led Zeppelin, i'll listen to it.

I don't care if that makes me ignorant or what-not, it's just the way I think.

Rap was and is never clever musicaly, and very few rap "songs" (if you can call them that) have intelegent lyrics. so the two things that could make it good are missing.

I was speaking to some 50 cent fans the other day, the only reason they could give as to why 50 cent was good was:
Coz he is well fit innit.
Again not something that makes music good.

All rap is is someone talking over a really s*** beat and poor baseline. I'm glad it is dead, I just wish someone would bury it.[/rant]

^ What 50 cent comercial?

You guys are a bunch a' playa hatas! Rap is an art and its not going to die anytime soon. I like a little rap mixed in with my rock but I'm not a turn hat sidways, hang pants down to tighs, huge shirt and spend all my money on jewelry to look "cool" fan. 50 Cent has some good beats, even though I don't really like what he is singing about :xp:. Snop Dogg and his "Drop it like its hot" was a hit... I thought it was stupid but everyone was singing it... Anyway i'm in the middle on this one.

while that was your intention, it didn't happen sith. You did start a thread based on your opinion of rap. Yes, quite a few agree with you, but this isn't a fact. I listen to an occasional rap song thats good, when it doesnt have bitch, hoe, bust a cap and all that crap. I was sheltered from real culture at the time of tupac but i've listened to him. Yes he contributed to what is the rap community, and yes it isn't the same without his music there. But believe it or not, there are still decent rappers out there.(though few)

Erm, how many songs ARE clever musically or lyrically? How many rock songs have clever lyrics? 1 in 100? How many pop or country songs have clever lyrics? 1 in 1000?

I'm not a huge fan of rap myself, but i don't see it being any worse in these respects than other genres. MOst rap has become commercialised dance/r&b these days anyway, so it needs just the same catchy samples and baselines to make a 50 cent song popular on the dance floor as a beyonce one.

Yes but atleast it is clever musically which is more than can be said for rap.

And yes pop is just as bad.

Ive always wondered if there are any african american posters on these boards... there are alot of cornpoke rap hatin folk though :p It is really silly to disrespect something you know only a feeble amount about... If anyone thinks rap is just about 50c and Nell than I would agree with you that is sucks terribly...

However, hip hop, in its inception was a means of social expression for elements of the black community in New York in the late 70s. Mixed into this was some soul and disco, providing driving beats and rhythms.

The only hip hop I dare listen to these days are the mainstays from the old days. Not the original "old school" but old school compared to todays tripe... artists like Public Enemy and KRS-One are the progenitors of rap as social commentary. These artists are still strong today....

www.templeofhiphop.org can give you an insight hip hop as social commentary, and as a voice to declare and redress the difficulties faced by all peoples of any race or religion...

The Beastie Boys are pretty damn cool, and definitely rock a concert like not many others can :) I went and saw them earlier this year and they were awesome...

still I think this is a strange public service announcement to make sithy :p
