Boy do I love making next-gen console threads.

And I figure it's appropriate now, since E3 is coming up, and that I have some thing in form of pictures and news to contribute.

Before everyone pisses their pants in excitement, no pictures of the PS3 yet, but something cool.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/14/news_6124579.html

Apparently (sp?), there are these on bus-stops through out LA.

Notice the somehwat cut off button designs, and Welcome chang3

Basically implying to welcome the PS3.

I'll be honest, I'll end up getting all three

XBOX 360: Rareware, Fable, possible B.C.

PS3: MGS3, KH, some others

Revolution: Possibly innovative, Mario + co.

I bought the PS2 right when it came out.......then a year later bought the XBox when the price dropped. I'll probably be doing the same thing this year if the PS3 has that internal hardrive i've been hearing about that Xbox has ommitted from their system.

Considering the graphical power will be similiar to the Xbox 360 I think with a G70 varient and what capabilities that may come along, I might go for a PS3. Xbox 360 doesn't have much interest to and some of the titles will be PC games for me, but not much on the line up, only a few games so far. I'm more excited to hear what Sony has to offer to the table. :)

So you come along here just to say you're getting an Xbox and add nothing to say about the PS3? I prefer a company to take their time on the console. :) Also, ATi is a canadian company aswell as some of the internal parts that are foriegn.. ;) Lastly, last time I checked, Final Fantasy was mostly Playstation..

Anyway, I'm curious about the PS3's capabilities. Is backwards compatibility for sure or what?

For me, it depends entirely on the types of games that will be available on these consoles. I mean, I'd only really be interested in 3rd person (not 'platformer' style) games, RPGs, and possibly first person games where the emphasis is not so much run-and-gun (I prefer mouse/keyb for FPS).

At the moment the only titles on X360 that interest me are...

Condemned (slower-paced, exploration + melee + some shooting)

Gears Of War (3rd person fragger on UE3 by Epic. If I don't upgrade my PC by then, the Xbox360 version might be an option)

The Darkness (just going by the trailer, but I'd need to see actual in-game gameplay as it's supposed to be first person)

I'd need to see at least 10 titles that really interest me before I'd consider getting that console.

I have no idea what's in the works for the PS3 at the moment - hopefully there will be news coming out of E3 in that regard.

At the moment I'm more seriously contemplating getting a bog-standard Xbox now the price has come down and there's a greater choice of game titles I might actually want to play. :p

Word from "an annonymous games developer source who has access to both dev kits" is that the PS3 blows the Xbox 360 out of the water as far as power goes.

But then the xbox is coming out so far in advance of the others that its almost certain they will be more powerful. Several people have made dreamcast comparisons, though i don't think MS will let that happen.

None of the XBOX games announced yet look very original, just graphically boosted sequels. And i have had a serious lack of Japanese Tactical RPGs since Nintendo stopped getting any of them. grrr...

A "leaked" thing of pictures and specs for the PS3.

If you ask me, I think it's one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. Plus, no DVD compatibility would be a big mistake on Sony's part.

Someone posted a link of a Blu-ray recorder that looks exactly like this:
http://www.ps2nfo.com/news/Blue-Ray_Recorder.jpg

Which looks huge.

Also, the controller looks like s***. Like a heart with 2 handles coming out of it.

So, let me be the first on Lucas Forums that this is FAKE.

:)

EDIT: I'm really not feeling well, and staying home from school, and I had a dream that the PS3 looked exactly like a PSP. A handheld, and that I was the only one in the world that didn't like it. Everyone else called it "brilliant". o_0

Engadget is going so slow, probably because of the fact that everyone is checking out the site because of the Ps3 coverage.

Anyways, link:
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000050043558/

Backwards compatibility was confirmed. Though, how far, I don't know. I hope it's backwards compatible also to PS1 games, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

The site is completely blocked, but is it black brick with one round edge and a UMD slot?

-Edit: Holy Crap! I agree with Acrylic, but that looks like some cheap ass DVD player! (Maybe it is?)

Disclaimer, disclaimer, yadda yadda. We’re kind of hoping these pics aren’t legit because frankly, we’re not feelin’ the love for the design. But we digress! The specs that accompany these shots are saying the Sony PS3 will have wireless controllers, a 160GB hard disk, 1 CELL processor running at 4GHz (pumping out 256 GFLOPS worth of power — getting close to 1.21 gigawatts, here, folks), ethernet port, USB 2.0, memory stick duo support, and will read Blu-ray disks only. Backward compatibility for the older systems won’t be via the drive mechanism, then, but will be achieved via emulation in the CELL processor itself, providing retro compatibility with both PS1 and PS2. Controllers will be very similar to the PS2 controllers, plus add wireless. All of the above will be seen in the first line, to be released in Japan in March 2006, with a second version to follow in late 2006 that will be sporting a 400GB hard drive. The rev2 will also apparently be able to record TV shows on Blu-ray disks (like we said: disclaim, disclaim…). More nitty gritty specs via the read link, and another pic after the jump. Pfft, and how much will it be? Hmm?

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/16/news_6124681.html

For those too lazy to click, I'll sum things up.

-The official name is the Playstation 3.

-It's coming out in 2006.

-It will be backwards compatible to the original Playstation.

-It will use Blu-ray discs.

-"It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz."

-It will come with a 2.5 in detachable HDD.

-Out of the box, it will have capabilities to support 7 bluetooth controllers. Why not an even number like 6, or 8, I don't know.

-6 USB slots. 4 in the front, 2 in the back.

- Of course, it will have the cell, which runs at 3.2 ghz, and will give out 2.18 teraflops of performance. (Isn't that like, double what the Xbox 360 can do?)

-It will also have multimedia features.

That's about all, from that link.

Can't wait for pictures!

BIG EDIT: "Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today."

SWEET! o_0

EDIT : Notice it didn't say 1080i. That's 1080p. Now, if people don't know, those HD's go for a lot, I'm sure, as I haven't seen any in any Best Buy ads...

I hope its all real, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up. a 160gb harddrive AND a blue ray burner? And I'm not liking the design much either...
Cha-ching!

My guesses:
CPU: $400
GPU: $500 - $1000?
HD: $200
Blu-Ray Drive: $200?
Blu-Ray Drive (If burner instead): $500?
Case and Everything Else: $100?
Controller: $50?
Brand Spankin new MGS: $70?

Total (GPU $750 and No burner): $1770

Sell Price: $1000-$1250?

So, now all of those boys around the world won't be able to play Jak 4 cause their parents nearly had a heart attack when asked if they could get a $1000 PS3. Pfft, my mom hardly let me, my bro and sister get the Xbox when it was $200.

Edit: I'm not 100% sure, but I remember seeing somewhere that the PS2 has the youngest users, then the GC, and Xbox has the oldest. So PS3 will not do as well because of the possible high price (Way less kids) and the whole thing of good Japanese 2d strategy games will not be acepted in the new generation when Chaos Theory graphics are minimum.

Yah, lookin great, for 20+ yearold gamers who don't mind eating nothing but Ramen for a month.

TiE, seriously, quit being so ignorant. They didn't unveil the price yet, and you're making stupid assumptions. I know Sony is going to try and compete with Microsoft, and they can't do that by releasing a $1000 console.

It won't be the cheapest console, that's for sure. But hell, I wouldn't mind spending an extra $50 or so for a PS3, if that's the case. Its specs are wayyyy better than the Xbox360's. So, I'm sure it'll cost more at initial release, but not THAT much.

EDIT: http://img.engadget.com/common/images/8389731317563729.JPG

Look, if I was judging the original PS2 by its looks and specs when I was deciding which next gen console to get first, it would have been the last one I would have gotten. But I loved the games on it.

Actually, it think looks do have a major effect. A lot of playstation (and ps2) appeal was built on their stylish design. ANd i'm pretty sure the "kiddy purple" look of the GCN hurt its sales in the US where they like things more manly (like the xbox).

But in the end its usually down to a random combination of factors like timing, games catalogue, extra features and star games. Its pretty impossible to predict.

Looks like the PS3 will be majorly more powerful than the xbox360, but arrive later. I think the question of whether the xbox360 becomes the next dreamcast or the next ps2 will depend on how many games it can get out there before the other two launch.

--------

Consoles are never expensive!
The actual costs of components don't affect the sales price, as the seller will take a loss if necessary to keep it down. MS was taking huge losses for every xbox sold.

Plus, this is sony were talking about, they'll get most of their components for 1/10th the price you would pay in the shops.

The ONLY time when they might release it significantly more expensive than the competition is if they are including significantly more features... such as a big hard drive to allow it to work as a tivo. Doesn't look like they are though.

An SD slot?????
I'd have bought sony products years ago if they didn't insist on those stupid memory sticks! though why they decide to include one on a console and not their PSPs or mp3 players is beyond me...

I can't believe I was so quick to judge the PS3. I think it looks beautiful. So sleek, so sexy, so curvy. I guess I just had to see a "live" shot of it.

The black PS3 is the best looking IMO.

PS3 design > Xbox360 design.

Is it just me, or does the black PS3 remind other people of the PSP just a tad? :D

Edit: I got my mind made up. When I get the PS3, I'm definately getting the black one. Maybe the white one, if it's uber sexy like the black one is. choices, choices...

The PS3 showing was pretty cool, but nothing really new if you have been keeping up with the ps3 info on gamespot and stuff. They showed the cell processor at work in real time by displaying a tub full of water on the screen with rubber duckies in it, and the duckies rocked back and forth in the water, then the simulation or whatever added more duckies and they overflowed and toppled out of the tub.
they also showed a bunch of clips from ps3 games like killzone 2, which i was impressed with, and afterwards, we went into an area that had the ps3 on display in a glass case rotating around. there was also a small sign that said it was just a prototype design, and that it might change.

Sony has launched itself into the number one spot and they won't be budging any time soon. They will continue to dominate the gaming industry for a very long time. However, I do not believe that they will dominate the next generation as much as most people believe they will. I have many reasons why I think so, and no it's got nothing to do with the fact that I support Nintendo over Sony and Microsoft.

The PlayStation 3 is powerful, very powerful. It's like a Dark Lord of the Sith among the others. The graphical power of the PS3 was shown off by many demos at E3. But none of them were actually running on the actual PS3 itself. They were just demos of what this console is said to be able to do. I don't doubt that the PS3 will be powerful, we all know for a fact that they will have the most powerful hardware of the next generation. However, the new technology they're using for their console is going to be extremely expensive and extremely difficult to develop for. The Cell technology is new, and still very experimental (IMO), it hasn't been used in this manner yet and Sony is making sure that their new powerhouse is as reliable as possible.

Developing games for the PS3 will be extremely difficult and will cost a lot to make games that will live up to the consoles high technical stats. Developers such as EA, Square-Enix and LucasArts will be able to make some great games for the PS3 due to their high development cost limit... or rather the lack of a limit. However, while you will get a lot of great graphically beautiful, HD games on this system from those developers who can afford it... You will find that those who can't afford it will be reluctant to make games for the PS3.

But as I said in the Xbox360 thread, those who have aligned themselves with Sony won't budge, however Sony also attracts that majority of people who haven't aligned themselves, so it will be interesting to see if they will agree with the PS3 after they see the prices for the hardware and software. I think the PS3 will continue Sony's domination, but it won't be as dominant as the PS2 had been.

Playstation 3 to debut in May of 2006? (http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050520_131239.html)

Los Angeles (CA) - Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 game titles begin to appear in online game stores. EB Games offers pre-orders of PS3 titles with an estimated ship date of May 1 next year. Gamers should also expect a price hike of games that will initially sell for $60 and could even go as high as $80, according to sources.

Both Microsoft and Sony are very cautious to indicate any shipment dates of their next-generation game consoles. Microsoft official statement remains the device will be available for the holiday season and Sony hints to mid of next year.

Online game stores recently turned out to be a relatively reliable information source when it comes to release dates of future games and also could provide an idea when the new consoles can be expected. EB Games is the first large store that lists games for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 - 42 titles for Microsoft's console and 29 for Sony's contender. The store offers all titles for pre-order at this time.

ps32 Expected shipping dates are November 1 for Xbox 360 games and May 1, 2006 - a date that could indicate the launch of the Playstation 3. Sony officials declined to confirm this date or to be more specific about a launch date. Game developers who preferred stay anonymous said the date "would certainly be in the right time frame."

While new console games are currently priced around $50, new generation games appear to get more expensive. The new standard price appears to be $60, which reflects a 20 percent price hike. Some game developers on the show floor of the E3 even said new games could be priced as high as $80 in the future.

$60-$80 a game isn't looking good to me... Looks like a while wait for me to even grab one..
