Firstly, let me preface by saying that any console flaming(in any direction) will be *thoroughly frowned upon* and will Im sure be dealt swift justice by the Swamps mods...

However, I would like to see what others think about the news that PS3 will be supporting operating systems like the Linux and Appl OS x Tiger...

Taken from Official Sony UK site linkage (http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowArticle.action?article=1121156666920)

Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive. The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)

I hope other may be able to help clarify what this means.... Im assuming it will allow Apple to get into the gaming market and that devs can use Apple Tiger OS to make games for the Ps3...

All it means is that if Sony chooses, it could put either a Linux or Apple operating system on the PS3. I don't think that there's an actual buisness deal so far, just the opportunity for there to be one.

*I have an opinion*!

Gamecube rocks and PS3 sucks!

*sigh*

I actually asked for a trade in price for my GC the other day at EB.... their standard trade price for the console is $15... Ps2s and XBs get $75, which is better, but still sucks considering the price many forked out when they first came out :(

OT:
yeah, Im still unclear myself what the implications will be of the Ps3 being able to run these operating systems... As much as I like poking fun at Mac people, It'd still be good for Apple to get more involved in the gaming industry because competition is good AFAIC.

The big thing though, is that it's likely whoever is put on the PS3 gets to have access to BluRay. Granted, it may become a "free" format anyway, but still. No matter, whatever happens I'm sure someone will be able to mod the PS3 and get it to run whatever system they want. :p

I wouldn't sweat over it too much, Apple is switching away from IBM chips anyways and going with Intel... "talk of the town" so to say in the MAC world. I'm a MAC and PC user... (we're on neutral ground right? ..hehehe ) and it's obviously been planned for some time as exisiting MACs from the G4 era already have the underlying code necessary for the impending switch over.

Since the switch over to Intel will pretty much rely on x86 code (PC hybrid code), I'm kind of excited with the possibilites of what Apple Devs could bring to the industry... though in all honesty, no market in the world would drop a 90% market share that Microsoft has. But at least with players/devs having the option to use a different OS, I think it can only wind up leading to a better gaming market :)

I agree with Tyrion though, it's Blu-Ray that's the real clincher in this (the good kind of clincher).. the technology is amazing. At 25gb single layer and up to 50gb dual layer... we're going to have games "real" enough to cause nausea... literally... :D

if they ever made a new JK game that utilises Blu-Ray, I hope they improve Kyles outfit, because seeing all that freakin beige/brown in ultra high detail *will* make me sick :D

I'd just buy a PS3 and put an Os on it instead of buying a regular computer. If the PS3's tech specs area to be believed, then that it what I shall certainly do.

Indeed. The way I see it, they're just saving the modding community time.

I would use it as a PC. I'm probably going to eventually get all three next gen consoles anyways.

But wouldn't allowing a "freeform" operating system like linux or OSX to run on their system mean Sony looses all their controls over it? Systems like game licensing and xbox live (or whatever the sony version is) rely on the console being pretty locked down, don't they?

I'd be kind of surprised (but happy) if sony were willing to allow this sort of thing.

There will probably be some part of the agreement that makes the system incapable of online gaming or something of that sort.

The only thing I'm upset about the bigger memory capacity w/ blu ray is that most companies will squander it. I'd much rather have more variety of what the commentators say in a sports game than being able to see the sweat on the players' faces.
