Problem with hilts in multiplayer

I've downloaded a few custom hilts (ok, quite a few) and they seemed to be working well until a day ago or so. They just stopped appearing. I tried some of the original hilts and didn't have any luck with those either. No matter what hilt or weapon model I chose, it defaults to the 'reborn' hilt style.

Can anyone help me with this? Is it maybe the server that places a restriction on it?

custom hilts do not work when you try to play online unless the server has those hilts.

Or if the custom hilts "replace" one of the default ones, in which case you'll see that hilt, and you'll see it if another player is using one of the replaced hilts.. but nobody will see your custom hilts without that same file installed.
