View Full Version : The Fan Art Competition Thread (ex-poll)

08-16-2005, 11:10 AM
Tuetonic708 mentioned in another thread that there shoul be a competition to see who draws Manny the best. We could actually start holding fan art competitions and challenges in these forums. Things like "Draw the strangest couple you can think of", "Draw Manny as a hippie" and things like that. The winner of the competition could pick the next challenge and the next winner. It would then go on and on. And I bet someone with a GF site would really like to host the best pictures. James?

So, is there interest for this kind of thing?

EDIT: I changed the thread's title from "Interest for fan art competitions?". Just because I can, felt like it and think it suits the thread better now.

08-16-2005, 11:39 AM
Well, I'd participate, even if there's very little chance of it being any good. ;)

08-16-2005, 11:58 AM
I'd love to participate in a fanart contest! Yay!

08-16-2005, 12:08 PM
Then there are three of us already. I'm sure more people would come along.

Anyone who'd like to start by announcing a challenge?

08-16-2005, 12:31 PM
I vote you. ;D

08-16-2005, 12:42 PM
The mighty Thrik has spoken. Here goes:

Draw something that has at least two GF characters, a toaster and a kitten in it. Text can be added if you feel like it. You have five days, in case some decides to go professional and needs time.

08-16-2005, 02:43 PM
Tee. :~

Yes, that is indeed biro. :¬:

08-16-2005, 02:47 PM
Oh man, this is so called "art" !

Dont except anything good from me!

08-16-2005, 03:17 PM
Um, ok, sorry that I was totally too lazy to color it. Or shade it. Or even fill in their eyes. 0_o
See, it was originally gonna be this cool thing, where Domino was like, all black but his face and hands, and.. stuff... but I spent most of the morning putting a loooot of effort into this Psychonauts fanart/fanmade character contest thing, and now I'm like, blaaaaa, lazy.

08-16-2005, 03:19 PM
You forgot a link? :o

08-16-2005, 03:21 PM
No, I put it in, but it was too big at first, so I took it out to make it smaller.

08-17-2005, 10:40 AM
Whoa, those are both fantastic! I love the colours, style and idea in Thrik's one. Rubacava's picture has the characters true to the game and having Domino admire himself is classic. If nobody else takes part, I'm going to tear my hair out when trying to decide which should win.

08-17-2005, 10:59 AM
Let's see if this announcement helps get anybody else around. :~

08-17-2005, 03:06 PM

08-17-2005, 03:11 PM
Lol... that's special.

08-18-2005, 06:13 AM
Haha special indeed. Good work to the other fan-artists as well.

08-18-2005, 10:28 AM
Now that's original.

08-20-2005, 02:35 AM
If I counted the days right, this challenge ends today. And I've picked the winner, even though it was really hard and I'm now bald.

Rubacava's picture wins. The style reminds me of the game and while it isn't coloured, it delivers the message -- whatever that is. Also, it has Domino in it.

So, now it's up to Rubacava to announce the next challenge.

08-20-2005, 04:35 AM
Okay, hmmm. I'm so bad at thinking of things. I've thought of a couple, but judging by my mood... I think I'll go for the stranger one. Draw something along the lines of the theme "Grim Fandango meets Psychonauts". Either the two styles combined, or a mix of the characters, whatever. If you haven't played Psychonauts, you could look up some Psychonauts art and try drawing Grim characters in that style. People are prolly gonna hate this one... but oh well. @_@

I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier... somehow I managed to miss it :o. But it's a great idea, and the entries so far look great.

And I bet someone with a GF site would really like to host the best pictures. James?

Yup, I'd love to host the best pieces in the DOD's fan art (http://dod.dotagame.com/fan_art.php) section. If anyone wants their competition entry hosted then just send me a private message (http://www.lucasforums.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=80070), email (http://dod.dotagame.com) or just mention it in this thread, and then I'll add them right away :).

I would enter into this contest, but I'm not very good at hand drawn stuff. I'd give it a go if I could enter Photoshop created images, but it looks like everyone's hand-drawing their pieces.

08-20-2005, 10:11 AM
Okay, here is my entry to the new challenge. I want to stress that I've never played Psychonauts and finding useful screen captures was a little difficult, so the characters don't look like themselves very much. Loboto's bottom half was made up since I didn't find any pictures about his feet.

Click here and laugh! (http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/513/grimnauts3tb.jpg)

This is a fun challenge, Rubacava. :D

And James, I don't know about anyone else, but I don't mind computer-created images. As long as you create something of your own, it should be fine. *shrug*

08-20-2005, 10:17 AM
haha nice work

Ok, here's (http://www.ukmania.org.uk/upload/viewer.php?i=112455765840manny_raz.jpg) my attempt. It didn't really turn out how I planned it, because at the moment it looks like I just cut and pasted some stuff and applied a filter, but actually I drew it all out with the pen tool in Photoshop (which took a while). I thought I'd post it anyway though, because it took me some time...

08-20-2005, 01:27 PM
Wow, that's really good! The two heroes look magnificent together. Great colours, too.

08-20-2005, 04:30 PM
Ooooo, I love both of those. Picking will be hard. I'll let this carry on for a few days.

08-21-2005, 12:52 PM
Are renders of 3D models allowed?

08-21-2005, 12:59 PM
I don't know how those are made, so I'm not sure. Are they just computer-created art that is in 3D? I guess they are fine, unless someone objects.

08-21-2005, 01:18 PM
3D renders like this:
http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/7962/outsidedownfar2lx.th.jpg (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=outsidedownfar2lx.jpg)
(just something I worked on a while ago and should really finish some time :))

08-21-2005, 01:33 PM
Wow really nice! How long you have worked on that? I onced tried the Calavera Café in the unreal 2003 editor...well but it sucked, and I decided to make the LSA insteadwith 3dsmax.

What program did you use? And as far as I can tell, the moddeling looks very clean!
nice one!

James Isaac
08-21-2005, 01:39 PM
Yeah, that's great. Good luck with finishing it :)

I started the outside of the Department of Death (for the GF Half Life 2 mod) using HL2's map editor. It's recognisable, but it has a load of details which would need to be done as models in another program, and I can't do those myself. So far the only model we've finished to decorate the front of the building is a lamp-post by Xebozone ;).

http://img275.echo.cx/img275/2776/streetlamp0ej.th.jpg (http://img275.echo.cx/my.php?image=streetlamp0ej.jpg)

Doing the whole thing will take a while...

08-21-2005, 01:43 PM
This is the first large scale project I started on after switching from 3DSMax to Maya. I just absolutely love maya, I find it easier to model in Maya than in Max, but that's just personal preference. I might do the DOD in Maya too some time. I tried it once in Valve Hammer, but I didn't really like what I made so I quit that :)

08-21-2005, 02:54 PM
maya maya..everybody likes maya...
I dont think i will be better in maya ^_^

08-21-2005, 04:50 PM
hey guys..So it seems that you James and Steve are from the GF Hl2 Mod (http://dod.dotagame.com/ ) right?
hell guys how about show a bit more, hehe !

Correct. We don't have that much more at the moment, so we're going to save the rest of the stuff we do have for a big media update which will be in the news of the D.O.D. soon :)

08-21-2005, 05:34 PM
And of course we wouldn't want to get sued :p

08-21-2005, 06:05 PM
Ok Iam awayiting something really big very soon...
If you guys are not fast enough I just come up with the Calavero (o- to get not sued ;) Café by myself :P ...and let one of the Nightlight guys play with Glottis a duet ;)

08-22-2005, 10:21 AM
Those are fine with me. It apparently takes a lot of time and trouble to create those, so go ahead.

And those look very nice, even to someone with such untrained eyes as mine.

08-22-2005, 11:54 AM
Wow, this has gotten a little offtopic... o.o

08-23-2005, 12:01 AM
Okay, are there going to be any more entries?

08-23-2005, 04:57 PM
I'm not going to enter anything this time

08-24-2005, 01:24 AM
Hey, I'm supposed to be up, awake, and at work in four or five hours! This is the perfect thing to help me put off going to bed.

In other words, I have labored over an entry and will scan and post tomorrow.

EDIT: Clicky (http://www.kindofwonderful.com/imgs/fanart1.jpg)!

08-24-2005, 08:51 AM
I love the sketchy look of that one. And the fingers.

James Isaac
08-27-2005, 05:49 AM

When is the winner going to be announced, and the next competition start? I don't think there are going to be any more entries for this one.

By the way, great picture Alia :)

08-29-2005, 12:46 AM
Sorry, I was on vacation! This was very difficult. I loved the coloring on James Isaac's, and both Naomi's and Alia's made me laugh out loud. I think I'm going to go for Alia's though. Good job everyone!

08-29-2005, 11:10 AM
Sweet, sweet fame and glory! Thanks!

Anyway, here's the new challenge for our talented fan-artists...

Recreate a famous piece of art with a Grim Fandango twist! For example, draw American Gothic (http://www.uwm.edu/Course/448-192-001/wood.jpg) with Manny, Meche, and a scythe. It'd probably be good to post an image of the original piece along with your entry.

(Another great example is that Nighthawks picture on the Church of Tim website.)

Good luck, everyone!

08-30-2005, 03:59 PM
I've made a "remake" of the scream:) you can find it here (http://www.ukmania.org.uk/upload/viewer.php?i=112543140083Manny_Scream.jpg) :)
and you can find the orginal here (http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~ehab/scream.jpg) :)

note that i'm still pretty new with photoshop but i think it turned out pretty good:)

09-01-2005, 03:17 PM
For my entry I took the Mona Lisa and made my own version. For those of you that don't know what the Mona Lisa looks like: check it out! (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/vinci/joconde/joconde.jpg)
and my own version: check it out! (http://steve.dotagame.com/images/meche_lisa.jpg)
This was modeled, rigged, posed and rendered pretty quickly but I kinda like the end result, I don't like her smile, though. Made in Maya, edited in Photoshop

James Isaac
09-02-2005, 02:19 PM
Wow, those are both amazing :o. FleA_ you really made the style of Manny and his scythe look the same as the original painting. And Steve, well, great modelling :D.

I won't be entering anything this time though... I wouldn't be very good at this type of challenge.

09-02-2005, 02:23 PM
I was wondering when this contest is coming to an end, and is anyone else going to enter?

09-03-2005, 02:56 PM
Well, I read something at the beginning of the thread about each round lasting five days and I don't think we're going to get any more entries...so...I guess I should do some judging and choose a winner. Man, they're both so cool.

Can I call it a toss-up, or do I really have to pick one?

09-04-2005, 03:38 AM
Wow, those are both fantastic!

I really don't envy you, Alia. It must be hard to pick a winner between those two. If I were you I'd still do it though, since we need someone to name the next challenge.

09-04-2005, 08:25 AM
Okay, then.

This week's winner is FleA! Nice work from both of you, however.

09-04-2005, 12:30 PM
congratulations, FleA! I'm looking forward to your challenge

09-04-2005, 02:09 PM
Steve, I really liked your pic:)

So, I guess it's up to me to name the next challange...So here it is:

Create a scene with any characters/character from any LucasArts adventure game in any LucasArts adventure game world. But at least one character or place must be from Grim Fandango. Speech bubbles are optional.

Have fun:)

09-05-2005, 09:55 PM
Hey this is a great idea and I love all the artwork! But I cant get around to making anything in under five days. I could try and post something with photoshop but I'm not very good at it and my stuff looks sloppy. But I am working on the famous art idea right now but who knows when ill finish it.

09-10-2005, 07:17 AM
Is anyone going to enter anything or are you going to let the Fan Art Competitions die?:O:P

09-12-2005, 03:58 AM
I totally would, but I'm in Japan... If only I could find a scanner...

09-12-2005, 09:01 AM
MS Paint, man.

09-13-2005, 09:09 AM
I would like to take part, but I'm so busy with my examinations that I hardly have any free time. Ugh.

I think people might be "afraid" of this challenge because it's not very specific. While it tells you what to do, it gives you more freedom than the previous challenges and not everyone feels inspired by that. Or something. I don't even know why I'm analyzing this.

09-13-2005, 08:49 PM
This is NOTHING to do with the competition, little to do with Grim Fandango (it's Tierra de los Muertos stuff, but hey, skeletons are skeletons)

I call it 'Abbey Road'. Do a google search for it to see the Beatles' album cover :)

09-25-2005, 05:49 AM
Eehee! Hola, my compy's finally managed to load LucasForums without freezing. :D This fanart competition looks awesome. I'll wait for a new topic, though, before I decide on entering anything.
Btw, I love all of the past fanart entries. ^ ^ Great work you guys!

09-28-2005, 02:17 AM
Ok here is my very late entry for Alia's idea.
Freedom from Want by Rockwell. http://www.1st-art-gallery.com/artists/Norman%20Rockwell/Freedom%20from%20Want.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v348/xzooma/Projects/th_fandangofromwant.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v348/xzooma/Projects/fandangofromwant.jpg)

On to FleA's idea. Back in a few.
