If it's the same story I read about, the police had taken over the grocery store, and were giving things away. Also there was another store that just opened the doors and gave everything inside away, to prevent damage from looters. If it's neither of those stories, then I'd guess it was racist. Or simply another story I've not heard of. Either way, hurricanes+racism+looting=suck.

Cool, I'm white, I'm gonna go "find" a car.

The first article is from the Associated Press(Finding) while the second article is from the AFP(Looting. AFP is some French magazine, but I forgot its exact name.

I think the word usage just boils down to whoever happend to write each article.

And it appears that in one picture the people have a few items - like a couple of loaves of bread, a small amount of stuff to get through - and in the other one the person has at least two *trash bags* full.

We have no idea about the context in either case, and looking at the linguistics the word 'finding' appears grammatically incorrect in the second photo, making it look like a translation error.

While racism is a bad thing, people who go around seeing racism in every corner (including career 'race baitors' like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton) is not much better.

The bags could contain junk he brought with him, dry clothes and what not. And he happened to "find" the soda like the other people.

Anyway, yeah I poked fun about this before. Jokingly of course.

That is why I say that any judgement without context is bad - it is not only white against black, but black against white, gay against straight, and so on ... there seems to be a pop culture assumption that minorities can only be discriminated *against* ... which is foolish and wrong ...

Because what I see in both pictures is people struck by horrific tragedy trying to survive. I don't see 'black' or 'white' ... just people.

Well, what the hell do thry expect them to do?! Let all of that good food go to waste? No one is going to "loot" a Grocery store if they have to swim though water to get it unless they really need it. They lost their homes, pretty much everything they have. And they are threatening to kill people who steal bread and soda.

But I heard that other people are being stupid, by stupid I mean that they are looting liquor! Yah, lets go get a couple of bottles of Jack Daniels! Stupid.

And gangs are still going at it at that super dome thing. WTF?! Huge natural disaster and the ****ers are still at it?! God!

... I think if I lost all my stuff, I'd wanna drink too. It's like people that say don't give money to homeless people, they spend it on liquor. Well they have NO home, they have a damn good excuse to get drunk.

If I was pillaging, like Prime says, I'd have to be wearing my spear and magic helmet. :vik4: That or an eye-patch and a bandana. :Pir1:

Seriously, txa1265 is 100% right:

That is why I say that any judgement without context is bad - it is not only white against black, but black against white, gay against straight, and so on ... there seems to be a pop culture assumption that minorities can only be discriminated *against* ... which is foolish and wrong ...

Could the article be racist? Perhaps, but I don't think we're doing ourselves a favor by searching for it in every nook and cranny. Indirectly, an overzealous hunt for racism only perpetuates it.

Well, actually, this is stupid. This would only really be revelent if the same guy wrote the story. Some use loot, some pillage (well, not really), and find. So this is kinda stupid.

Kudos of the day.

Discrimination of majority groups and groups commonly known for being the oppressors is becoming a serious problem. Sure, we shouldn't discriminate women. Sure, there's been discrimination of women before. But that doesn't give the feminists the right to discriminate against guys, does it?

I heard this stuff is all crap.
The photographer was watching and taking pictures of people down on the streets, he says that the two white people where wading through the water when the bread and soda floated by, so they grabbed it for later.

But the kid entered the store and looted it, swimming out with food. The photographer was watching him and took a shot as he exited. So yah, the black kid did loot. The others really just found them by chance.

So, like, digest that real quick.

Well, my mom this morning just told me this in the morning when reading the news paper, the Seattle Times.

Besides which, white folks loot, too. Only it's not called looting when they do it. I refer you to a widely circulated news photo of a white couple wading through chest-high water after, in the words of the caption, "finding" food. As if that loaf of bread the woman has were just lying by the side of the road.

I'm sorry, but I have little patience for black people who find shame in this looting. Less patience for white ones who find vindication of their bigotry. It makes me angry that some people think these are the conversations we should be having now.Link (http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=pitts04&date=20050904&query=loot)

So like, maybe I misunderstood. So like, I dont know >_> She told me they did find it, oh well, I take it back I guess.

coupes.

Yes, I know, when I first posted this I didnt read the article, my mom told me that it cleared up the confusing saying what they did was true. Or maybe I wasnt listening closely enough. But after IS asked me for a link, I used the website and found the same article, which said otherwise. So yah, I know. :p

I notice Yahoo have now put a statement up:
http://news.yahoo.com/page/photostatement
and AFP have asked them to remove one of the pictures (oddly, the one of them "finding" stuff, not the one of the guy "looting")

I know they were written by different people, with different agendas, but the fact it has happens quite often implies its symptomatic of an underlying trend, not just an isolated event. Either way, what it does show is how by changing one word in a picture's caption you can totally change its meaning.

I've no problem with people "looting" food and supplies... its when they start "finding" TVs and other things that I start worrying.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/katrina/looters.asp is now updated, with statements from both photographers. The photographer who said "found" was at a place where water was carrying items out of a store. Thus, the white person probably just found it floating outside.
