Pretty awesome. Thought some of you might enjoy this as much as I do.

Sounds complicated. And expensive. :p

Yeah, like microchips.

Personally, this could very well lead to a breakthrough in processing power within the next decade. They said that "40 quibits equal supercomputers" and while I'm sure that's an exaggeration, it's still going to be one hell of a boost for the average user. This would be the next logical step, as relying on silicone for processors is heading to a wall; what with all the mhz actually melting the material...

Yeah, like microchips.

Yeah, but there's something about the term "rare-earth element" that makes me think "expensive".

Rare earth elements aren't all that rare. They in 40 dollars headphones, for instance.

From answers.com:

rare earths, in chemistry, oxides of the rare-earth metals. They were once thought to be elements themselves. They are widely distributed in the earth's crust and are fairly abundant, although they were once thought to be very scarce.

And with that, I > You.

I've read a lot about the things that would be possible with quantum computers...Personally, I can't wait! :)

tis another step towards laser-pulse weaponry and yet another step into the decimation of our Earth as we know it. No need to worry bout Mother Nature... We will kill ourselves off through Science...

Noez, the end is near!

Sounds cool

Damn, I could play Doom 6 really well on a quantum computer :D

Closer to an understatement than an exaggeration.

And there is the useless this > that too. Seems a little elitist. ;)

That's the plan. :p

Closer to an understatement than an exaggeration.

Huh.

If that's the case, I wonder where they're going to store all that information into. RAM is getting slow as it is, but with super-computer power it's going to be crippled. Wonder if the quantum stuff can also hold information?

... Quantum MEMORY. The whole idea is that you are storing information onto light. What it comes down to is being able to read and write to and from this light, and all within practical time. Essentially slowing light indefinitely, or something like that.

I think I remember seeing an article about this over a year ago, in a popular science magazine. Maybe it was just saying that they would try, not that they had actually done it.

You know what would be great? A picture of an owl, with a caption that read "HOOOOOOO CARES?!?!". That would complete me.

Anyway, looking foward to these crystal computers, I wonder if they will run windows....

Thats kinda cool. Its guaranteed to be expensive though, new tech always is. And everyone complains about a $400+ PS3 with a Cell processor, wait until the PS4 comes around with Quantum Memory... $10000000000000.99 phew.... save your complaints until then.
