View Full Version : Who spars with Lightsaber?

I know, I know.....this sounds bizarre (Maybe not).

I being SW fans since I was a kid (Born in 1976).
Got my first Lightsabers (Luke & Darth) in 1994 then Darth Maul's in 1999.
Recently got the Ultimate Lightsaber set when my bro went to US.

I and my mates would take the lightsabers and spar with each other.
That was sooo cool man. And we would quote lines like "Your powers are weak, I find your lack of faith disturbing or I am now the Master!"

Wonder any1 here does that too?

I even adopted Chinese, Japanese and Western swordfighting in the sparring too.
Yes, I am a Chinese. I find Chinese swordstyle cool ( although tiring ) and I would adopt them into lightsaber style.

Ever heard of the novel: The Sword of Heavens & The Dragon Saber?
Well, it's from the trilogy of how the Chinese overthrow the Mongols in the 14th century.

The line starts like this (approx meaning):
The Saber of Dragon Slaying. Who dares not to contest for it?
The Sword of Heavens reigns supreme. Who dares not to acknowledge it?

Welcome to the forums SixShot .... interesting topic :)

Ive never had the toy/replica sabers, so I cant say that I have sparred with a saber.

Of course, everyone as kids has had a mock sword fight with a broomstick and the like, but I dont think thats the same thing :)

When I was younger I would always so lightsaber fights in my driveway and basement with my brother and friends. We had a good time :)

Actually, this halloween I dressed as Obi-Wan and a senior at my school dressed as Darth Sidious, so naturally we had a lightsaber battle. The Dark side won that battle though :(

Not really. Sure beats just fantasizing in my mind. At least, I can act out the actions with my mates.

We are all sort of swordfighting fans. Western and Eastern stuffs.
So we would experiment with all sorts of sparring styles.
(With safety precautions, we wouldn't to lose an eye or a limb)

We talked about what the Force is capable of beyond Star Wars movie.

Like using the Force to generate kinetic energy with the power of a concussion missile, or generate kinetic force with 'saber slash that meant to attack enemies a distance away.

After all the Force is not just limited the capabilities declared in the
Star Wars Universe.

Obi Wan in ANH:
The Force is what gives a Jedi his powers. It is an energy field that is created by all living things. It surrounds, and penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.

The Lightsaber
This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians or peace and justice in the Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire....

My friend and I used to "spar" with plastic baseball bats when we were younger. It got pretty intense; we stopped doing it after he splintered my bat with a particularly forceful swing. :indif:

Recently though, I just satisfied my saber-lust be joining a fencing club. It worked pretty well, and it's an intense workout to boot. Swordplay is a very interesting topic in general, and it sounds pretty neat that you've built on your technique in your sparring.

Yeah, I learnt a lot along the way.

Chinese style is OMG a lot.
Euro also a handful.
But it's very enriching for me and my mates.

SixShot

But it's very tiring. 5 mins into the fight, we are panting like hell, sweating like waterfall.

I try Count Dooku style. My left arm ached after that. Oww!!!
But Count Dooku style's cool man!

SixShot

You know, guys.
Ever thought of adding more styles to the Lightsaber hilt?
Like for me, a Hilt with a Chinese Dragon head, jaws gaping. When ignites, it emits a yellow blade.
Maybe more elegant one would be a lotus flower head, when ignites, the petals would open and out comes the blade!
Or a spear head type. The spear head splits in 2 and ignites.

The Sith types would be a skull with a open/close jaws or a gargoyle with open/close jaws or a demonic claw as blade emitter. With black finish hilt! Badass man!

Back in 2000 I got a plastic toy version of Qui-Gons saber and my bro got a toy Darth Maul's saber, and we dueled a little bit with those, but my bro's saber was cheap and if you hit it even the smallest bit to hard the blade went flying off.

I've never sparred with a fake light saber. But my brothers and are friends would play what we could "Swords" with wood pulls and some time we'd protend that we had foce powers and all that stuff. Ah... Thoughs were fun times. But now every one is older and plays PC insted of doing that type of stuff.

Well, for halloween my friend (MagnaGuard) and I dressed up as Jedi. I was dressed up as Anakin Skywalker and my friend....well....I am not sure exactly what he was suppose to be. We both had lightsabers and we spared, but then again...I'm 15 (turned 15 yesterday) and he's 14.

It's Ok. I am 29 this year. 30 the next year, I still like to spar with Lightsabers.
Gives me a good workout alternatively than just doing sit-ups, & push ups.

:eyeraise: And why is that sad?

I don't think you're at all grasping what he means by sparring. It is an excellent workout, and much more interesting than doing generic pushups. If anything, women would be more enticed by someone who spars as opposed to someone who does the occasional crunch. On top of that, you learn a more effective method of self-defense. Hardly something to be sad about.

han sala, I'm getting tired of your off-topic chatter. You should check out the forum's COC (http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64362) before posting anymore. You've been warned.

I am sorry If I find that wierd... And isnt this kind of an off topic forum??? "Visitors beware! Almost anything goes in the Cantina, whether it be Star Wars related or not!" Have never gotton that about the rules of Lucasforums... I dont know maybe I am just crazy. From now on I will try to stay on topic no matter what my opinions are. I will also try my hardest to make sure not to "Flame" did not see that when I read the COC few months ago...

I dont think you Quite get what he means lol

I know a few months ago there was a martial arts magazine with Obiwan on the cover think it had a piece in there about Lightsaber combat in the movies and such.

I think its random sabers where you can buy Stunt Sabers with rods in them these would be perfect for sparring!

http://randomsabers.com/blades.htm

Have a look there! they also have some pretty nice custom saber designs!

Lightsaber comabt used as a excercise seems absoloutly brilliant to me! ok so the sabers arnt real but all the moves are there and its safe and fun and get you fit!

Sixshot do you ever incorporate the different Forms of lightsaber combat?

Well, I haven't try that though.
No manuals I know of show me the fighting styles.
Count Dooku does the Makashi, right?

I do know a couple sword of sword techniques like the Wu Dang 7 Star formation or Er Mei Execution stab.
I got the book for referance.

SixShot

I don't run around in the field wielding a lightsaber.
In my country, space is premium. But I have big living room to spar around.

SixShot
12-14-2005, 07:29 AM
For start, I don't know really know much about saber styles.
I emulated the styles from Chinese sword styles.
For example, I mentioned the Wu Dang 7 Star formation; it's 7 men wielding swords in the formation of the Big Dipper. These 7 men have to be trained from young for that.
It is a defensive formation. When used properly, it can hold off 100 men.

The Er-Mei execution stab is a swift lethal jab from a sword as a classic "Finish 'em" move. The Er-Mei are made of nuns entirely. Being female, they have none of the stamina or strength in males. So they rely on swift & desicive moves to determine the fight.

There is also a quasi Force thingy about it.
In a Chinese novel, a master by the name: Dugu Qiubai (say: Doo Guu Chuyou Baai) meaning "Alone & Seeks for Defeat" is so well versed that even a stick in his hands becomes a weapon. His philosophy is that: "Although my hand have no sword, but in my heart, has a sword therefore I have in my hands"

His principle of no technique equals best technique because one cannot break a form if there is no form. Therefore, in theory this style of fighting has no style and cannot be defeated.

It only uses attack techniques. The idea is that when one forces one’s enemy to have no other choice but to defend himself, there is no need to defend one’s self.

Sparring is basically martial arts. Ergo: Jet Li. It's marginal.

@SixShot
I haven't seen the trailer, no. Thanks for the link. :)

I suppose you've seen the movie "Hero", right? There was some excellent choreographed "swordfights" in that movie (along with stunning scenery, etc.). Some really amazing moves that must have taken a while to perfect. Something of that magnitude to act out (basically, spar) would really...top...one’s achievement list.

Sorry about going way off the subject, guys.
I apologise for that.

But that's where one get inspiration of sparring from.
Imagine Star Wars' saber scenes are vibrant, over the top and at times, incredulous.
It adds to the magic of Star Wars.

That's Jet Li's last movie.
The docs says After years of training & fighting, Jet's bones are screwed for life.
The man's trained at Shaolin temple since he was a boy.
He punched at vat of beans for hour to harden his knuckles, was so tough that he can tear phonebooks in half with his bare hands.

At least Jackie Chan didn't wind up like him even though he and Eviel Kneivel can compare who broke the most bones.

Can you spar with force FX sabers? I thought they were props!

@Skye: Fencing is good but not my style. Far too "English" for my liking (even though I am English).

In my opinion its the lightsabers that are the best part of StarWars. Some of the scenes are sooo cool especially in RotS! After watching RotS I watched RotJ and was so disapointed because I remembered the sparring to be really googd in that but compared to RotS its pretty crap.

I aways used to spar with my brother. We Always had blistered knuckles from hitting each others hands with wood and metal but you get used to it. We started hitting each others sticks and poles et cetera so hard that every pole of wood got splintered and metal got snapped (hollow metal poles). We used Iron rods once and dented them loads.

Nowadays my bro doesnt relly do it so I piss about with snooker cues and stuff :D. I dont really focus on trying to learn forms I just copy off films and stuff (ever seen Bullet Proof Monk..?) I am really "elagant" (if thats the right word) sometimes. I can spin poles with my hands (and one hand) REALLY fast.

ahh, yess, once... it was good, coordinated... shok_tinoktin was with me on that one, although we didn't call them lightsabers, they were "electro-toxicators" or something to that effect... couldn't call them lightsabers, as it was for a school project... but we used the single blade, dualies, and the double-blade... man that was fun... took a long time coordinating though, and even then, some improvisation took place... man, that was fun

Hey, sparring with lightsabers has no age limit. Just because we're not physically kids anymore doesn't mean we can't still be kids at heart. :D
My friends/sisters and I used tomato stakes and broom sticks after SW and ESB came out (they really didn't have anything else then, and the toy lightsabers fell apart or bent if you hit them too much). Then some of us graduated to fencing, and some of us graduated to history re-enacting clubs that use either fencing gear or fake swords.
However, when my son got a couple of toy lightsabers for a gift, I, of course, had to try them out by sparring with him. Too fun!
