View Full Version : Kyle Katarn Look-a-like (either game)

My man Kyle has gotten a bad rep as of late. But as one of the longest running characters in comp games period, he deserves better then what he gets now :p That, and he's drop dead sexy.

that being said, i've had some things stewing in my head for a while now, and i've toyed with a few of those ideas, not all of them have had success.

There are a few thing's i would ask for-
A re-skin or re-model of a head to resemble kyle, the 2nd caucasion head in k2 is a good place to start (the blonde), but the forehead is too large, and the hair has issues :P. For k1, there are several heads that might be a good starting point, depending on how they are tweaked.

To go with the above heads, a reskin of the scout clothing from k1 (its in both games i think, so yay!) into something resembleing this -

If we color the sleaves and vest of the scout clothing correctly, make the mid-torso and parts of the gloves have a grey/metalic/armor look to it, this could probably work. Either that or steal carth's jacket for k1 :p The skining for the outfit i can morethen likely do myself.......but i have no experiance with alpha chanels and transperancy.....so the metalic portions would be "simple" photoshop work. And I know some of you out there love your little metalic addons ;). So if no one is willing to tackle this part, i could give it a whirl, but it might not look as 'pollished' compared to the work of others.

If this isnt do-able, or that model just wont work, then for k1, a reskin of a jedi robe, with the tailflaps erased would work i imagine (for the jko look for kyle). And for k2, the padawan robe model with the cloak part cut short, into a short jacket, would more then sufice.

I would also appricate a saber similar to kyles' from jko and jka, to match jediwarriar's latest hilt of kyle's saber from df2-jk for k2, which i fully plan to use ^^

And due to the fact he is from a different game/games, there are rule 14 issues to be adressed. I stress that i do NOT want something that looks like a carbon copy or a port from Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Mysterys of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, or Jedi Academy (even if a port from DK, jk or mots into either of these games would be hilarious to see xD).

HOPEFULLY i broke no rules in asking for this, i checked and im fairly certain that i did not.

I hope i get some ppl's minds turning on this one ;) and i hope to see the ever gallant kyle katarn's look-a-like in a kotor game near you!

It is mirrored for both the top and bottom half of the hilt, so think of a quigon-ish style hilt - smothe on one side, grip on the other. With a luke ep6/obiwan ep3 style emitter, but more uniform instead of the cone look that they have.

I'm making 2 versions of this hilt, 1 low poly (896) and 1 detailed (1,752) I myself like higher poly hilts for a few reasons. They are funner to model, they look better in game, and they are easier IMO to texture, I was gonna just ask which one you wanted. I felt that people will all have different views on the subject, and that it would be easier for everyone if I just did 2 versions.

high poly doesnt effect my system that much, and mine stinks! :p

so whichever you feel would look better, be easier, or whichever lol ;)

Cool :), I have the modeling/texturing finished on the high poly all I have to do is get it in game and that will be done. I'm still gonna release both of them in one download, so it will take a bit longer I'd expect it on pcgamemods in the morning sometime. It turned out pretty good, although the preview won't do it very much justice because of the way 3d max does it's shadowing but I don't think you'll be dissapointed once you see it in game.

thats after 15 minutes of tinkering, quite obviously (the chest is terrible :p) I was toying with this before i went to work (just a basic overwrite of the scout clothing in k1) and a storm hit, so i shut down my comp to help protect it should i have gotten a powersurge =/ (lost my old hd that way, but anyway!). I hope this might help stimulate some discussion or some insights, or just thoughts in general ;)

J3d1W4rr10r, a few questions i pose to you-
Should no one else wish to do this, would you mind if I added your sabers to a mod that would involve all of the stuff i mentioned in the first post? (whenever i find time to finish it all of course :p)

and would you mind adding the new hilts into k1 as well? *puppydog eyes* pweese?
If not, im more then happy right now, so dont do it unless you want to ;)

the sleaves look like i tossed paint on them, the shirt looks like.............i honestly have no idea what it looks like :p

i tossed a color and texture overlay on those portions of the image........while watching the simpsons........so it took me 15 minutes......real hard work.....right...........

so yes, they suck!

for the moment ;) let me fiddle with them for a few hours or days, then judge meh work! ;) but then i'd make a wip thread like a normal person........wait.........whats normal again? I'm so confused :o

Ya I'll add this hilt to kotor too, since you want me to do that I'm just gonna forego the low poly version of the hilt. It's not like this one is over the top on polys, I just don't think it would look as good if I kept with the other plan plus it will be alot more work which I don't really have time for. I assume your wanting the other Katarn hilt I just released in kotor also? I'll release this one for TSL first maybe tonight, then release the other 2 in a pack sometime tomorrow or the next day.

And the other question about releasing them with your Katarn mod, as long as I get credit for the sabers it's no problem..;)

the scout clothing model is in k1 and k2, so it would work, with either a new head or a modified appearance.2da file. Im tinkering with skins for k2 faces and such, but the shape of the heads will still be quite obvious that it isnt kyle or his lookalike =/

i DO have one for k2 that is getting closer, but it still needs loads of tweaking, and its based on infinity blade's mercenary kyle model for jko. A bit more stuble and some more work on his hair, and i think we will be close.

getting clothing that will look like his from either the cutscenes in df2-jk, or his clothing in jko/jka more then likely WON'T be possible. the closest thing that is in the 2 games is the disciple's clothing model.

if anyone else has any ideas, im more then willing to entertain them ;)

The Jedi Guardian clothes also look vaguely similar to Kyle's clothes. Vaguely...

no matter which model is used, it will be quite obvious what it was originaly.

in all the games, while not being thin/short or really tall/muscular, he was no slouch either. He was usualy of average/above avarage hight, and average build.

The scoundrel/smuggler/mercenary model that is used in k1 is a tad below average hight, and thin.

The padawan robe model might be off the list, as it has no actual upper leg/butt area. Its covered by the trailing edge of the tunic. If I could skin the backpack and some of the belts and stuff off of the old soldier model from k1, that might work just fine.........but i dont think that will work, there would be nothing underneith where those parts were, i imagine.

using the old k1 jedi robe model and skining off the trailing edges that go behind is still a possibility, as is the class 5 armor.

After coming across it in game, I'd say now that Tobin's superior (Vaklu?) would be the best head for Kyle.

I had actualy considered Vaklu, but i was going to try to avoid any head that was used in an obvious place in-game =/

but rest assured, that head model is being kept in consideration ;)
