I am really new to this mod/editing thing, so if anyone could help me get started on what I need to know or what to do that would be great!

Try reading the 'getting started guide' document in the documents folder of the mod tools. Thats a good place to start. It tells you how to create a map, add a CP, and add vehicles. There is also a getting started guide for space maps.
