View Full Version : Realtrace in OJP basic?

Is there any chance of getting you to put realtrace or some kind of improved hit detection in OJP Basic? Would that be too much work? Or would it really be too much of a gameplay change? I don't mean all this new stuff, just the old realtrace function.

It's a big improvement over basejka hd behavior, which is sad enough to be called a 'bug' imho.

Yeah, I've been considering it. What does everyone else think about this?

Well, I certainly know little enough about it, but anything has to be better than Base JKA.

So, yes.

Please!

After playing enhanced, it's very frustrating to play anything else (the saber collision detection just plain stinks).

The problem here is that there's a chance that the shoddy hit detection actually IMPROvES the balance.

You see, with better hit detection, like in XMod2, you'd notice that dual and staff are EVEN MORE broken with EVEN BETTER block. Reborn is speaking with ignorance.

Well, that is a possibility. However, I don't think it should make that much of a difference with the way basejka handles blocks.

Puh-Leese.

Anyway, how about making a 'singles only' option? It has been nothing but trouble including the Staff/Dual.

I call it a problem when direct red hits get deflected more than they should.

I say why not give it a shot. If it changes things too much or unbalances something, just get rid of it. On the otherhand, it could be the best thing to happen to basic in a long time. If it's not, nothing irreversible at OJP.

That's what I told Razor. The problem is, it may be hard to remove once in.

Well, if its code based, razor can just back up the old code. If the real trace screws things up, razor can just delete the new code and paste the old code back in. Shouldn't be too much of a problem, but we'll have to see what razor says.

Uh, hit detection shouldn't have anything to do with that...the only problem I can see is that the saber blades might be "in the way" more often, but that's more accurate to what the player is seeing anyway.

Right, it is reversable. However, I'd prefer to not put work into it if people didn't want it in the first place. :)

I don't know about the balance issue, but think it's sad that the game would rely on clear faults to address it, so that swung sabers erroneously going right through each other would be be seen as a crucial feature.

I have been impressed with *open* OJP as a project for cleaning up and enhancing the code base for the use of further modders to build upon. I think that's a great service to the community and have taken advantage of it myself. I also think that Enhanced is no longer right for that since the saber system has been changed so radically. Basic is a fine base for to build on but without realtrace it's missing out, it doesn't even compare. I've tested saber swings vs. other sabers and bodies too alot (I mean ALOT) and base saber hit detection isn't an option worth considering if you like duels in which when and where you swing matters.

I'd put it in myself if I knew how to do it.

...Exactly the problem. Do we REALLY need to give staff and dual (mostly dual in my experience with XMod2 and improved hit detection) the chance of a BIGGER advantage?

If I had the choice between mildly wrong saber hit detection and a less broken saber game, it's suddenly not so clear what to pick.

Well Lathain would you agree to a test run to see whether your fears are justified?

Lathain Valtiel
03-31-2006, 09:10 AM
I would agree to a test. I just have a problem if it's proved unsuited to the base game and then we find out it's hell to remove.

Going back to a version of the code that doesn't have it shouldn't be a problem at all. The things under a version control system after all and I'm sure Razorace is handy enough with it. I've got a copy of Basic as it is atm without realtrace, checked out today (march 31 2006) at 11:11AM. How hellish could it be to go back to it if necessary?

razorace
03-31-2006, 03:37 PM
Assuming that we don't make many changes after the switch to realtrace, not much. It would a little hassle, but not much of one.

Vruki Salet
03-31-2006, 03:42 PM
I assume not many changes would be made until after it was tested for awhile on the servers.

By the way, how hard a job would it be to put it in there?

razorace
03-31-2006, 04:05 PM
oh, probably a couple hours of work.

Lathain Valtiel

Eh, go ahead and do it. I want to see it now out of curiousity.

DAMN YOU CURIOUSITY! YOU CAT MURDERER!

Razorace do you have any word on this? It looks like the votes are all yes, at least tentatively yes since Lath came over to the dark side.

I'm planning on doing this. Unfortunately, any OJP work is going to have to wait until I'm caught up with all my homework. It's been a very busy time @ school.

Vruki Salet

I was thinking that might be the case since activity here has been low lately. Thanks Razor.

I think he's wondering where the heck razor is since most colleges are out. To answer his question, a few days after he got out of college, he went on vacation with his family and is still gone. I personally thought he'd be back by now, but I guess they take long vacations.... with no internet access......or something. Patients. He shalt return soon, I hope.

Just curious, where are you? (state or province for US/Canada, else country). We've had lots of rain and gray skies lately here in northeast US.

Singapore. Yeah lots of rain over here too, but since we're living near the equator, rain is replaced by snow during the snowing season :P

(sign) Oh alright. But just to let you know, I'll be gone in a week myself for a while with out any internet access most likely. I would prefer that a new release gets out before I go so I can play test while I'm away. I also would like a few adjustments made that are mostly bug fixes before it's released. I have a list of stuff at the saber suggestions thread up a little ways. I might also talk to you about them through IM when your on. Have fun with thine girlfriend.
