Hey! What does everyone around here do for a living? http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/smile.gif

I know that Gundog makes airplanes at Boeing, and Nute it seems works in a coffee shop. I'm just curious...what do we all do at work?

I realize that most of us will say student. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/rolleyes.gif You young 'uns should put down what you want to be or are studying to be.

I'll start. I'm a champion podracer who hyper-sets around the galaxy in his Corellian XTC-9000, living the high life...oh, for real? I'm a simple cook. I work in a very busy Applebee's restaurant--a big part of my job is training some of the new cooks who often are just starting (I've been cooking since 1986) to learn the profession. Coincidentally, many of the people I work with are about the same age as most of the members here.

I went into cooking because I liked the creativity. The restaurant I'm working at now requires no creativity (in the culinary sense, anyway) but pays the most. Such is life. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif

I would give anything in the world to be a musician. A pianist, I think. To walk out on stange all alone, sit at the end of a beautiful Steinway concert grand and play Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" piano sonata - that's what I want. To sit through all 45 minutes of the piece, and pound it out without missing a single note. That is my dream. Sadly, even though I know I am very good pianist, I will never be good enough to achieve that dream no matter how hard I try. So, I am majoring in computer engineering. I hate it with ever fiber of my being, but I know that I CAN do a good job at that. Oh well - I hate my job already, and I don't even have one yet! Wow, my life sucks http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/frown.gif At least I'm going to heaven when I die, suckers http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif

I didn't do it because I know I can't. Maybe I could be a good pianist, or even a good violinist. I might make a low to mid seat at a fair orchestra. But I will just never be a Stern or an Ax. I know I don't have to be that good, but the life of a simply "good" musician is not that great. Bad pay, no job security, etc.

And even if I knew I could make it big, I'm still not sure that I'd do it. The thing is, I really wanted to marry this girl and start a family with her. (Sadly, she dropped me like a bad habbit a couple of months ago, as soon as she got to college. Now I must win her heart again, somehow...) She IS a violin major, by the way, but with a focus in education. But anyway, assuming I can fix things with her or maybe even find someone new (no luck there so far http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/frown.gif) I'd really like to be a husband and father. And I just don't think it would work out that great if I had to travel all the time and all that. And if I didn't make it big, then I really wouldn't have good enough security for a family. It seems there is no way to win on this one. But I still play on my own. Even though nobody will ever see me, playing for myself brings me a great deal of happiness.

Interesting to hear you say that Keyan. I went to school and got a major in music. Taught for a year, and realized that my true calling was in computers. So now I'm the IS manager of a small hardware reseller and my job includes (you listening, Gunner?)building and maintaining servers, doing some light programming (VB/SQL/ASP), and the oddball tech support call that the other guys have no clue how to fix.

But I have a lead on a new job, which will be primarily programming VB and SQL. So I need someone to take over my job, and there's no one in this building who's qualified. You wanna move to California, Gun-dog? http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/biggrin.gif

So you're interested in cooking, Zargon? I'd be glad to give some advice. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/smile.gifFirst, of course, you should try working in a restaurant for awhile before you commit to going to culinary school. Professional cooking is one of the most stressful careers you can choose...a dishwashing job would give you a chance to see what those poor bastards go through each day!

Say you're crazy enough to still want to pursue cooking, congratulations. You've chosen a career where it is almost always possible to find work, anywhere, and where you sometimes get to stretch your legs creatively. Unfortunately, you will never be rich. You have been warned. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif

Culinary school is the best way to go, although I must confess that I, myself, did not. Cooking is one of the few skilled professions left where it is possible to learn your craft entirely on the job, and make money doing it. Most of my formal culinary experience comes from six and a half years working for Red Lion Hotels. Many hotels and country clubs are accredited by the American Culinary Federation, and are excellent places to learn the fine points of culinary science.

Hope this helps. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/biggrin.gif

So, what did I want to be when I was a kid? I wanted to be a stage actor. I was in all the plays in highschool and college...my best role was a Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman that brought the house down. Actually, she might be little overqualified. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/biggrin.gif This is just a small operation!

I work in Tustin, CA. There's actually two companies in the office, CD CyClone which is a manufacturer of CD duping machines, and Mediastore which is a reseller for all things CD-R related. I was being kinda facetious about the job offer. In all honesty, I wouldn't wish this job onto my worst enemy (though I might be convinced to let n00t have it http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif). The management here is pathetic. They have no concept of running a business. The new place I (might be) going to will be a nice change of pace... Management that understands what running a company is all about!

if there is something that I relly want to be: it's a solo guitarist. Not one of those guitarist like Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and such that lack creativety but Guitarists like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani or Paul Gilbert, all those artist create instrunental electric guitar masterpieces.

I bet no one ever heard of those guys, anyways if someone is curious, here are good titles you can get with napster, just choose:
By Satriani:
-Surfing with the Alien
-Satch Boogie
-Tears in the rain (soft)
-midnight (soft)

By Vai:
-The audience is listening
-For the love of god (soft)
-The Animal

by Gilbert:
-Gilberto Concerto (kinda like betthoven)

That's what I want to do,
but I'm sure I'll end up as a bum...

Zoom, I am looking at business because of the money problem and my HUGE love for cars. I figure getting a nice business degree and knowledge of things like accounting means that someday I could run my own restaraunt. My parents however, do not like this idea as they see me living at home well past my graduation, which would be terrible! I am looking at getting a job with a very popular catering biz in town that would let me actualyl possibly do a bit of cooking right off the bat

I really don't think I can be. Like I said though, having a wife and children is more important to me than my dream. If that means I have to have a job that isn't exactly what I love to do, then that's OK. Most people my age think of getting married as some sort of curse, but I can't wait for the day when I look down at my little baby and he or she calls me "Dad-da". When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a bird painter. I wanted to go out in the wild, catch birds and paint them with bright, fluorescent paints. I would make designs on their wings and paint their little heads to look like cartoon characters...maybe glue sequins on the tips of their feathers and tie ribbons to their tail or something nice like that. Perhaps bells.

Jem, it's okay to pursue your art without having to make a living from it*...some of us even think that keeps it pure, in a way. I've always gotten a lot of enjoyment from creative writing without ever intending to make a penny doing so.

Unless George Lucas decides he wants a personal chef/transcendental humorist for his team. Then I'm a commodity, like wheat. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/biggrin.gif

<font size=1>*It is, however, important to do something for a living. A lot of artists don't get that.</font>

Quite the opposite! Beethoven was the first in a long time to compose cello sonatas. The first, I believe, to compose them for cello and piano (instead of harpsichord). He also gave the cellos greater parts in orchestral pieces, instead of just having them play the same thing as the double basses. Nute, your particularly high score on the fag0t meter may make you unable to appreciate the great master, but never think such lies about him!

And big surprise yesterday: we got a new member in the family; his name is Charlie and he's very funny and sleeps a lot. The first night he was in sleeping in the kitchen and kept crying every 30 minutes so we decided to put him in the garage with are night guard so he could keep him company. Charlie is very funny and love to play and wiggle his tail http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif (if anyone didn't figure it out by now Charlie is a puppy) I'll post a pic as soon as I have one.

Wow, this post is way out of the thread's topic...

Lessee....I spent 17 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, first as a Medic, then as a specialist in Aviation Physiology. I taught said subject to aircrew, jet passengers, and basically anyone that needed or wanted to fly in CF aircraft. I retired from full time service in 1996 and have spent the last 4 years in the Air Force Reserve, first as an assistant air controller in Search and Rescue, now as a Barrack Warden. I also teach Martial Arts part time. I have First Degree Black Belts in Chito-Ryu Karate and Canadian Jiu-Jitsu, I'll be testing for my second dan in Jiu-Jitsu next Fall. For fun, I'm the Choir Director at our church in Trenton.

Beethoven hated me. I know he did.
Either that or the HS orchestra director was conspiring to make me hate beethoven by only picking stuff he did that had lousy cello parts.

Garyah99, you were a medic? Wow! I served as a field corpsman in the USNR. Small world...or just a lot of medics.

I'm envious of the martial arts stuff. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif I play with swords in the back yard, but I've never studied the systems formally. It would probably throw me off at this point, because I've been mixing Japanese and French fencing forms for the last twenty years.

Hey Zoom! yes I spent 5.5 years as a Medic, then remustered to an aviation physiology specialist (in Canada it's called an Aeromedical Technician). As far as Martial Arts is concerned, it's never too late. In traditional Karate-do, we don't really work with swords, as a rule. That's more of a Kendo/Aikido/Ninjitsu thing. If you want to try a simple empty hand art, try traditional Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Tae-Kwon-Do, or one of several others styles. They won't mess up what you do already with the sword. If want to use a sword in the traditional Japanese/Chinese styles, try one of the styles I mentioned before or a Kung-Fu/Tai-Chi variant. And R9, I only spent 2.5 years in the Army, the rest of my carreer, including my current status is Air Force! <font size=3> SO THERE!!!</font> http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif

Wally the space dolphin thinks that communism should be forced on the people of Japan, so they will be hobbled economically and unable to form dangerous alliances with other Pacific rim nations.

He also cautions that impalas are not safe animals to keep as pets, and should only be cared for by qualified personnel in a zoo setting.

Thus the value of a lightsaber. Or one of those katanas from Highlander that can vanish into thin air when you don't need them. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/rolleyes.gif

I've considered learning martial arts, but I never have time (or serious desire) to take the effort. I prefer to just play around with melee weapons.

Most of my characters tend to create their own fighting techniques anyway; karate isn't that helpful against a six-foot tall eight-limbed armoured assault trooper.

The most dangerous fighter is the one who doesn't know what he's doing.

Ah, yes...the magic katana that disappears into the folds of any longish coat. Quite a trick, there. And us rabbits know all about hiding in small spaces!

I've always wondered why he never uses a scabbard. In my day, a samurai that didn't keep his blade properly oiled with choji oil and put away repectfully in a scabbard was asked to lean on his knife!

Hey, Tycho.

I've been around. You apparently, have not. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif

Zoomie, I was referring to the TV series, especially one scene in which McCloud was working out (wearing sweat pants), then pulls on a loose tank-top.

He is then confronted by another Immortal, reaches behind his back and, apparently, pulls his katana out of his ass. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/eek.gif
