A mod (modification) is a file that you can download to enhance the game in some way. Some of them add new items, some new characters, some new quests, etc. There are millions of them out there. The best site to get the from is PCGM (www.pcgamemods.com). It's not updated that much anymore, but it's still got some good ones archived there.
