Hmmm... that's not quite true anymore. The latest Crutchfield catalog has CD/ MP3 car stereos. Expensive enough to keep the riff-raff (like myself) away for a bit. I guess you have to burn yhe mP3 data files onto the CD and it can read and play them. You can get several hours of music onto a single disk this way. Kinda cool I guess.

No it's not an audio CD, it's a data CD. Trust me, I deal with this stuff for a living, I'm a recording engineer. This deck can read MP3s direct off the disk (CD-R or CD-RW), so you can get up to 10 hours of music on a disk. It's made by AIWA model #CDC-MP3. Lists for $350. I just noticed that there is a cheaper model for $170, not as many bells and whistles. I think it's pretty cool! http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/smile.gifCheck out http://www.crutchfield.com/ for more info.
The format is still a little silver disk if that's what you're implying http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/wink.gif
I for one can't wait until DVD-RW drives become cheap and plentiful. http://www.xwingalliance.com/forums/biggrin.gif HUNDREDS of hours of MP3s on a single disk!

My brother's friend actually got a data CD of mp3s to play in a regular CD player once. I was blown away. It's the most interesting fluke i've ever seen. The guy's never been able to do it again and I haven't been able to get it to do it either. It's so weird.

I just heard a presentation of the new(ish) DVD-Audio format. Stunning! But you need all new hardware and a set of killer surround speakers to take full advantage of this new format. Plus, now do I really want to upgrade all my favorite albums to the new format (yet again!)? Let's see, I have a few certain albums on LP, cassette, CD, and now I want to get them on DVD? Man I'm so happy I am too young to have bought into 8-Track. No wonder people hate the record companies.

Well, firstly, most of my music is equally spread between CDs and tapes (for the simple reason that I wasn't going to replace 100-some tapes with CDs, especially when many of the tapes are unavailable (i.e., out of "print"). I have a few MP3s and wav files, and I collect soundtrack CDs.

Selections from my music collection:

Spice
Spice World
Spice Girls Forever
Ultimate Edition TPM Soundtrack
Escaflowne: Over the Sky (soundtrack vol. 1)
Escaflowne soundtrack vol. 2
Macross 1998 Singles Collection
Celtic Mysteries
B*Witched
B*Witched: Awake & Breathe
Afro-Celt Sound System vol. 1: Sound Magic
Afro-Celt Sound System vol. 2: RealWorld
Billie
Billie Piper: Walk of Life
Lord of the Dance
Pokémon: 2.B.A. Master
Pokémon the First Movie
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
2000 Today (symphonic)
Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits vol. 4 Defenders of Justice
Blue Planet & The Dream is Alive (from Imax films)
DragonHeart
Batman Beyond
Xena vol. 1
Xena: Lyre, Lyre, Hearts Afire
Princess Mononoke
Merlin
Due South (vols. 1 & 2)
Radio Disney Jams 2
Superman: Lois & Clark
Bicentenial Man
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
5th Element
Wing Commander Prophecy (the soundtrack, of course)
Babylon 5: vol 2. Messages from Earth
Stargate SG-1
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Insurrection
Warriors of Virtue
Sailor Moon: LunaRock
Titan A.E.
Survivor
Interstellar Force Star Wars Remixes
Digimon: the Movie
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
YTV's Big Fun Party Mix
MechWarrior 4 soundtrack (Awesome; orchestra/techno!)

The entire Star Wars trilogy soundtracks (re-mastered editions), and various others.

In fact, just yesterday, I finally found a Gundam Wing CD: Endless Waltz Operation S.

As you can see, my tastes are all over the board.

Now, what do I win?

Sure, you can do that too. I just happen to like the idea of ten hours of music on a single disk that you can later erase and rewrite. If you already have a portable MP3 player then there's no point buying new gear I guess. I don't own either, so I'm stuck converting what MP3s I have to CD-Audio if I want to take 'em with me. My car does have a 6 disk changer tho...

Now if I could only get my customized streaming audio radio station everywhere I go I would be a happy man. It's playing a rare Zappa tune as I type this, and it just got finished playing a old Thelonius Monk song. Now it's playing Primus! Glorious! No ads or inane DJs either. Name one commercial station that can claim that! I love it! The sound is really good too, like really good MP3.
It's LaunchCast from Launch.com in case you're wondering.

D'Oh!
Yeah, I guess I deserved that! Heh heh!
I just happen to REALLY like it, that's all. It's a cool way to waste all this extra bandwidth I'm paying for.
