Handwriting recognition

I have just got myself a Wacom tablet pen, and I was wondering is there any handwriting recogniton software (that i don't have to spend money on) that I could use. Something that allows me to just write into (almost) any program, for example into this text box I'm typing in now. I have had a look but most of the stuff I have found is for a tablet PC (or they want money for it).

Any suggestions?

Not seen any, but let me know if you find any. Or any other cool software that works well with a Wacom tablet. Inkscape is free and has some nice features - as well as soome glaring holes. Alias sketchbook is sweet, but very expensive for what it can do.

I'm not sure my tablet is good enough to pick up handwriting though...

Inkscape isnt handwriting recognition or anything, its an open source version of illustrator. It does a couple of things better than illustrator... and does a very nice job of taking had drawn input in and converting it to nice vectors... but its missing some very basic functionality as well. If they ever add some of the basic stuff it will rock.

I would think that typing is much easier and faster than writing. Considedring the previous sentence only took me around 20 seconds to type, I'm pretty sure writing it would take longer.

20 seconds TiE? Wow. I guess all those stupid typing tutor tests I had to take in elementary and middle school really helped, because now I type at 30~50 words per minute when I'm just casually typing, and I can do 60+ (if not more, I haven't actually measured in a while) when I'm in a hurry.

I wasn't thinking about using it for serious typing (though i am not quick and can't touch type), It was more for the novety value. that is exactly why i am not prepared to spend any money on it.

What I don't understand is why i can't just get the handwriting recognition engine which MS include on with XP tablet edition.

There are some times I can type super fast... I think I just did... meh. I guess it was because I already thought of what I was going to write instead of making it up as I went along. 'Tis was pre-loaded! YAR!

I type at 79 WPM average. North of 100 if no numbers are involved.

I just tested my speed and I get around 50-60 WPM. Meh! :p

I only manage about 65wpm. Oh well.

I think my highest I've gotten is 90ish, but I ended up with a fair amount of mistakes.

What exactly would you use the handwriting recognition software for, jon_hill?

Not a lot. It would be one of those "because I can" things. of course it looks like I can't, not without spending money on it at least... So it dosn't really matter.

A friend of mine's father had a handwriting recognition software on his computer, but that was like 3-4 years ago. I can do 105 WPM. 75 if numbers are involved.

Bah! Never payed attention during typing classes, muscle memory alone is enough for me, I can do about 80 WPM without many mistakes.
