Ugh. Half way through I saw "Durham". I scrolled up, shocked to see that that is the website of my local newspaper. (I live in Raleigh.)

What an awful city Durham is. My first venture involved being lost on I-40 was brought to end by following a personal rule of mine:

"Raleigh good, Durham bad. Let's not end up in Durham."

While this story ended up good, most times, kids get themselves in trouble doing that. You may find it hard to believe, but the bad guys won't really show mercy on kids, they'll hurt them :[

Awesome. :D But it's true that he was was lucky that time. If I were him, I'd have found a way to sneak up and hit the robber on the back of the head with a baseball bat or something. :p

Yet more proof (if any is needed) that most criminals in the US turn to a life of crime because they're just too stupid to hold down jobs or careers.

That isn't entirely accurate, "most" people don't become criminals because they are "stupid", as you call them.
There are plenty of reasons why certain people become criminals.
One example being poor; they have to steal food for survival.
But society label them criminals, I don't.
That is bullsh*t calling them to ''stupid'' to hold down jobs or careers, Mace.:disaprove
Life in the U.S.A isn't fair for everyone to have good careers or jobs that keep your head above the water.
Not everyone receive the so called American dream, Mace.

So... if a poor or unfortunate person stole food to survive instead of seeking out help at a nearby church, homeless shelter, soup kitchen, or wayside ministry it should be considered perfectly acceptable and it keeps them from being a criminal?

Have you ever talked to a person in the homeless community? I volunteer my time at homeless shelters often, and while it is true they are almost always people who fell into unfortunate situations that they had no chance to control, nearly everyone I have asked agree that no one needs to be forced into criminal activity to survive.

A criminal is a criminal. End of story.

Quite frankly, stealing stuff is stupid. It's detrimental to society as a whole, not to mention what it does to the victims. There've been cases of death and near death, such as this one. How can you possibly justify it?

There are homelesss shelters. There are government programs. Turning to crime is just plain selfish, whatever the motive. It's looting, quite frankly. If everyone adopted this attitude that you can loot without producing based on "need", how can you define this? What's to stop someone from thinking their "need" can justify crime at the point of poverty instead of starvation? What if it's at a point of financial stability, even? "Need" is an extremely open term.

One example being poor; they have to steal food for survival.
But society label them criminals, I don't.

I call them criminals. What about the livlihood of the people who are robbed? What if they actually defend their legitimate property, and are killed as a result? Your philosiphy on this would lead to chaos.

The survival of one looter is less valuable than society falling into a state of anarchy.

Oh yes, the kid. He deserves a medal for something like that, although I'd be concerned about his ability to tell fantasy from reality. :)

Well, if you're referring to the kid, give him a break at all of 4 years of age. They still usuually believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause and the tooth fairy at that point. I'd be willing to wager that most criminals in the US are there b/c they're just to shiftless to find a legitimate source of income. Of course, then there are the idiots who don't disguise themselves when robbing businesses with cameras in them.......if you're going to steal, at least don't telegraph your identity.

@Windu6--You're right on the one hand that people who steal aren't stupid, at least as far as many crooks have average to high IQs. However, poverty is no excuse for reasons already touched upon by ED.

The government don't give a f**k about poor people, homeless shelters can't shelter everbody.
And homeless shelters turn away some(race, looks and etc.) poor people.
Well until you become poor as dirt and hanging by your ass, then we will see what is your opinion on selfishness, Devon.
Poverty won't be solve if we continue to have currency.
As long as any society have a dependency on currency, there will always be poverty.
The rich will become richer and the poor will become ever poorer.

The survival of one looter is less valuable than society falling into a state of anarchy.
Some people in society see poor people as nothing and a embarrassment to the society so their life is less valuable like you have just said it, Devon.
I don't agree with this bullsh*t.

It's not the governments job to care for the poor people but thats beside the point. Homeless shelters are for the most part not run by the government.

The government don't give a f**k about poor people, homeless shelters can't shelter everbody. Most of this is true. The goverment does have some
programs to try and help people. My father was on wealthfare for a time do
to losing his job. But I admit it only helped for so long.
They do give alittle help but not enough help which probally most people agree on.
I hope that is. I would wish that the goverment did help more but if they did
that the goverment would go bankrupt.

Poverty won't be solve if we continue to have currency.
Yes this does hold some truth here. We have had currency for thousands of years.
But what would we go to if we didnt have currency? Answer=Farming.
Ah the good ole life on a farm. Working tirelessly on the fields to support
you and your family. If we got rid of Currency there would be no star wars, video games etc. Because every1 would be busy working on farms or by other means
to survive.

The rich will become richer and the poor will become ever poorer.
Sadly this is true and has been like this forever it seems. Yes if we put all
are resources to end poverty it would be great but sadly that probally wont
happen. Alot of people just care for there own wellbeing which is alright
I guess but it wouldnt hurt to show kindness to people less fortunate.

Poverty will probally continue to the end of the earth ok not to think that far ahead
but probally is true.

Ok now on the topic of this thread. That is something I gotta say. That kid has
guts but probally the kid didnt know the chances that he couldve been seriously
injured or even killed since he is only 4. Little kids are like that until they get hurt etc.
Councelors are going totally whacko over a 4 year kid -.- like kids dont need to know all the crap that goes on at that age seriously let him have his fantasies until he is
old enough to undestand all of this.

You've seen a homeless shelter that turns people away because of their race?

Show me one, because I've never come across something like that.

The point is, your argument states that people who are poor should be allowed to steal, and that it should be acceptable, which is just... plain.... idiocy, in my opinion.

No one would have any drive or motive to earn money, and as people here previously stated, it would be mass chaos.

heh, that was sweet. although technically he wasn't a mighty morphin power ranger, but that kid showed true bravery. @windu6: What makes you think that I don't have personal experience with poverty and criminality? What makes you think I haven't known enough criminals over the years to make that kind of judgement? I have been poor myself. I never resorted to shoving a gun under a 5 year-old's nose to get by. Save your sympathies for more deserving people than thieves who would threaten small children.

QFT.

I know that if you're homeless, you can get a job, get money, and get somewhere in life. I've seen it happen at my friends workplace (Popa Johns). They hired a homeless man, the people that worked there helped him out by letting him take showers at their place, sometimes even stay with them, and he could get free food at Popa Johns. Now guess what. He stuck with that job for 5 months, and is the asistant manager, and has even managed to get his own apartment.

So don't give me any of this they steal because they need it bulls***.
