View Full Version : Why so serious?

Instead of posting in the old "I believe in Harvey Dent" thread I decided to make a new one.

So, the trailer (http://www.atasteforthetheatrical.com/deathtrap/default.htm) for The Dark Knight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_%28film%29) came online today.

First off, what do you think? I'm overly hyped already.

I just hope they make the story good and not try to cram too many villains in one picture. I think they succeeded in transforming the Joker into the 21st century. I'm glad they didn't take the same approach that Burton did in the first Batman movie. I like that the Joker is portrayed as this evil psychopath instead of just a criminal with clown make-up who likes to play small pranks on people.

I was going to make a thread on this right now, with the exact same link and title. :xp:

Trailer is most awesome one I've seen since 300, and I'm all hyped up for The Joker. Hell, I doubt if anyone will even be looking at Batman when The Joker is up on screen. :D

Heath Ledger looks awesome and the new Joker is an interesting look. He doesn't have the excessive smiling and joke-cracking, though. He's a lot more serious - something like a psychopath terrorist-gangster hybrid. But ****, he's awesome nevertheless.

I wonder who all those people in black were. The ones who scatter about midway through the trailer.

All I'm saying is, I'm digging Joker's getup. That vest/tie combo is so awesome. :D It's like, sophisticated psycho.

it looks good but i hope the main focus of the movie is still on Batman/Bruce. the trailer seemed to focus too much on Joker, but that was prolly to show all the doubters about Heath Ledger's ability to pull off the role.

I'll be honest, I didn't thought he was this good! I'm really hyped for this movie!!!

Yeah, he's the joker. The Joker is a crazy **** loon who doesn't crack jokes to be funny, he just has a twisted sense of humor that enjoys the idea of death and suffering for him to have a laugh.

zOMG the hype and the thrill of the trailer was completely lost on me. :( I was more interested in the trailers for Jumper, Cloverfield, 10,000 B.C., and Vantage Point. When the Batman trailer came on, I was like "oh another a Batman movie is being made with the Joker and they're making it serious this time." That was about as much as it registered with me.

I take it that I am Legend sucks then...?I did not think it sucked. It thought it was quite engrossing. Will Smith did a great job. The dog did an excellent job. I'd say it dropped off a bit at the end, but the movie was worth my price of a matinée admission.

This is probably the movie I'm looking forward to most. Begins is one of my favorite movies. When I went to see I Am Legend the IMAX had just sold out as I was buying my ticket so I didn't get to see the prologue that they showed in there. Can't wait!

I certainly can't wait for The Dark Knight. I've been waiting to see it even since they announced it.

No, he is right, you do see the transformation into Two-Face, in fact, it's pretty obvious if you look at the freeze frame right there:

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/7445/snapshot20080504044320xs6.jpg

This is right after the shot of acid falling to the floor, he appears to be in great pain and half of his face is touching the oily-like substance.

and

Look closely, see? You can see the fringe of the bluish tint of the burnt section of his face (it actually looks like they are staying true to the comic books by going with blue).

Also:

As far as I know, that's not acid. It's alcohol or gasoline spilled on him by mafia members. The actual scarring takes place in a courthouse when a maffia boss named Maroni (not sure if this is his name or not) tosses acid on him.
Almost looks like Scarecrow is in the car... yes/no? What do you think?
It's been confirmed that Scarecrow is in the movie, The Joker may possibly kill him.

Even though this trailer was awesome, I'm sort of unsure about Two-Face. I think Ledger's Joker is strong enough to take the entire movie - a side villain wouldn't be too bad, but Harvey Dent being a politician and Two-Face seems a little two strong. I hope they balance it all out and the Scarecrow only makes a cameo and nothing more!

Man, can't wait for this.

Ahoy.

There's a new Two Face clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HgUjGg6Lyk) out, I recommend not to watch it if you don't like spoilers. You've been warned.

I like the way The Dark Knight feels like a thriller and not a comic book movie, though I like the "Sin City" style too, I feel it wouldn't fit in the Batman movies that well. They've given Two Face a more realistic interpretation, he's probably going to look really creepy.

I went through a Wendy's drive thru before the movie and handed him my credit card along with a joker card and said "here's my card"

They took pictures of me drinking sweet tea in makeup. :D

I went today at 1:00 and the theater had plenty of open seats... I was shocked, but then again I didn't see it in a very popular theater.

It was...ahhhhh.

see, I'm a BIG villain buff. I love villains in movies and videogames and I mean heroes are fine but there's something about a good villain that really gets me. Heath Ledger BECAME the Joker, he mastered that character. Even thinking of the original Batman movie with Jack Nicholson is putrid, that's how legendary TDK was.

Not to give anything away, but I'm kinda bummin about the ending. I hope there's a sequel, though I can't really see how there'll be one, what with how TDK ended. oh, and my FAVORITE thing about this movie is that the Joker doesn't die. That really would've hurt my opinion of the movie, and the fact that they just arrested him... perfect.

They are.

Joker will hopefully not be in any more movies. I love him, but he's Heath's. I don't think Nolan is dumb enough to let someone take Heath's last role. At any rate, the movie ended how it had to end. Gordon's monologue was kinda long though. And I'm very sad that Two Face died, though I suppose it had to happen.

Yeah I thought as much...
The film was ok, what was really amazing was Ledger's acting. That was perfect but everthing else was just regular... Wasn't great if in my opinion...
That time with the two boats, that was pathetic... I don't know why they keep doing those kind of things in movies. Trying to show that people wouldn't do those things. THAT is the lie, if it was in the real world BOTH boats would have exploded cuz the people would get the detonator.

IG-64
07-19-2008, 10:58 AM
Saw it yesterday. I thought it was great, I liked a lot of it. It actually had things happening other than mindless comic book movie action, but it still had some of that, which is good too. :p

I probably got a bit of a different experience from the movie from anyone else here, because I never saw the first one, but here's a few noteworthy things (I'm just gonna put the whole thing in spoiler tags for safety):

The Joker. I didn't think I'd like the Joker that much, I thought it was going to be an overly-goth and dark version, but what I got was just an awesome version of the Joker. Heath Ledger really did an amazing job, which made me sad at the end because the first thing I thought was how I would have wanted to see more of him in the next movie. What also struck me was how not like Heath Ledger it was, he was so into the character I just about forgot it was him for awhile.

I also liked Two Face, and I wished the character hadn't died because I wanted to see more of him too. They managed to give him so many of his cartoony features yet kept it so realistic, and it looked really good. The coin thing was great too.

Now for things that were new to me because I hadn't seen Batman Begins:

Like Batman, for instance. I have to say this is probably the best film-version of batman I've ever seen, which is really not saying much. I still wasn't all that impressed, to be honest. He didn't have a whole lot of character depth and for the most part he was just kind of there. He didn't seem all that troubled and was a bit more of a billionaire jet-setter than I thought Bruce Wayne should be. The laryngitis thing bothered me at first too, but I guess it does make more sense that way. I'll have to see Batman Begins before I come to any conclusions.

What I did like were Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox and Michael Caine as Alfred, they were awesome.

Over anything else, it was all-in-all a great movie.

That time with the two boats, that was pathetic... I don't know why they keep doing those kind of things in movies. Trying to show that people wouldn't do those things. THAT is the lie, if it was in the real world BOTH boats would have exploded cuz the people would get the detonator.

I'm not saying I liked that part either, it was a really transparent moral dilemma, and it seemed rather forced, but I was actually quite impressed with the way they handled it. I don't wanna have a debate with you right here in the thread, but I'll have to respectfully disagree with you. The deliberations (with the voting and all of that) and the comments that people were making, as well as the fact that no one was quite bad enough to blow up the other boat was a pretty accurate reflection of what would happen in my opinion.

Lorden Darkblade
07-19-2008, 11:44 AM
Ahh IG I seriously doubt that would happen in the real world, but I too respect your opinion :)
I'm impressed you went to see this one without watching Batman Begins first though.

hmm...
I think Two Face was a epic-ly massive dick. Gee lemme get this straight, the idea where it's better to kill the guy who gave your girlfriend to the bad guy, kill his family and kids. Yet let the guy who has killed dozens of people viciously, tried to kill you, and was the one who killed his girlfriend... then let him go because of a coin flip. Retard McSpacky-Pants is more like it.

Also, his left eye would have been totally blood red by the end of the day.

Also, spoiler, here is the ending bit:

Yeah, IG, definitely watch the first one - that will give INTENSE depth to Batman/Bruce Wayne. They didn't really need to do it again for this one.

Overall, one of the best Batman movies ever. This is the Joker I was looking for, the true socio-pathic psychotic with the most deranged, sadistic twisted sense of humor and self-amusement.

I loved his magic trick. It elicited alot of gasps from the audience. I told my buddy next to me, "Dude, that was eraser first." He totally cringed.

I just got back from the movie. This is coming from someone who hasn't seen Batman Begins either, But it's on FX tomarrow night, and I will definatly make note to watch it.... I'm don't think there are any spoilers, because it's my opinions, so just tell me if you think I should edit in some tags...

1. THAT IS THE GREATEST MOVIE IN EXISTANCE, I DON'T CARE HOW MANY YOU'VE SEEN, OR HOW MANY OSCARS IT WON. CAPS LOCK FOR EMPHASIS, I SWEAR TO GOD.
2. I have one problem though.... In my opinion, everyone outacted Christian Bale. Was it like that in the first one? Or am I just biased because everytime I see him, I see either Patrick Bateman or Demetrius?

each actor who has played batman makes the character different

adam west was the zaney 60's version

keaton was obviouly the psychotic batman, just think of the first movie when he grabs the fire poker and yells "ya wanna get nuts, come on lets get nuts"

kilmer was obviously the emo gay batman

and i refuse to speak of the bat nippled abomination known as clooney

bale simply plays the realistic batman

Yeah, but I mean everyone else did REALLY GOOD. I was blown away by Aaron Eckhart, I was blown away by Heath Ledger, I was blown away by Gary Oldman, I was blown away by Maggic Gyllenhaal (And she's not even my favorite Gyllenhaal...) heck, I was even impressed by Michael Caine and Morgan Freedman. But Christian Bale, the main character of the film? Meh.

he actually played wayne quite well in comparrison to some of the comics, when it all comes down to it, its just a matter of opinion, i think he portrayed batman as the batman from the hush comics, but thats just my personal favorite

deffinately wasnt like the 50's batman

Deep Raspy voice was way too noticeable to me, just kinda cringed whenever he spoke in Batman garb. Also, I'd think that the Joker may as well be the main character... hey, I just realized, did the name "The Joker" ever get used in the movie? Hmm... probably, but I don't remember.

Edit:
Here is a good source of Batman movie knowledge in entertaining video format made by the Angry Video Game Nerd himself, James Rolfe.

I was hoping to see more Christian Bale in the movie, but I still think the scenes he was in still were good. I didn't have a problem was his acting at all really and the raspy voice was fine, just like in Batman Begins. He has to disguise his voice in some way.

I found pretty much as of the acting superb in TDK. The only questionable part I thought was when you first see Harvey Dent prosecuting the guy, and when he punched him. But really, that wasn't much.

Right now, The Dark Knight is rated 9.7/10 on IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/) and is ranked #1 on the top 250. And honestly, I'd agree with it right now since, well, I work at a movie theatre, and EVERYTHING is about TDK. :p

You forgot Kevin Conroy, who I can only assume is actually Batman.

Ok, that was a voice, but still. That's the Batman I know.

i was discussing the live action actors, theres no doubt that Kevin Conroy does an amazing job in all the animated series

but in all honesty, he's simply the voice

and i also left out Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery if you want to get technical about the actors

Was I the only one that didn't liked Two Faces make-up or special effect?
I thought it was so lame...

I saw it the other day. I was amazed at Heath's performance. It was his movie - no one else even came close. Also, the film was so much better than Batman Begins it's not even funny. I was "meh" with BB, but this? Certainly the best action movie of the year, and the best superhero movie there is likely ever to be.

Goddamn best movie I've seen in a while.

I'd go wait in line 2 hours AGAIN to see it.

Alright, one more post here. I saw, for the first time, Batman Begins today, and that makes me like TDK even more to be honest. Before I felt like "WTF Why is Christian Bale Batman?" But NOW I get it, it so much better to have seen BB, cause I understand it more. Although I have a major problem with them putting that sack over Cillian Murphy's pretty eyes....

Mike, you look like you're from some japanese emo band or something. :P

The movie was better than I expected (I tend not to believe the hype), and except for a few ridiculous gadgets and scenes (it's a comic-book movie after all), it really did a great job at portraying Batman from a very dark perspective. It still doesn't hold a candle to Adam West though, that man is bad to the bone.

I just saw it last night.

I was incredibly impressed by Heath Ledger, but it felt like he really did steal the show away from Batman and Harvey. The only thing I disliked was the fact that Maggie Gyllenhaal played Rachel, I just can't get over the fact that she looks exactly like a pidgeon.
