While I know its not Scumm related I figured it was better here than elsewhere.

Ive been looking at the mi2 slideshow demo available here
http://www.scummbar.com//resources/downloads/demos/MI2-SHOW.EXE

And Ive been able to determine that while its just images
these images are stored inside the executable data,
through a hex editor I think ive been able to see that the images are BMP
I figure this because Ive looked at BMP format documents and the header seems similar

However I'd like to be able to extract these images, I know there available online at some site, but there screenshots not original images
It seems pointless but Its more of a learning curve for me than any real interest in the demo and its pictures.

Im using a hex editor to extract what I think is the BMP header and the data that follows it, but im not having any luck in getting this to be recognised as a BMP image when I try to open the file in a viewer.

If anyone could spare a few minutes to give me some hints and tips I would be very greatful

The BMP header can be found with a text search for 'PBM BMHD'

I know this may seem a little silly but its a Lucasarts community and this is a Lucasarts release so maybe someone can help me out

Thank you very much
Robert

They are old-style Amiga iff ILBPM images. You can view these using Paint Shop Pro (and probably most other image apps). Remember that the format is big endian when extracting :)

Just for anyone thats interested,

http://gracesdisposal.bpweb.net/MI2SLIDESHOW/
The complete extracted image set in IFF format, They can be converted to JPG with various pieces of software, also included is the original executable, an executable with no image data(the 'engine' for this demo) and a few notes on the process

Many thanks to bgbennyboy for showing me the way.
I never intended this to be of any use to me or anybody else, rather just to get me used to using a hex editor properly, but if anybody wants to make use of the images then feel free

Rob

Nice one. Its always good to see someone new doing some SCUMM hacking.

Just wondering, whats the chances that these shots were created on the Amiga?
possibly in a development version demo. Its interesting as I think I see Herman Toothrot in the cell in the third picture.

Its certainly possible, especially since we know that LEC used Deluxe Paint for at least some of the art on MI (hence the guy.brush name theory). The fact that the images are ILBPM (introduced and used in DPaint) makes it likely that DPaint was used.

According to Wikipedia though, there was a pc version of Deluxe Paint - so they could have used that.

Sadly, I think it must have been the PC version they used. The rolling demo was presumably produced sometime around 1991 in 256 colours. Unless my memory is broken, the first Amiga capable of displaying 256 colours wasn't released until late in 1992, and the version of Deluxe Paint to support it must have followed some time later.

Geek out!

Retro-geekery! You're right of course, I had it in my head that this was an MI1 slideshow demo for some reason.
