Request: I have become interested in modding and Skinning. But for me to start I need some software to do so. So if anyone can recommend some software it would be greatly appreciated.

Go for Photoshop CS3 for texturing (it's the most used software out there) so you can learn to use it (it's a very usefull skill to have, even if you're a programmer). For modeling i went myself for GMAX to start, i think it's more simple than 3Dstudio MAX (but you might go for that too, good 3d modeling artists with 3dstudio proficiency have jobs everywhere) and just follow the tutorials to find the tools specific for KotOR (KotOR tool, for example). With all this you'll do just fine.
Of course, you can learn this stuff just for fun, but it's always nice to work with things that actually give you some fun :D
