View Full Version : Early iPod Touch Adopters Screwed
Well for anyone who has the iPod touch we're getting screwed. Apple today announced that they will add Mail, Maps, Stocks, Notes and Weather to the touch, apps that were on the iPhone from the start. But instead of giving us these in a free firmware update, they are charging current owners $20 to get these apps, while new owners get them for free. This is complete bull****.
I've sent Apple my thoughts regarding this and I hope all touch owners and even iPod owners in general will tell Apple what they think of this.

Someone will find a way to put Linux or Android on it soon enough.

Pfft, you shelled out $250-$350 for that silly thing, what's another $20? :xp:

Pfft, you shelled out $250-$350 for that silly thing, what's another $20? :xp:I didn't shell out a damn thing for it.
Moel on the other hand >_>
Well I got a nano for xmas so I returned it and paid the $100 difference.
Its not the price, its the principle. These are apps that should have been on there in the first place, and now we're getting screwed because we got it early instead of now.

They'll counter-sue with "Patience is a virtue".

Early adopters are screwed every day, sad to say :(.
Take the Xbox 360:
Early versions have the Red Ring of Death
Was 400 USD for the premium version
No Included games, limited warranty
Christmas '07 adopters have
Supposedly fixed RROD Boxes
3 year warranties against hardware failures
2 Free Games, huge library.
50 dollar price drop.

Warranty applies to all consoles now.
And there are all sorts of consoles guilty of price drops and bundles over time.

This is just so typical of Apple.
But this is different than consoles getting price drops and bundles. Software and firmware updates should be free. These apps have been on the iPhone from the start. They're sending the message that you shouldn't buy Apple products early.
Also From Apple's Q-10 filing...
In March 2007, the Company began shipping Apple TV and expects to begin shipping the iPhone in late June 2007. For Apple TV and the iPhone, the Company plans to provide future unspecified features and additional software products free of charge to customers. Accordingly, the sale of the Apple TV and the iPhone handset are accounted for under subscription accounting in accordance with Statement of Position ("SOP") No. 97-2. As such, the Company defers the associated revenue and cost of goods sold at the time of sale, which will then be recognized on a straight-line basis over the currently estimated 24 month economic life of these products. Costs incurred by the Company for engineering, sales, and marketing will continue to be expensed as incurred.

That reminds me. When the Zune 2.0 came out, they gave the firmware update free to the older owners. So they run the same internally, wireless syncing and everything.
