Desert Island Discs is very famous here in the UK. I thought I would do a Swampie version. :)

Here is an extract from the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Island_Discs):

Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme. It was first broadcast on January 29, 1942 and is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest-running music programme in the history of radio. [1] Guests are invited to imagine themselves castaways on a desert island, and to choose eight pieces of music to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life. Aside from music, they are permitted one book, excluding the Bible or other religious work and the complete works of Shakespeare, which are already present on the island to force more original choices. They also choose one luxury which must be inanimate and of no survival value, though large supplies of champagne seem to be allowed.

A whole host of very famous people have been on the show, and you can read what they chose here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desertislanddiscs.shtml).

So you get the premise. 8 pieces of music, 1 book and 1 luxury item.

This was a hell of a lot harder than I thought it would be. After shortlisting 40 songs, I finally broke it down to this.

Book: Slaughterhouse 5- Vonnegut

Luxury Item - Acoustic Guitar

I guess Slaughterhouse 5 would help when you want to muster enough hate of the world to help drown yourself underneath the waves once you tire of the monotony of the desert island. It's a great book, but not exactly something I would take to uplift my spirits. As for the acoustic guitar, I thought of the same thing too, but then I realized that strings break and then so would my heart. Also, you're probably the only other person in the world besides me who's both heard of and likes Hey Hey What Can I Do. It's the bass part that does it for me.

Anyway:

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
Led Zeppelin - Bron Yr Aur
Neutral Milk Hotel - Communist Daughter
Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry
Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Sly and the Family Stone - Africa Talks to You (The Asphalt Jungle)
Radiohead - Paranoid Android

Book: Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(the entire series, mind you, and yes it does come within a single volume).

Luxury Item - Acoustic guitar. Yeah, I know, but this is on the proviso I have a virtually endless supply of strings and picks.

Wait until it's the year 2052 and you've basically worn through the entire fret board after playing for seven hours a day for 44 years. But hey, when the neck does snap in half you'll be like Yngwie Malmsteen, only three times faster and more accurate, and you'll be able to trill four strings at a time.

By 2052 I'll be 62 years old. I'll probably wither away from malnutrition before my guitar's fretboard does.

Edit - Do sex slaves count as luxury items? They're technically a commodity within certain parts of the world.

Book: Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(the entire series, mind you, and yes it does come within a single volume).

That was going to be my choice being my favourite book of all time, but I've read the series so many times now that I think I would eventually get bored of it on a desert island.

And no Ty, sex slaves don't count lol. Your luxury item must be inanimate. ;)

Supreme choice! :)

This is going to be difficult to decide, as I listen to a lot of different music. I currently have more than 21000 songs in my library, and it expands every week with promos and such (I'm a reviewer), so don't consider this list permanent. :xp:

Songs:
Forgotten Tomb - Alone

Agalloch - You Were But A Ghost In My Arms
The Sisters Of Mercy - We Are The Same, Susanne
Темнозорь – As the Autumn Razors Sing Above My Veins
Primordial - The Coffin Ships
Bathory - One Rode To Asa Bay
Silencer - Sterile Nails And Thunderbowels
Joy Division - Atmosphere
Drudkh – When the Flame Turns to Ashes

I personally find Pie's selection the best so far, mainly because of Bathory, The Silmarillion (an excellent choice, because it's really the sort of book you can only read on a desert island) and Porn.

no we're not favour-currying

The Silmarillion (an excellent choice, because it's really the sort of book you can only read on a desert island)

What do you mean by that? I read it in three weeks at home when I was 12. And I don't think I lived on a desert island back then :p

Oh my goodness Slayne, you basically described half of what I've been listening to recently...

Iron Maiden, Metallica, Manowar, and Enya.

All great bands. Not really my favorite, but definitely stuff I've been into recently.

Given that this island seems to have copious amounts champagne, then yeah...you can imagine me being roaring drunk and singing quite loud and badly "High and mighty, alone we are kings..."

And given my seeming intolerance to any form of alcohol produced from a grape, then I'd quite promptly be throwing up soon after, and not remembering a single thing the next morning... :¬:

You know, you could almost be my little brother...similar avatar, similar taste in music, your sig even rings close to my own particular sense of humour... :dozey:

I've edited my first post with Planet Rock and Singin' In The Rain by Mint Royale. Singin' In The Rain was recently brought back into the public eye by Britains Got Talent by being the song the winning act used to dance to, but was first used in a VW commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs_T_cEoX6I) a few years ago. I have always watched this video from time to time as I love it so much, but it kinda didn't occur to me to list it as one of my favourite songs, so now I'm correcting the error. :)

Planet Rock has always been my favourite breakdancing tune. I know this will be hard for some of you to believe, but back in the 80's I was actually part of a breakdancing crew. ^^

I notice a few of you put 10 songs instead of 8, so I've made mine 10 too. :p It will be interesting to come back to this thread a year from now and see if our favourite songs have changed at all.
