onto this:

but I was wondering how I can get rid of the white around the symbol when I add it to the texture, I tried blending and it didnt work and if I set transperency it fades the symbol itself. Does anybody know how to do this?

You can try that.

Here's how I would do it in Photopaint. Photoshop probably has a similar function:
Mask-Select All
Use a "magic wand" in "subtract from mask" mode.
Click on the white area.
It should isolate the black pattern from the background, and the black pattern should be a separate object if you cut-paste it.
Cut or copy the black object, paste it into the armor .tga, then re-size it.
Edit: Here's one I converted to .psd

I'll try to figure it out. In the mean time, here's a czerka logo that has been divided into two halves. Some parts of the armor mirror the symbol, so this may come in handy.
