A few of you may already be participating, or have heard of the folding@home project at Stanford University. (http://folding.stanford.edu/)

Folding@home is a distributed computing project. Very basically, it uses some of your CPUs processing power and combined with many other pcs doing the same thing, emulates a "supercomputer" that can be tasked with complex computational models. In this instance, the processing power is going towards understanding protein folding to understand disease proceses, and hence work towards a cure for them.

We have now created our very own team, so if you would like to contribute, please feel free to join teamLFN :) The software allows you to monitor how much work units you(and your team) have contributed to. Many organisations, forum and tech sites have teams up and running and have contributed a great amount of processing power for this wonderful cause.

THE SCIENCE
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

How to setup >>>

1. Select folding client for your OS from the F@H download page, which you can get to from HERE (http://folding.stanford.edu/)

There is a text only application, as well as a graphical client, which gives you a pretty picture and stats as to what you and your team are up to.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/foldingpic.jpg

Once you have download and run the proggie it will bring up the config screen. Enter your desired username and if you want to join teamLFN, enter
140370 as the team number. Thats it. The default settings should be sufficient for most people, but if you are a more advanced/savvy user, you can tweak these in config settngs.

You will see the folding tray icon appear in your system tray, which allows you to control or totally switch off

As a general rule, default settings will utilise your CPU(s) 50%. You can still do most computing tasks without any performance issues. Of course, if you want to do some gaming or higher end media stuff, best switch it off :)

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/foldinglfnsetu.jpg

If you have any further questions about setup please post them here :)

the folding graphical client allows you to add a team logo. Im hoping someone clever will knock together a snazzy teamLFN folding logo we can put up there.
nb. FAH recommends logo should be roughly 4 times length compared to height. eg. 160x40 pixels

Join us.... It is your des....tiny! :p

great stuff Charr :)

Remember, if you want to clock back the amount of CPU usage folding has access to, you can tweak this config. Ive found Ive only needed to pause it when playing a high end game(like crysis or COD4) at high settings. Other than that, I barely notice its there :)

For advanced users, particularly those with snazzy GPUs, check out the folding variants that utilise GPU Instead! (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther) Ive seen some of the newer nvidia CUDA cards do astounding things with F@H.

I have a question Astro, how long do you have to do it for?

I'll most likely join after you answer that. :)

I have a question Astro, how long do you have to do it for?

I'll most likely join after you answer that. :)

the easiest answer to that is "only for as long as you want to!" The display pic will tell you what you/your team has achieved on the current "work unit" they are assigned, and an estimation of how long to go until it is finished.

as I type this we are almost halfway through our very first work unit. The system tries to keep teams on particular work units allowing them to pick up after drop offs, but there is some eventual timeout that occurs if all contributors disappear for a prolonged amount of time.

I hope that sufficiently answers your query Marius, as a certain sith lord in TESB said , " we would be honoured, if you would join us..." ;)

Can we keep a list/log of everyone who joins and such?

Perhaps ask teekay to do some vb tweaking?

FaH currently give nVidia folders more points than Ati though, probably cause it's brand new, just FYI ;)

Here's a first go at a logo for our team:

mtfbwya I saw that but unfortunately my 7800 GTX isn't supported by CUDA so I'm running the regular CPU client. I'll be asking for some advice on purchasing a new 4850 pretty soon though. :D

Just a quick draft of a possible logo (I like yours Neg. Sun :) )

320x80, .png, 48kb:

If anyone would like to muck around with this to make it better (mine's quick and dirty), I've uploaded a collection of files/fonts here: (686kb)

http://www.jumpstationz.com/teamlfn/Team-LFN_files.rar

Has the layered Master logo file, the Episode 1 font, and a layered master file of just the LA guy. No fancy photoshop filters used, so anyone with PS should be able to open it no problem (install the font first). ;)

Social Groups display membership automatically and would be fully appropriate for TeamLFN Folding@Home. Unfortunately TeamLFN's leader is somewhat averse to the new-fangled technology of the forum, so perhaps another team member could create the group?

just some more setup related info for those that may not wander towards the group area

* * *

The standard client has been updated to version 6.2. Same download link as above

GPU clients:
some great work has been done to enable folding functionality using your GPU(graphics processing unit)

ATI and nvidia cards are supported. Those with nvidia 8xxx series and higher are particularly encouraged to have a go.

Setup for nvidia cards.
1. You must download the CUDA enabled graphics drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html)... (nb. this link is still OK, though the driver sets are the same as nvidias main driver sets which now incorporate CUDA as standard)
2. Install nvidia graphic drivers as per usual procedure(ie. uninstalling previous version>restart>install>restart
3. Download the GPU client here >> http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

unless you are happy to play in dos boxes, download the GUI enabled system tray client(as opposed to the console client)

Setup config same as standard client(first post) > ie. your username and 140370 which is the LFN team number. Leave everything else on default unless you are an advanced user.

Those with ATI cards, read the FAQ (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-ATI2) setup is similar :)

Performance using your GPU is *MUCH* quicker than using your CPU. I have a dual core 3.0GHz CPU and it generally takes me 1 day to get through 1000 frames. Using the GPU client with my 8800GTS, I knock off 25000 frames in under an hour(whilst still doing other stuff on the pc). I havent let it run too long yet undisturbed, which it will be doing this week)

Using the GPU client taxes your CPU minimally.

If you are super keen, you can run multiple clients, for your GPU and each core of your CPU. (which explains how some people with higher end kit get 10-20,000+ points per day!) Points are actually calculated according to your systems performance compared to their 'benchmark' system which is a P4 2.4GHZ (IIRC)

Here's what the pretty nvidia clients display looks like, ATIs is similar. Though its not recommended you have this display on too much, as it chews up resurces. Good for screengrabs, geekbragging, or trying to impress someone sufficiently to joining the folding program :)

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/NvCUDAfold.jpg

Please post here if you need any further SETUP assistance. If you are up and running, feel free to join the social group mini-forum (http://www.lucasforums.com/group.php?groupid=43&gmid=1330#gmessage1330) we have created for folding participants ;)

The F@H thread in AHTO is stickified for now ;)

Since this project is network wide, and open to all LFN members, I see no harm in advertising it there. Besides, AHTO may garner some additional eyes that typically avoid Tech Forums until there's a 'puter prob

Messing around again ;)

320x80, .gif, 17kb

http://www.lucasforums.com/picture.php?albumid=159&pictureid=1387

Has more background filler more apropos to F@H. Also, a new collection of master files.. this time with layered .psd's AND .tiff's (see if you can open those Neg. Sun )

http://www.jumpstationz.com/teamlfn/Team-LFN_files.rar

You can also click here for individual files index (rather than the entire .rar compilation)

http://www.jumpstationz.com/teamlfn/

Since it has to be .gif format (ick) I lost the transparency since dithering and diffusion just doesn't do justice (http://www.jumpstationz.com/teamlfn/TeamLFN.gif). We'd have to design with no shadows and more or less straight lines to get a half-decent transparency. :indif:

Feel free to tinker to make it better :D

I've joined :) It's actually a very good project IMO, and I didn't even know about it until astro made Team LFN.

Astro or som1 else - is it just as simple as setting it up and lettin it run?
Or is there a lot more to it?
Soz i dont understand it loads.

My mum is part of breast cancer support - so she was pleased when she found out you made this team - and that i joined.

Great stuff Chainz - I recommend a dark shade of blue - but thats just coz i like light blue :P

Great to have you on board Taak :)

Yes, if you arent happy to play in dos boxes I recommend the standard graphical client.

It has a little icon that sits in your system tray, which you can right click to configure, check stats or close if you want to get your game on :)

It is important for us to emphasise that please have it on only as much as you feel happy to do so.

... And yes, it is one of the few things that parents are pleased or interested to hear about when you mention computer related stuff to them :)

Its unlikely we'd get that many onboard

Id prefer 10 of us running GPU clients :p Knock off just as many WUs as 100 CPUs

Well, we can add at least one more to the list ;)

I'm still not through installing all of my progz, but I seem to have the system nice and stable enough I feel confident to kickstart this puppy :xp:

I just now started the gpu client (about 3 minutes ago) and have logged 2,750/25000 frames.

So just for giggles, my current stats are:

score :2039
WU: 12

So we can measure, somewhat, what a gtx280 logs based on the time stamp of this post / compared to F@H stat updates / via my next post (when I wake up). I'll keep everyone in the loop :)

EDIT: - 4:55am
k..after waking up and checking the progress.. seems F@H hasn't updated the units yet. However I've checked the log and it seems I've finished 5 complete 25,000 frame WU's (no idea on points yet). Average time is apx. 1-1/2 hours per unit per the log.

I'm currently on frame 12,250/25,000 of the 6th unit as I type ;)

If you're really bored, here's the log file of progress:

EDIT2: - 7:00 pm est.

Roughly 24hrs later and the results are

OLD -> NEW (difference)
score : 2039 -> 7799 (5760)
WU: 12 -> 24 (12)

Not too shabby for a single GPU. After some more system conditioning, I'll look at adding an SMP client as well :D

ah yes, protein folding.
ive heard of this before: they form parts for fully working complex cell machines that carry out many tasks within a cell. dna(which i think scientists say is the most efficient thing for information storage in the known universe) is read and building info is copied into a special strand which is taken by cell machines to a cell "manufacturing plant"

How's it hangin Jesus!! [/always wanted to say that!!]

For a lappie, all I would suggest is have the standard client running away in the background when you are on doing lightweght stuff like surfing, documents etc.

For any other rig, I would say 'always on is ok' but for something packed tight like a laptop, I know from personal experience what prolonged use/overheating do. I have a tablet pc, I treat it with the same caution!

Upload/download size isnt large if you are running standard client and havent configured the client to go far larger/advanced projects.

yeah. they call it a laptop... but i'm pretty sure the manual says *not* to put it on your lap... seriously, if you did, you'd end up with baked thighs. (which would be good if it was chicken... but its yours, and it hurts!) how many mb is a standard work upload? (i have a usage cap to think about... but im thinking it wont be too bad. :shads2: )

Regarding size of downloads: using the SMP client with the "big" flag set to true, we're talking the order of about 4-5Mb per WU which take about 1.5 days for me to complete. So not much bandwidth required in that regard.

major graphics changes. Because my album was filling up, I have a created a new album strictly for f@h images. In turn, this will change the url locations for the images...

Please update your sig images to point to the correct version(s).
I've made it real easy with copy-n-paste code. I have also addressed the issue of transparency failure in case anyone is having problems. :D

As long as you enter the right team number. Theres no cross console stats restrictions that Im aware of :D

I saw a presentation Mr Pande gave re the GPUclient and CUDA: basically this is the speed hierachy(IIRC):

CUDA GPU> SMP(flagged)/PS3> ATI/Non CUDA GPU> SMP(unflagged)> Standard Client(multicore>single core)

This is the SMP client with active -smp flag that really thrashes the hell out of all your CPUs, and where the WU rate for this and the PS3 are comparable.

And Astro, that was complete gibberish to me lol, but just for future reference, the PS3 completed 1 WU in around 6 hours.

Edit: I went to install the cuda drivers and it said it's an older version than the drivers I have already, so I've left my drivers how they are and I'm using the Nvidia GPU client.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html

Looks like that server is supposed to be working but it does appear to be under heavy load so it may have intermittent problems with receiving completed WU's.

If you go to http://171.67.108.25 and the page displays as OK then you should have good connectivity. Just make sure you don't have a firewall or other data network security mechanism in place that is blocking the GPU client but based on the error messages you posted I don't think that is the case.

Your GPU client will continue trying to transmit the completed WU's while it's running. So as long as it successfully transmits within 48 hours of downloading the WU then you'll get credit for it. If it goes longer than 48 hours though then it's not credited.

A_Dead_Jedi
01-02-2009, 06:44 PM
Well, I seem to blow through WU's anyway, so it's no real loss if it doesn't upload.

Char Ell
01-02-2009, 06:56 PM
It's a loss if your rig processes the WU but you don't get credited for it because you couldn't upload it within the required timeframe. IMHO that sucks! :)

In the past couple of months that I've been doing GPU folding there have been times where the servers stopped handing out new WU's or wouldn't accept WU's for a while so it's not entirely unexpected to run into server side issues with this project. I can't remember a time though when a problem wasn't resolved in time for my completed WU's to be uploaded before they expired.

This can happen with certain chipsets.. what GPU are you using? Apart from looking pretty the gpu client actually diminishes folding performance, so isnt good or anything more than a few seconds of showing it off :p

Fahmon can be downloaded with an installer or as a zip which runs from wherever you extract it. Once you start it, first click 'download new projects' so it can update its list of what projects are being distributed.

all you need to do is "add client" >>
>under "name" you can call it what you like - most name it after their graphics card, or you could call it "Betsy" :D
>under location> press the browse button and find your f@h folder >> in most cases its in : C>program files>folding@home>folding@home-gpu

Welcome to teamLFN stinger ;) The 5xxx series isnt supported in the official client yet - you can get some improved performance by using the force ati (http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net-folding-home-team/586494-5870-f-h-5k-ppd.html) flag on the shortcut. F@H had been happy chugging along through the night, until yesterday morning, when I found that my computer had BSOD'd sometime during the night, and restarted. I thought it was just a fluke, but it happened again this morning. I have no clue what would cause this. I doubt it was heat, since the hottest my GPU gets during an entire day of folding is about 64', which is a pretty safe temp.

Anyone have any ideas about what could cause this?

I'm using a GTX 260 with 196.21 drivers. Unfortunately this only seems to happen when I leave the program overnight, not during the day, so I miss the BSOD. The only reason I know it's a BSOD is because the error message told me it was. I'll try to copy-paste the windows log next time I get the issue.

Although my home didn't lose power, there was a storm a couple of days ago that left most of my town w/o power, and many have only regained it now. Perhaps the town's been trying to fix the power during the night, when most won't notice it being cut off, though that normally would just shut my pc off, not BSOD it and have it auto-restart. However, if I don't get the issue again, that might be the explanation.

On a positive note, I'm only about 6 or 7 days into folding, and I'm already at 95 WUs. The GPU client really is something. (I'd hook up my 2nd GPU too, but the FAQ seems to imply that you need a 2nd monitor, which I don't have.)

The electrical explanation is definitely a very plausible one. My friend cant run a pc at his house without it needing to be plugged into a UPS at all times.

As for the second GPU - a second monitor isn't required - you can use a dummy plug - all this requires is a DVI>VGA adapter, which comes with most GPUs and 3x 68ohm resistors - which cost about a buck. >> more info and pics HERE (http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net-folding-home-team/384733-30-second-dummy-plug.html)

I think it might have been the electricity, since it ran through the night just fine last night, and the power problems in my town have been fixed. If it's not, it could just be that my PC can't go 24/7, but perhaps only a 24/6 "and on the 7th day he rested" schedule. However, I think the power explanation is more likely.

As for a dummy plug, I'll look around my workbench area to see if I have any extra resistors lying around, though I think I used most of them in a project. If so, next time I head around my nearest electronic parts store, which, sadly, isn't especially close by, I'll pick some up.

Liverandbacon
03-20-2010, 07:29 PM
It appears that the BSOD had nothing to do with power problems, as those have been sorted out for a while, and it happened last night. It is getting far warmer than last week, but my temps are comfortably under 70 during the hottest part of the day, so nights really shouldn't be an issue. Even more bizarre is that this only seems to happen when I'm not at my computer, and only at night. I may have to reserve F@H for the time when I'm awake from now on, however since I go to sleep late, and wake up pretty early, that shouldn't be too big an issue.

Edit: Sorry for the double post. Didn't notice that I was the last person to post in the thread.

It appears that the BSOD had nothing to do with power problems, as those have been sorted out for a while, and it happened last night.

You shouldnt rule it out so quickly. There could be power fluctuations at your mains that whilst tolerable by most equipment, really irritate pcs, which need to suck juice at a steady rate - especially when a high end GPU is in there powering away at an intensive computational task like F@H.

This is why UPS devices exist ;) Have a read of this (http://www.thesmallest.com/lessonettes/ups-indepth.html) for some more info, and keep an eye on it.

As far as folding goes. I ONLY do it when my computer is idle. If I need to use the comp for any reason, then I switch it off.

However, I keep my comps on 24/7 so this may not apply to you or others.

I believe there is a setting in F@H where you can set the priority of folding where it won't use as many (or any) cycles if you are doing something else however. At work, so I can't look at my settings to say for sure :raise:

I wouldn't pay much attention the the viewer Zimm. If you really want to monitor your progress, either follow the log directly or install FahMon (http://fahmon.net/) The viewer is just for showing off really, and on the GPU client, actually reduces folding performance if you leave it on.

As you have a GPU client, you may also want to keep an eye on your temps and such. EVGA Precision (http://downloads.guru3d.com/EVGA-Precision-1.9.4-download-2545.html) is a nice little app you can use, and you generally dont need an EVGA card to run it ;)

As you have a GPU client, you may also want to keep an eye on your temps and such. EVGA Precision (http://downloads.guru3d.com/EVGA-Precision-1.9.4-download-2545.html) is a nice little app you can use, and you generally dont need an EVGA card to run it ;)

^^^ Good to know. Just joined the team, currently folding on my xp rig using the cpu client (core2duo 2.13ghz), as I learned the gpu client would not be all that great with my chintzy geforce 210.

This pc will be folding almost all the time, as I rarely game when working (which is always these days) and if I do, it will be ME2 on the new rig, or some PS3.

I will be folding with my new htpc rig (see the good M$ support thread) and am curious about which client I should use on it.

i7 860 vs 250gt? Which will be more productive? I seem to recall some folders dual-folding with cpu and gpu clients?

Hello Glen! welcome to teamLFN!

The most productive client to use on CPUs is the SMP client. See the f@h High Performance Clients page (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther) for more info

You can indeed have separate CPU and GPU clients - as the GPU client does not draw on the CPU much. The only issues here are heat, and usability of your pc. In alot of instances, its quite feasible to have your GPU client running and still do most normal PC tasks, but if the CPU clients are running, this is diminished, particularly if you have all cores chipping in.

From a work perspective, the clients which get the most done are in this order:

GPU nv>GPU ati>PS3>CPU(SMP)>CPU std

I dont have that kit specifically, but I'd imagine your 250GT would probably match all for cores of your i7 running at full pelt - and leave you with a usable PC for non gaming activities.

If it is a HTPC, you generally don't want anything running if that rig is recording TV. You can set windows task scheduler to run the f@h client at certain times when you know it wont be doing any recording.

Am I being wimpy? If it is a HTPC, you generally don't want anything running if that rig is recording TV. You can set windows task scheduler to run the f@h client at certain times when you know it wont be doing any recording. It is an HTPC build, but it is not getting much HTPC use yet, as we still have our Comcrap DVR. Soon to be a thing of the past :) I will not be using it for much recording of tv though, as we are about to drop our cable tv subscription and get netflix. Free basic cable comes with the new apartment, so net we save $40 and get to watch movies we choose. How novel.
Regardless, and back on topic, I will be folding with the high performance nvidia gpu client by the end of the week. Looking at the team, I can catch a good many of these cats, but the top three are sick! In a helpful, protein folding sort-of-way :p I am oddly proud of being a part of this... and am trying to get more folks interested. Thank you, Team LFN, for raising my awareness!

I run mine constantly as unless I'm watching a Blu-Ray.. the PS3 gets no action ( <3 Xbox ) :xp: Now, if you actually USE the PS3, keep in mind it's either folding OR gaming as folding ties the entire system up.

Heat so far has been a non-issue.. however my entertainment system setup is all open air, tiered glass shelving (no sides). Probably why I've never had a RRoD either (cross fingers)... ;)

Enclosed shelves or boxes might generate more of a buildup.

I understand the reservation, though do like to remind people that the PS3 client was a collaboration between Sony and stanford university - it's not a homebrew by some scary hairy scene guys :D

Hence, it is designed to not destroy everyones ps3. Chainz' point about ventilation however, is an excellent one - though IIRC you do electrical setups - so I'm sure you are more than aware of that consideration :)

I am oddly proud of being a part of this... and am trying to get more folks interested. Thank you, Team LFN, for raising my awareness!

Nothing odd about it! It's a great cause and easy to contribute to :) The fact that we have maintained our plateau position for so long indicates that we have a nice dedicated team :thmbup1:

It's great to spread the word and get others interested :) Even if they want to fold for themselves or another team, the nett result is still a positive one.

Good info on the PS3 client, ChAiNz and Astro... I think I will leave it alone, as an SMP on my 2.13 C2D and the nV client on my 250gt should keep me satisfied.

Ventilation is never an issue :) As you surmised Astro, I cannot help to be obsessed with such things.... it is not good to watch a 20KW Mole-Richardson HMI explode due to my rigging in a poor airflow position == unemployment!

EDIT: Uh, ok. Now I see that the more POWA you have, the larger assignments you are given. The GPU client destroys my standard C2D client... chewing up a hundred parcels a minute! I guess I will see how much the SMP client improves my performance on this PC.

I will see how much the SMP client improves my performance on this PC.

The SMP client, whilst impressive for a CPU setup, really taxes your system, and gets through relatively less for the power it has drawn. Our greatest SMP star folder is tk102. I know he used the SMP client alot, but as we haven't heard from him in a while, I'm not sure what he is currently using.

EVen though he is aloof from the forums atm - its great to see his rig is still folding away for teamLFN.

kudos to tk, wherever he may be! (likely in his workshop making some crazy glasses) ;)

Professor Vijay Pande just posted an update on the f@h blog. The v7 client is about to start a limited alpha - looks like they are integrated multicore GPU setups natively - finally!

Here's an update on our v7 client efforts. The v7 client is a complete re-write in order to make the client more reliable, simple to maintain, and easier to include features that donors have requested. The first versions will not have everything that donors have asked for, but there will be some significant changes, such as the integration of classic, SMP, and GPU clients, the ability for a single client to handle all of these (eg multi-core + GPU) simultaneously (via multiple cores), a cleaner and more reliable GUI, much better and sophisticated tools for 3rd party developers, and in time the ability to use the FAH client to manage multiple machines easily.

The console version of the v7 client has gone through internal testing and we're starting a very limited alpha release. There are definitely some rough edges, but I'm excited to see it get this far. Assuming there are no show stoppers, I hope that we'll have something ready for open beta testing in a month or two, maybe sooner.

I hope you're right but I interpreted the "multicore + GPU" to mean integration of the SMP and GPU clients. Of course it would be helpful if one client could run on multiple GPU's as well. It definitely sounds like the v7 client will bring welcomed improvements.

I hope they do have integrated multi GPU setups, it seriously is a PITA to set up.. two sets of clients with separate shortcuts modified to point to diffferent folders and tagged with with the -gpu flag, you then need to repeat this flag business in the client config :D \o/

Anyway, is there a nice, simple guide available to get F@H to run on both GPUs in an SLI rig?

I'm happy to walk you through it Q. I found the other guides haphazard, so have put together the guts of what you need to know below with visual aids, which are always the most helpful to me :)

Here's what you need for starters

Multiple Displays Recognised
*Outputs from each GPU need to be enabled, this is easiest if you happen to have two monitors, but for those that don't - you can construct a dummy plug that will make your nvidia CP think there is a second display.

I know you'll have no probs with it - so here's the famous 30 second dummy plug guide (http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/384733-30-second-dummy-plug.html)

Once you get your nvidia control panel to recognise two displays, make sure they arent in clone mode. This may possible be different seeing you have separate cards, but Ive noticed this with my 295 and the more recent drivers.

Install The Client
Install folding@home. Only install the new client if you have a Fermi card, If not, stick to the stable 6.23 (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/Folding@home-Win32-GPU-systray-623.msi)

>>Next, enable hidden folders in windows. I think you know how to do that, but let me know if you dont! This is so that you can find the actual folder that does contains the guts of the client, so that it can be replicated for the second GPU. It actually isnt in C/program files, but in:

C/Users/USERNAME/AppData/Roaming/

Where USERNAME is of course whatever your windows account name is

In this Roaming folder you will see the folding@homegpu folder, simply copy and paste a second one and rename it with a 2 at the end.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/MultiClients.jpg

To ensure you havent doubled up and are using both cards to work on same work unit, make sure the files highlighted in the blue square are NOT in the second folder you have created.

Setting Up The Shortcuts

I wish someone spelt it out easily to me.... this is where I got stuck for a bit, but once you see it visually - it makes sense.

You need to create a custom shortcuts FOR EACH CLIENT - Go to the folding folder in Program files, and R.Click the exe to make a new shortcut. Then R.click the the shortcut, and select Properties to adjust its parameters. Target and Start In are what you are looking at

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/CUTS2.jpg

Target: Your folding folder in Program Files. The location doesn't need to be changed but you need to add the -gpu X flag after it, corresponding to that number you put into the config

eg.
"C:\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe" -gpu 0

Start In: >> This is what you need to change from the default, to your folding folder in the usually hidden folder in AppData/Roaming

"C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu"

Hence, you need to create Two shortcuts, one for each GPU.

One shortcut's "Start in" points to the first folding@home-gpu folder in AppData/Roaming, and the second points to the second folder you created in there.

Setting Up The Multiple Clients Config
To get to the clients config, start a client from teh new shortcuts you have created. You will see a coloured icon(s) on the system tray >>R click the folding icon in the system tray when it is running(or it usually comes up automatically after a fresh install) You have to do this twice of course, once for each client.

Under the USER tab(not pictured_ you will need to put in your username and our team number of course: 140370.

For the CONNECTION and ADVANCED Tabs:

Is is essential you get the insert the -gpu X flag (where x is whatever corresponding number to what you set up in the folding client config)

Hence
1st CARD/GPU: Config: says -gpu 0 in parameters and in the shortcut
2nd CARD/GPU: Config says -gpu 1 in parameters and in the shortcut

Also ensure each machine has a different ID in the config
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/CONFIG1.jpg

Once all that is done, THATS IT!

To test it, set up a folding monitor such as FahMon (http://fahmon.net/) and set up client monitoring corresponding to each folder in AppData Roaming.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/Astrotoy7/fahmonsetup.jpg

Good Luck - let us know if anything needs clarifying

Hello RC - at present, the GPU client does get through more calculations on an nvidia card than an ATI card, but ATI cards still get through more than a CPU client.

Any contribution is a good one, for a great cause. If you would like to read more about ATI setups, the FAQ is here (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-ATI2)

Basically, you would also download the 6.23 client, and setup as normal with username and team number. The client should take care of the rest.

I wanted to break in my new PC specs, so I installed the Beta V7 FAHControl client. I'm running the CPU and GPU slot thingies.

swphreak

Intel Core i7 2600K. The whole Tcase vs Core Temp thing is confusing. Can't seem to find a direct answer anywhere on what the optimal/max temperature should be.

Q
09-22-2011, 04:14 PM
Have you tried Core Temp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/)? It's pretty accurate.

I use it or Real Temp (http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) when torture testing, and I haven't seen much of a difference between the 2.

EDIT: For the ultimate torture test, use IntelBurnTest (http://majorgeeks.com/IntelBurnTest_d5987.html). Set the number of threads to 8, the memory usage to max and it will get your CPU hotter than anything in real-world usage can. IntelBurnTest uses LinPack, which is what Intel uses to stress test their CPUs before shipping them. Use it in conjunction with either Core Temp or Real Temp, run it for an hour, and, if its max temp is anything below 85C (it can actually be anything below 90C; 100C is the supposed max, but 85C is where I draw the line), you're fine.

I got myself a Coolermaster heatsink/fan and it dropped temperatures 20 degrees. I'm running F@H, 100% on all cores, and the temperature is hovering around 50-53C.

Q
09-23-2011, 10:00 PM
Yeah, you should be fine, then.

Sandy Bridge runs cool, but those Intel stock heatsinks (if that's what you were using) are usually woefully inadequate. I used the one that came with my Bloomfield just until I could find a decent deal on a good aftermarket heatsink and my CPU would routinely go well over 70C just in normal everyday use.
