This project has been taken over by Jenni, so this thread can still be used. :thmbup1:

Looking forward to this :)

Do you count the closeups as part of backgrounds?

Monkey Mania
07-19-2009, 06:04 AM
I'll do the closeups, but will keep the backgrounds the same.

Laserschwert

I assume the 25% of finished Guybrush are his walkcycle... could you post an animated GIF of that one?

BTW: GREAT work... I'll be thrilled if you get this done.

And I wish I could be of help here, as this is a project I REALLY would like to see finished. I was thinking about trying to "Cursify" (or "Tillerfy") the backgrounds, but just like with the sprites, I think that's beyond my capabilities.

Spadge, it looks like the version you've done is CMI Guybrush with SE art.

Melee Lookout is at 10% now!

Having worked on a few game mods over the years, might I suggest you start and finish one character completely, release it as a wip patch and then move on to the next character. Releasing as you go keeps interest up, and even if you get bogged down, you don't end up with 20 unfinished characters.

Ambitious project (and CMI style backgrounds would just be lovely, even if not in your scope).

I'm just hoping for a simple hair mod for Guybrush (and possibly Elaine). Irishsmile?

Monkey Mania

I'm working in sections. The first being Guybrush and Melee lookout. It will be released that way. So when a section is released, you won't have a completed Guybrush talking to an incomplete character.

Challenges include:

- Head alignment - getting the new heads to align with the body during talking animations. It is pixel sensitive. 1 pixel off and it messes up the entire animation.
- Character design - figuring out what these semi-realistic characters look like in CMI cartoon style.
- Fitting the newly designed characters within the old design's boundaries.
- Graphics that are split up into sections, such as close ups.

Those are the biggies, there will probably be more as I progress.

Laserschwert
07-21-2009, 07:34 PM
Sounds like a reasonable approach. Have you considered drawing at a higher resolution, while keeping some body parts separate? That way you could possibly simplify some animations (like talking, because you can move elements separately on a sub-pixel level).

Wow. That screenshot makes me want to play the SOMI:SE! Please don't give up!

jp-30
07-21-2009, 09:11 PM
I wonder if there are any plugins that may be able to roughlt CMIise / cartoonise the SOME:SE background art (basically something akin to a cell-shader for 3D objects), then a few sky / cloud replacements would be in order, so the characters don't look like they're from another world.

Obviously redrawn backgrounds would be the way to go, but I doubt anyone with enough skill has enough time to volunteer to such a project.

That looks really nice, but the backgrounds definitely have to be Cursed too in order for it to work. :)

Since you're going to release it in steps, maybe I can keep up with you in providing backgrounds as you work on the characters? I'm going to work on the lookout screen right now. :)

cocomonk22
07-23-2009, 08:59 PM
By the way, Bill Tiller (background artist for CMI) made an image of the Scumm Bar from MI1 and put his CMI Guybrush in there:

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6823/mi26.jpg
Source: New MI1 special edition (http://billisboard.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post.html)

Maybe Jenni can use this as additional reference to adapting the MI1 backgrounds to CMI's style.

Or you could use his original from theScummBar website:

Except would you have to worry about animating clouds?

Ah, great stuff going on in this thread. I'll play a CMI style MI:SE for sure.

Monkey Mania
07-24-2009, 06:53 PM
That's a different angle from the original, it would require programming and all that messy stuff.

Hey, if someone can program this, be my guest.

cocomonk22
07-24-2009, 07:10 PM
I'm not sure that's likely... The Scumm Bar background is part of the dock background, isn't it? Unless you make a separate room for just this screen with new walk paths, an image for the open door, etc. And you would need Bill Tiller's permission anyway (No use or reproduction without written permission).

Pretty cool! The skull on the hat and the face seem a little off though. I tried a quick edit on Photoshop, hope you don't mind.
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/8236/clipboard02c.png

EDIT: Improved face.

cocomonk22
07-26-2009, 06:14 AM
The face on Monkey Mania's version resembles Lechuck more, but I like the skull on the hat in Spadge's edit.

TheJoe
07-26-2009, 08:33 AM
But if we're going for pure CMI style - Spadge has the face perfect.

Monkey Mania
07-26-2009, 12:40 PM
That's funny, since I traced Lechuck's face exactly from the CMI sprite. I don't know about the wrinkles since he isn't a zombie.

Let me see if I can fix some things.

Edit:
Here we go.

Looks awesome! I hope you manage to finish this project. I'm just not sure if I like those...rubber band thingys in his beard, though... Why did you add them? Just curious :) Is it your original vision of the Ghost Pirate LeChuck? Other motivations? I think the ghost beard would have a problem reprising its role as alive and wriggling in MI2 if it's tied up like that :p

LucasArts thinks so...

besides, Lechuck has a huge beard, it would cover up his ghost rib cage if left alone.

I didn't like the SE's character sprites at all, so this would be a huge improvement in my opinion.

Hm, k, I didn't notice how it was tied up in the in-game sprites of the SE. Haven't completed it, so had to search up a youtube video of the end to see the closeup. And yup, it's tied up even there.

It looks like it's tied up in the original as well, I just never noticed it:
http://members.shaw.ca/victorwhho/Monkey%201.JPG

Then the close up in the original game is actually wrong. Oh well. Keep up the good work, I won't disturb you anymore (for now ;))

Edit: It may be that it's like dreads or something in the original, though, as it looks pretty unkempt. Anyway, it's weird that Symbiote Studios' statue based on the SE has LeChuck with a normal beard. But that's their choice I guess. After all it fits better with almost all of LeChuck's designs.

Edit2: Just watched a gameplay clip from the orginal SMI. It doesn't look like it has any rips in it after all, it just did in the screenshot I found :p If you want to base your sprites on the SMI:SE-sprites, that's your choice. I would've preferred it to be based on the original sprites, but do as you like :)

Look at how strange it looks if you mix the special edition art with Monkey Mania's Guybrush sprite:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3591/3795867384_0104717678.jpg

With Monkey Mania's drawing it is actually possible to make a sprite out of this.

Hey is this still being made?
If so, I would like to get in on the sweet sweet background art creation. I was part of a similar project a few years ago that wound up being scrapped.
If someone is still in charge of this drop me a message.
here are a couple examples of some of Monkey island related work.
This was a background I did coloring work on for the scrapped remake project. (http://cpage.deviantart.com/art/Melee-island-104977635)

I'm sorry for bumping this thread, but I'm very sad that this never got finished. It's never too late to do it though, so I'd just like to state that if this ever gets picked up again, I'll gladly help in any way I could!

If this project is actually still going but elsewhere, please point me in the right direction!

Jenni

I have one more character drawn and a half finished background. I haven't touched this in a while, sadly.

The hardest part is refiguring the art to match up with those in the game, since a lot of it is split up, especially the backgrounds, and the characters have to be resized and the animations have to line up properly.

If you want to help out with that, it would help a lot.

Jenni is sounds great that somebody continue work on this project. I start new thread but main idea is the same :)

http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?p=2853933#post2853933

Like in title of thread, only replace spirtes make games better.

I try only adding some more objects like this:

But I find something like this:

Cool stuff:

Of course In MI1 Guybrush are smaller and have bigger head :D
