No, it’s not a confirmation, but a rumor is circulating that LucasArts is planning for an October 2010 release date for their highly anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. According to French gaming site Starwars-Universe.com, they have a “very reliable source that the game is currently set for October 2010. But keep in mind that [...]

I wouldn't say it's impossible, but let's just wait and see. Like the article said, MMO's are very susceptible to delays, and even if that date is LucasArts' target date, it's very possible they'll have to postpone the date.

Even if it is true, why should it even take that long? TOR has been in the works since late '05; BioWare at least has pre-production wrapped up and have already created and implemented most of the content by now.

It's more likely that TOR will see a spring-ish release.

It's more likely that TOR will see a spring-ish release. That was my initial guess when they announced the game: Q1 or Q2 2010. But at this point it could be later. They will almost definitely be doing an invite beta test which should last at least 3 months if not more. And they haven't even finished telling us what all the classes and planets are, or numerous other things about the game. I know that even Q1/Q2 2010 is a ways off but I think that is pushing it, and I don't see the game getting a summer release.

FWIW, I don't disagree with you though. They have been working on this game forever and it probably should be ready sooner. It pisses me off when companies like Blizzard take their sweet damn time just because they can. And it seems like BioWare/LA are going to be doing the same thing.

Would you rather have an incomplete or bug ridden game? Bearing in mind that having a weak launch is a good way to ensure that an MMO wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell to succeed?

As far as I'm concerned they can take as long as they need... as long as there is space combat...

They were supposed to have that game out in 2008 and now only 1/3 of the original game will be released almost 2 years later. And Diablo 3 is never coming out. Blizzard could release any game and it will guaranteed be at least the best selling game the month of its release.

Since we have no idea if this date is correct or not I can't say if this will actually happen to TOR.

I say it won't be Fall 2010, if only because I don't think I can wait that long. I already quit WoW in anticipation of TOR, I don't really want to have to go back for a year. :(

Because they have a reputation of quality that comes from taking their time. If they churned out a game every 6 months they'd lose that reputation very quickly.

I am not saying release games more often, it'd be nice if they could stick to their annual release schedule though. While yes they did release Wrath of the Lich King last year, they will release nothing this year. Because of this they have said we can expect 2 games from them next year, but we don't know which ones. My guess is Starcraft 2 and a new WoW expansion, so once again Diablo 3, a game that should have been out this year, will not come out for 2 more years. It's just getting to the point of ridiculous. Obviously I could be wrong about a new WoW expansion but it'd make sense and I think you get my point.

Agreed...it has been in development for 5 years by then, should be ready...but MMO's take so much time to create that I think it'll go Q1 2011. Shooting for the holiday season mostly ends up with rushed games or postponing. Knowing Bioware, it'll be postponing.

I know one thing's probably for certain: they'll want to release TOR quite a bit of time before or after the next WoW expansion. Warhammer Online came out 2 months before the WotLK expansion, and all those Warhammer players flocked right back to WoW when the next expansion hit. BioWare can't underestimate WoW fans when they plan TOR's release date.

That's looking at a half-empty bottle instead of a half-full one. Maybe they WANT to challenge WoW. They have said they'd like the challenge. It only makes sure Blizzard needs to come with an excellent expansion and that Bioware will need to create a brilliant game. They can push eachother a bit...

It would be foolish to release the game around when a new WoW expansion is coming out. Even if the game looks 20 times more amazing than it does now by the time it's close to release, WoW is a proven MMO and even if people are enjoying TOR, a lot will go back to WoW if TOR has only been out for a couple months when a new WoW expansion comes out. My guess is there will be a new one late next year, but that is just speculation.

Agreed, It's all about Investment. The only Reason I kept playing SWG was because I put so much time and effort into the damn thing, the game sucked, but it was home. Same with Wow, anyone who has a few months/years play time in WOW, will go back to check out the new content... It would be foolish for Bioware to try and compete with a proven beast like Wow from Day one imo

Point taken...you can only draw in WoW-players when there's nothing new to see in WoW. I just meant to say they could push each other to greater heights. That way the WoW players will get their great expansion and SWTOR will rock. It's not bad for us players. But it's a marketing suicide yeah :xp:

Yeah, and guess what happens in 2010 or 2011? Oh right, I've moved on to another game and have no interest in TOR anymore. I waited YEARS for the disappointment that was Fable 2, so here's an idea Bioware, make a game on a schedule that we can actually work with. There's no excuse for 6 years worth of game development, that's just pathetic.

Well I won't say 6 years of development is a waste, because I know some good games that take years to make. Team ICO's games come to mind(ICO in 2001, Shadow of the Colossus in 2005, The Last Guardian possibly bext year). If it they can take years and make a good product, then by all means let them. Just don't let it turn into a Duke Nukem Forever(15 years in development, only to get canceled a few months ago when the developer went bankrupt).

I'd guess the only problem with the TOR wait is that it's been in secret development for 3 years already, and we're impatient and eager to play it. Maybe the playable demo next month at GamesCon/PAX is indication that TOR will be coming out sooner than we think. We can only hope.

It is when they start spoiling it 2 years in advance that things just start getting silly. "oh look at this great game that will have totally outdated graphics and nobody will be interested!"

So five years in development comes down to a flat letdown only to excite fans with something to make them forget KOTOR only to keep hyping the game so that the next two years. My expectations are very high for this game to be a success... but I am not excited, nor hopeful that it will be anything but another SW Galaxies.

its long producation is prolly a combination of not enough game devolopers, wanting more publicity, and also to make a very high quality game the type where bioware is in the same league as blizzard

expectations are going to be high.... people will lose interest from now till then and regain.. people give wow alot of credit. i cant see wow holding its numbers for another year. just my thoughts but from what ive seen (the huge void left from swg, the love of the star wars concept, and the hatred of wow) this game is going to be very popular

I think it is most possible for a October 2010 release! I hope they dont rush the game though!
