View Full Version : Batman Arkham Asylum

Ok so the official demo is out and i am looking to get your guys thoughts on it. I was skeptical at first but after playing the demo this is a game that i am greatly looking forward to. Especially since its following the Arkham graphic novels intrigues me even more because those were very dark books. As of right now i personally cant find anything that i dont like in the demo. Cutscenes are amazing to watch, music is great and Kevin Conroy, Mark Hammil, and Arleen Sorkin reprising their roles and they still sound fantastic imo.

below are 2 links.

This is me playing the demo skipped some of the cutscenes to make time limit and rushed a tad bit.

This is the streaming video of the demo cutscenes and all on my JTV channel, quality isnt as good since its a streaming vid.

i look forward to hearing your responses and opinions on this what seems to be amazing game.

I've played the demo at least 20 times by now, and I've since predordered the game. The brawling is very satisfying, and the stealth aspect of the game is just right.

I've played the last room more than 20 times by restarting that area. I like to screw around with those guys. I've strung them all upsidedown from the gargoyles, stealth takedown'd them all, loudly knocked them out, and a bunch of other stuff. It's way too much fun terrorizing the last inmate with batarangs.

Edit: If you do Y+B when you get up to x5 combo, you'll throw an enemy.

08-10-2009, 10:01 AM
Just having them all reprising their roles made it fantastic to me. The gameplay being badass and fun is just the icing on the cake for me :p

08-10-2009, 04:39 PM
Mark Hamill <3
Hearing his voice again makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.

08-10-2009, 05:43 PM
I saw some videos before the demo was released and it looked okish, so when the demo came out I figured what the heck its free...and just like Mystic I'm greatly looking forward to it now.

I've so far only replayed 3 times, if just to replay the final room (I didn't know you could restart an area ;o). I love picking them off one by one, and doing reverse takedown >:D.

08-10-2009, 08:18 PM
yea the last room in the demo is fun to play around in. like if you pull up the reticle for your batarang instead of RT use RB and it will follow it with the camera for a more dramatic effect.

if you get a 5+ hit combo streak going hit y+b you will do a take down move which is pretty nice. in the demo you can actually unlock the riddler trophy by find his 2 trophies in the demo. the 1 st is in the first room you start in the 2nd is in the electric chair room. and you can view his in game model.

I hope the full game stays fresh longer cuz i am getting tired of great games being really short in playtime with limited replayability.

08-11-2009, 05:40 AM
All this talk of RT and LB is confusing me, I have no such key on my keyboard...

Very good game, looks beautiful in 1080p on my computer, you can keep your game-pads and your up-scaled 720p. ;)

I'm undecided whether to order the standard edition or the collectors with its Batarang...

08-11-2009, 05:45 AM
This will look great at 2560x1600.

08-11-2009, 12:45 PM
yeah i have a 360 my lappy cant handle any games and i dont wanna build a desktop. but it still looks great none the less and that on my standard definition tv lol.

08-11-2009, 02:40 PM
I'm finding myself using detective mode more than I'd like to.

What's the best takedown you guys have done? I think my best is when I took out three henchmen in a short amount of time. I strung one guy up, two guys walked under him, I batarang'd the hanging guy, and bam! Three guys down.

Another move I thought was funny is when I punched a guy climbing up a ladder.

Quiet you

Looks like the PC version demo won't let you edit ANY of the quality settings I'm stuck at 1680x1050 at whatever settings it defaults, too.

Of course, you can easily force it with ATI cards via CCC or the like, but it's still a restrictive pain in the ass...

Funny; proprietary graphical options were supposed to be eliminated with increased competition and better rendering standards over ten years ago. Now, there's only ATI and Nvidia, and for the past five years I keep on seeing those damned "Plays Best on a Nvidia" emblems on every high-profile game. The Rockefellers are smiling today. :dozey:

08-11-2009, 07:59 PM
my best takedown?

while cuting the rope to drop the guy on the 2 henchmen under him is great. I like goin into the center structure getting under the grate and when someone walks over pop out and silent takedown the guy

08-12-2009, 12:03 AM
Heh, this game looks completely awesome, and is probably by far one of the best Batman games yet...obviously:D I know that Steam is offering demos and a pre-order...so I think I'll take advantage of that:D

Arkham Asylum looks like a combo of Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, and a little bit of Prototype...

...oh, and Chuck Norris:D

08-12-2009, 12:19 AM
If you pre-order on/in Gamestop you get a bonus challenge map where your poisoned or whatever by scarecrow and all the bad guys look like skeletons. Batman vs Skeletons...yea :D

And if you pre-order the Collectors Edition (the batarang looks awesome :D) you also get another bonus challenge map

I does, in vista you have to right click on the short-cut and select launcher, not sure about XP but the launcher should be a separate program in the game folder. The other option is to do it in the .cfg file where you can change all sorts of settings.

ok as many of you know by now that have an XBOX 360 future games from this point on will have unlockable avatar clothing as rewards for certain achievments in games. A few people are speculating that their may be a batman cowl in our future......your thoughts.

Now THAT would be really cool, my Bro would definately be all over it{huge Batman fan}...I like these new additions that they keep updating the 360 with, all fun and games..literally:D

Hmmm, perhaps there could be a Joker thingy available? Who knows?:D

08-12-2009, 12:07 PM
well so far i am in love with the Sam Fisher outfit and the Obi wan armor and tunic+lightsaber como. they look excellent and are going to add new stuff every thursday but right now i am glad i have no points, because i wanna wait on something thats flatout amazing.

08-12-2009, 02:15 PM
Am I the only person that thinks the Avatar marketplace items are bulls***? I mean, I like the idea of unlocking avatar items through achievements, that's something I thought they should have had since the NXE launched. However, am I going to spend money on s*** for my avatar that myself and friends will see for maybe a second every once in a while? Or am I going to save that money for something like, say, one of the Fallout 3 DLC packs (I know I saw quite a few avatar bits that cost 360 points, and the Fallout 3 stuff is 800 points).

08-12-2009, 02:42 PM
i agree i dont like that i have to pay for nifty items and such. but i love the idea of unlockables through achievments. I wont buy anything unless its downright AMAZING...LoL

08-12-2009, 04:20 PM
Yea the idea of paying for that stuff is stupid (too bad people will buy it...), the achievement way is a good idea though.

08-12-2009, 05:17 PM
people have already bought the things....lol. of course there's always someone that will pay for anything no matter how mundane it may be. In time i hope it will all come down to achievement unlock.

08-13-2009, 01:05 AM
Am I the only person that thinks the avatars are just a ****ing retarted idea as it is?

08-13-2009, 01:50 AM
im not gonna lie i actually like the avatars really. theres no real use for them right now. but the using them in avatar games is cool plus Guitar Hero 5 support for avvies....i love it LoL.

and XBL is releasing "Joy Ride" which looks to me like the 360s version of PS3s "Mod Nation Racing" which is also an avatar game.

08-14-2009, 04:54 AM
I like the Avatar's as a fun little nocost frill. It's there for fun. However, when they start charging half the price of a piece of DLC for a game for clothing for em, that's where I draw the line.

08-14-2009, 04:04 PM
well heres another vid of the final room doing some silent takedowns. i am shooting for hanging them all on the gargoyles. i should have it done tonight.

check out my channel out for other vids. www.youtube.com/mysticspade18

I just played a bit of the Steam demo yesterday. Definitely impressive, while I don't think I'll be getting the game on release, I'd consider it once a price drop hits. Only reason is because there is so much on my want list already.

I also don't like the model for Batman. He is too f**king huge. His gauntlets are bigger than Chris Redfield's biceps which are already gigantic. His awesome voice makes up for it though, <3 Kevin Conroy.

08-15-2009, 12:24 AM
The first time playing through the demo, I mistook Comissioner Gordon for Chris Redfield :p

08-15-2009, 12:35 AM
All I know is I'm glad I decided not to spend $600 to go to Disney this December, subsiquently missing out on Christmas, because this is now on top of my Christmas list. This game looks fantastic, I really want to get ahold of that demo now. =D

08-15-2009, 12:47 AM
i too will admit that it looks like everyones been hitting the gym right before this game. IMO i would say bats is excusable because they lead you to believe that suit is somewhat reinforced which can kinda explain the bulk but otherwise they've been hitting up the roids.

New video shows the gadgets you can use:

08-21-2009, 01:04 AM
Just finished the demo and I really love what they did with the Freeflow combat, animations and camera. Combat is very intuitive and great to look at, though the novelty faded by the 3rd encounter or so. I wouldn't place it on my Top 5 looked-forward-to games, but it's definitely a title worth its salt. Besides, it ran slowish on my PC (albeit I liked how they've smoothened the lag so that it feels more like being in slow motion than a jittery slideshow).

08-21-2009, 09:06 AM
I ordered the CE for PC in the end. The Batarang will look good on my shelf.

08-21-2009, 02:01 PM

Hopefully this is a trustworthy review (cause if it is then I know the game will be good :P).

Short video telling some of Arkham Asylum's history:

08-22-2009, 12:25 AM
Looks like quite a good game! Maybe ill get it one day...

08-24-2009, 12:01 AM
i played a demo at gamestop and it's very fun. My only concern is how long it'll take to beat the story mode. it seems to go pretty quickly, going from one place to another. does anyone know how long it'll take to beat the game?

08-24-2009, 01:22 AM
Well it definitely seems like they'll have enough villains to make it last. That's something, at least.

08-24-2009, 03:29 AM
yeah the fact that this game is based loosely around the Arkham novels is what sold me on it in the beginning. having played the full version already i can definitely say that this game if you're a fan is worth the money. but if you're just looking for a new game to hold you over its great as well but not for the $60 tag.

Having spent some recent quality time on the demo, I both love it and hate it at the same time. I LOVE how it gets you hooked on the bios that you collect on random comic characters in the game, but I HATE how it forces you to think about how to dodge bullets. Batman facing armed people in this game is absolutely defenseless and you will die quick if you can't find a way out of the situation. I have not been able to beet the demo, so I can tell already that this is a game that is going to frustrate me a lot. I will say this though...for a Batman game.... the developers did their homework on this one big time.

08-24-2009, 08:09 AM
I have not been able to beat the demo

Were you playing a different demo from me? If you do it right no one should ever even shoot at you.

Ok so I am even worse than I originally thought... Gonna need the hint book for this one.

08-26-2009, 02:33 AM
ok guys i am updating my thread with some of my challenge vids that i have completed and will add more as i do them in the future/

this was my 2nd challenge i did

08-26-2009, 03:53 AM
I have heard a rumour that the Batarang in the CE is a just piece of plastic that is locked to the stand. Anyone else heard this, or unpacked their PS3/XBox version already? If it is true I am cancelling my pre-order.

EDIT: I found this (http://www.examiner.com/x-4096-Pittsburgh-Xbox-360-Examiner~y2009m8d25-Batman-Arkham-Asylum--Unboxing-the-collectors-edition). I was unsure about getting the CE before so I think I am going to cancel now.

08-30-2009, 04:57 AM
heres 2 more challenge rooms.

I'm too lazy to type up something original so I'll just quote a post I made about the game from my own forum :p

Played the demo just then.

Very nice. Love the combat and love the detective mode... reminded me a lot of Metroid Prime lol. It's nice how the demo was laid out, by the time you get to the last part of the demo you've learnt all you need to learn for that area and you can just let loose.

On the last part I was stealth diving on enemies and punching ones that came close and then grappling myself back up to the gargoyles before they noticed I was even there. Very cool once you get your movements down and it feels just like how you would see it in all of the various batman media.

It's coming out on Thursday down here... If I can find it cheaper than full price, I'll try and get it right away.

As mentioned, the fact that the TAS voices came back to do this is fantastic. However, I don't like the art style. As usual, they went with the "lets make it all dark and gritty and stuff RRRRRR!" look, and as a result, the characters have no nuance, and the amazing voices don't go with the visuals at all. It's like the newer, uglier characters are channeling the disembodied spirits of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin in order to talk. And really, should Harley Quinn ever look like this:

ever? :indif:

Personally, coming from someone who didn't watch the older Batman tv shows or read the comics, the art style didn't bother me at all. I can completely see where any fan of the game might be coming from, but personally nothing seemed too out of place for me.

08-31-2009, 01:06 PM
The art style doesn't really bother me, per-se, really just Harley Quinn (and to a lesser extent Comissioner Gordon who makes Chris Redfield look silly by comparison).

My love for TAS not-withstanding, that looks more like a hooker I'd find on Fremont Street than Harley Quinn.

08-31-2009, 01:33 PM
i personally love the art style i like the dark and grittyness of it. but i can see where you're comin from with Harley she does resemble a hooker...lol

These costume mods for the PC version demo are amazing: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=92752

I don't really care for the non-Batman ones, but all the different variants of his costume are amazing. I already uninstalled the demo, but I am tempted to reinstall it to try it with some of these costumes.

More of a gameplay question here. Is there a way to reload checkpoints or missions once you've beat the game? or do you just have to start a new game from scratch?

09-04-2009, 02:20 AM
i must say those suits are ****ING AMAZING!!!!! the cargo pants one is kinda lame tho...lol

anyways unfortunately is no reloadable checkpoints which i dont like to much. but this definitely is a game that i wont mind replaying more than once.

09-04-2009, 06:09 AM
some of those challenge rooms get pretty hard. i could never get past round 3 in the shock and awe extreme challenge. just can't seem to take them all down before the timer >_<.

09-04-2009, 02:15 PM
in all honesty i havent had too many issues with the challenge rooms. i posted a few vids of me playing them. i still have more to upload in the future.

09-04-2009, 04:33 PM
i must say those suits are ****ING AMAZING!!!!! the cargo pants one is kinda lame tho...lolYeah that is what I thought too. :p The Begins, TDK, and all the "classic" ones are awesome though.

**** the Riddler for delaying my game progression...

09-08-2009, 12:27 AM
Yea, so I played this game for the first time today (I never DL'd the demo) and I must say that I cannot wait for Friday so I can go out and buy it. I mean seriously, any game that lets you hang upside down and kidnap fools has my vote.

09-08-2009, 03:04 AM
yeah the first time i did the inverted takedown i giggled a bit no lie. im just completing all my riddles right now have like 20 or so left. if any of you need any help just ask.

09-11-2009, 05:40 AM
God damned Challenges are kicking my ass. And the Extreme Predator ones are bull****.

09-11-2009, 03:38 PM
I need to get back to playing Arkham and finishing the game. Got sidetracked by other stuff.

So far it's been pretty sweet. The freeflow combat just feels so great.

09-12-2009, 05:40 PM
Anyone get the 3 medals in Rumble in the Jungle Extreme? I can barely get 1.

09-13-2009, 03:49 AM
Double Post, I know, sorry.

I WAS SO CLOSE!!!! Any closer my **** would've been in its...eh...I'll leave it at that.

09-14-2009, 04:15 AM
i think the highest ive gotten is 2 medals on RnJ. havent played it in over a week or so. I just wonder what the 2 dlc packs are gonna be for it because they announced them and said that they were free for the 360 which made me happy.

09-14-2009, 01:38 PM
Meh, I got it last night. Now all I need to do is beat it on Hard to get the last achievement.

6 days and all 47 achievments unlocked. I believe thats a new record for me.
