I wanted to be trendy and re-use the thread title :) Wanted to tease everyone, do not ask when it will be done... I hope Q is not to angry I made this ;)

Some background:

With the sudden departure of great modder SithSpecter. it seemed that the restoration of Sleheyron would die with his leaving. We felt that was wrong. We also felt more creative freedom should work its way into the restoration, not simply sticking to the Bioware original idea. I.e. stick with the style, but have at it.

Description: The "addition" of Sleheyron to KOTOR.

We are modeling out more machinary to have about, and some giant ships for the larger docking areas. Right now they are just speeders super scaled up :-p

We have a custom story idea worked out, which I will not go into at this time. Again however, we are working on this part time, and not really rushing at all. Hopefully the landing area gets in game sometime next week or the week after.

So far Disbelieves has been doing all the work on this.

Great work Dis, it looks amazingly cool now with all the textures on it!
A very good job, I'll get to those machines and ships as promised.

I left my villa at the beach to get stuck in some sort of ruined city in the middle of a desert ;)

EDIT: The renders are ace! Can't stop look'n at them :drool2:

Yes, its one of my to do jobs. Though I'll have to PM Dis, to get those lovely buildings, I'm getting ideas on how to do my Skybox thing :p

M'yeah, renders always turn out great. Dis has done a great job on that ^_^

Its not a 100% done, needs a lifting mechanic, though I still have some loose ideas about how it should look. Digged up some of my droodles, worked out more ideas and still have plans for about 4 more "cargo transport and lifter" machines.

Keep an eye on this thread, you all know I like to do petite updates ;)

Awesome Q!

I will hold on further work until we can get all your ships and machines into the model so I can set all the coords and then work on getting it all in game.

I agree after seeing the renders, seeing it in game will be anti climatic :( Without proper lightmaps we simply do not yet have the nice shading and depth. One day though :)

So are you guys directly continuing on from SS's work by using his modules? Or are you starting fresh? Either way, its looking awesome (but the pink machines look a bit funky :D).

Ha the machine that are pink are un texturized 3d models, and they will be trains on trian tracks hauling cargo away :) I had not yet texturized them, as with the last blue wall near the larger landing docks.

This is a fresh start. Everything you see if brand new, we are re-using nothing that SS made. SS was more trying to mimic the Bioware screenshots of Sley and how it should look. Me and Q are taking our own ideas, keeping the round industrial building theme, and doing our own thing.

Interesting. Might be a nice change of pace to tramp through an industrial/dock area - the Nar Shaddaa "docks" never really did it for me. It will be interesting to see if you can get an appropriate "hive of activity" type feeling. Do you think with an area that large you will still be able to have a decent number of NPCs? I know you were having poly count issues with your Korriban module Quanon - how is this one fairing?

Well, Dis has send me his 3Ds Max files and I looked at the "motherfile".
The polycount is very, very, very high: 200.000 something O.o

Now, Dis said still he had to do the clean up work, there are a load of "behinds" of the buildings and walls you'll never see. So those have to go.

It'll be a real challenge to see if this turn out ok for the game. Certainly if we want NPCs runnin about in them.

A lot can change after the clean up. If it comes to worse, I'm afraid we'll have to redo the thing and make it smaller.

My middle city was over 100k and ran fine with a ton of npc's

People was I was thinking about.Since originally Sleheyron was cut from the game,right?So maybe HK-47 could had got some lines on Sleheyron about Bochaba the Hutt and the 322 meetbags he's killed(could be wrong about the exact number).

looks good, this slipped my mind when SS left, but I'd have been disappointed if it just died. I'm very glad you two decided to take it upon yourselves.

What happened to that middle city mod anyway? That was a very good looking mod.

I applaud you two (Disbeliever & Quanon) for doing this, and I know this is not any easy task for the both of you either. But it is certainly worth praise IMO, because any Sleheyron mod that we can play is better than no Sleheyron mod that we can't play or don't have.

As an update (no screens yet sorry):

I have been working on redoing the walkable area of the landing port. The way I created it before was a noob way to do it, and resulted in a VERY high poly count, which is kotor unfriendly. I am just about finished, and will begin retexturizing everything soon.

As a reference though, the original area had 220,000 polys, the new one has 27,000 so far :) I had to remove some details from buildings, but we have to work within the tools and engine.

More to come from us, Q is working on new trains and machines for the area as we speak :eek:

Héhéhé, well here's what I "cooked" up so far.
I've named them Giraffe and Crabs :lol:

Nr 3 will be just for transporting and less lifting things up. Once its done as a model I'll texture them all in one go.

Update:

No Screens yet, I will save that until the end just before the first area is put in game.

The poly count has been reduced from 200,000+ :lol: to about 24,000

Buildings were redone, some detail was lost, but as was said, the textures are suppose to provide the depth not poly count. kotor is an old game:thmbup1:

Once we get the machines, trains and ships done, they will be put in area, all textured again, screens rendered and area put in game.

Also, ONE 200,000+ poly map would really lag up the game, 3 would do something horrible to it. Bringing it down to 24,000 does take out some minute details, but also makes that module playable. :happy: :)

Not really, like most others pointed out, the game engine won't handle that high amount of polys. In a good way to play the game.

Imagine, somebody shoving a whole cow in to your mouth, instead of a Tbone steak :p

Thats the differance, plus its a bit early to start thinking about .bik movies :lol:

Well, Dis is hard at work, redoing our first area. Killed the polies like a madman :D

Anyway, didn't mean I was relaxing, well, perhaps a bit :lol:
So machines are ready to be textured, then shipped to Dis to implement in the area. Finally! :lol:

First one is a big flat transporting thing, aka flatbed.
Last row of pictures is my train, a compromise between my sketches I've done and the more heavy look, Dis was after. Rightfully so, my sketches where more of a sleek machine, bit to sleek for the industrial haven, Sleheyron is.

Defiantly looks like a "SW" train. Can't wait to see it with a texture. Though it would be expected to be polished and buffed durasteel, not on Sleheyron.

The biggest issue with polys was how I stupidly modeled the walkable area. That was 75,000+ polys I got rid of right there in doing it the right way. As Q always points out, you tend to go a bit wild in 3d studio making an awesome model, without taking into account the limitations and age of the game your modeling for.

I reduced the polys of some of the buildings and will let the textures make the depth more.

Once I get the goods from Q, new screens of the finished area should follow soon :)

Anyway, no new shots yet, Dis send me his MOTHER file, the file before it gets textured and polished for the game. It'll be my job to add in the more little details. Not much ofcourse, the polycount is at a 17.900 or there about.

Plus, I'm almost done texturing my machines. Once that all gets into the motherfile, its back to DIS and finish it off :)

Boy, lots of work!

Well, one little sentence is often considered as spam.
Mostly questions like: "Is done yet?" "No updates?"

Will be seen as spam if you don't add anything meaningfull as extra.
Its not forbidden to ask questions, though you'll just have to wait till me or Disbeliever post anything new about the mod.

Like I said you can ask things about the mod, like: "What you have in mind with Hutts?" "Will there be more then one cantina and will that be like in EP IV a dark hole?"

See, thats more to the topic. :)

I think there was a subforum to discuss rules if you feel like its really annoying or just don't agree.

That would do it. Been taking a class on 3DS in school and actually have to unlearn a few habits from KotOR Modeling :xp:

Ah well, still amazed at how much poly cutting was done...

And somewhat anxious to see it implemented...

A petite update!

Me and Dis have had some issues, thanks to having differant versions of 3Ds Max. What was susposed to be an easy exchange of files turned into a small nightmare with all kind of troubles.

So that put a small delay on our progress.
Though fear not, I think we're good to go now again :p

The glass will have a almost full CM_Baremetal effect. Not the best or greatest effects but it'll do. Unless I can come up with something more suitable :p

Funny, I have had the opportunity to work around very similar machinery not so long ago, working on a shoot in a train repair/maintenance facility. They had some monstrous overhead lifts not so different from what you are creating. Not sure if you did research, but you are doing an excellent job with realism.

Héh, no I didn't use any info on these machines. I just started modelling. Well I did a few sketches to get an idea what I wanted. Though I didn't think to google some photos of those kind of things.

Often thats better, as you often forget nice details you can enlarge/twist, you know to make it a bit more special/Sci-Fi.

Its what keeps us going, though don't be afraid throw in some critiques or questions.

Sometimes its better to have a second look at things, then just say its GOOD and it'll stay like that. Then again, once you worked on something for a few hours its hard to alter it or toss it out. You can fall in love with what you make :p

By Gameplay footage, I meant the party walking through the area.

Alrighty............. Back on track :)

Massive poly reduction has been going on. The entire area was remodeled from scratch to make it more KOTOR friendly. Alas you cannot always get what you want in game. We are hovering around 40,000 polys with all buildings, machines, crates, floor and man boxes etc :lol: Which is awesome, considering the screens you are about to see is from a version that still has all the backs, bottoms and tops to buildings. All the unnecessary stuff I will be deleting.

However, Q has a big barracuda :lol: After adding in his awesome ship polys take a huge jump. Perhaps we will have to just place speeders on the platforms and not have massive ships other than the EH. We will have to brain storm.

I am working on a version that has no backs, bottoms or tops and is ready to be put in game. Hopefully end of week or early next week we can get this puppy in game, and have some bastila running through it. Q and I will have to work on that.

Barracuda is rahter a poly heavy sucker, perhaps we should replace it, with a less heavy model.

Besides I believe the Barracude has some UVW issues once in the game. But anyway, its something we can easly add, perhaps via Placeables.

Guess we'll have to think about that.

Q and I are only focused on the areas for now. Because without those, there is no mod. We are not thinking to far ahead about scripting or quests. We have a main quest in mind that we want to do, but all we care about now is making the areas and getting them in game.

Once we are done that, and the entire planet that is playable is in game, we will be recruiting talented and motivated people to bring it to life.

There where some good thoughts in there, I can't promise we'll use everything as you've written it down, but it did gave cool ideas on how to fill the area in.

I figure you can, because since the planet is practically full of Hutts there has to be some Hutts that a have rancors "to settle unwanted bussines" and "entartein the guests".You could reskin an arena for this battle.

At the suggestion of Sith Holocron, I have imported a ship from dantooine into the Sley landing bay to play around with. This ship was on top of the Sandrel grounds estate, and I did not even notice it :thmbup1:

The poly count on it is VERY low, so that suits our needs awesome. I put it in the area to play around with... enjoy

Thanks for the kind words fellas, it honestly gives me motivation. As Q has often said, this is a hobby, so finding motivation to redo things over and over is often hard.

And I use to be more into 3d modeling and animation with lightwave about 10 years ago on a video toaster, but now i just stick with web development since that is my career. I bought KOTOR a few years ago and loved it, found llucasforums and saw the work Q and others were doing in modding and decided to give it a try :)

Hmm how so?

In 3dsm i just have a simple skylight to make renders nicer. In game we use the settings in the area files. In your opinion did my in game shots for the landing bay look better?

I have not gotten the complete merchant area in game yet :) I will be doing that tomorrow, WITH hopefully a working walkmesh:thmbup1:

I am having a few issues with the walkmesh for this area, grrr, so while I am waiting for Q to wake up and sober up :lol: I will post this pic.

Well, once I develop the patience needed for UVW Mapping.... then I'll have to re-learn how to use photoshop/GIMP for textures :xp:

Otherwise, that looks very, very, very nice! Makes me so very jealous, not only of the obvious free time (And the dedication to use it for this instead of slacking off :xp:) but of the skill.....

In 3dsm i just have a simple skylight to make renders nicer. In game we use the settings in the area files. In your opinion did my in game shots for the landing bay look better?

I have not gotten the complete merchant area in game yet :) I will be doing that tomorrow, WITH hopefully a working walkmesh:thmbup1:
After having another look at the in game shots, Yes the lighting looks more appropriate. I figured it was the renders. I also didn't realize some of the skybox is pretty dark when not facing the sun. Sleyheron must be a smoggy place.

The merchant area looks good. Nice job on getting the poly count lower than the docks area - no mean feat when dealing with so many rounded shapes. What is the poly count incidentally? The textures look pretty good too, although the ground texture does kind of induce a bit of eye bleed with such a wide open empty area. I imagine having a few NPCs running around and various static models will help dampen the effect.

Also, lol @ drunk Quanon. You should post drunk more often.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I will post the poly count of the merchant area once I boot everything up today.

As a petite update :lol:, I have gotten the entire merchant area in game, and you can walkie around in it. However, as expected, textures got skewed, so I will have to go back in and fix that before posting screens.

And SS, I agree with Q, you did a fantastic job restoring bioware's vision. It is allot harder to try and recreate something faithfully vs. Just having 100% creative control. As for the files, I would really be interested in that re-skinned swoop track you had done. Was it a working swoop race with Sley skins? I think Q and I would like to have a swoop race on this planet for people :)

Petite update 2:

I am going back over every piece and fixing the texture issues. Mostly related to the walls since i did it the lazy way :lol: Now i have to do twice the work, you would think I would learn.

Should have the area completely done and in game tomorrow, with screens!

Still have some texture stretching on a few windows an lights, but no big deal. We are working now to fill it with some more 3d fillers to bring it to life even more. :) Sort of like the machines did in the landing area ;)

Alrighty, as Q would say "petite update":

The textures have all been fixed, no more blurry funky textures in weird places :lol:

Also, a door has been added to the landing bay leading to the merchant area, and it works. A door has been added to the merchant area leading back to the landing area, and it works (kinda). So thats good.

Also, while waiting on Q to make some filler 3d for the market area, I decided to make a hutt statue for the landing bay. So the first thing you see when coming down the ramp from the ebon hawk is a hutt staring you in the face letting you know he owns dis place. And since all hutts look alike, it does not matter what hutt posed for this :lol:

Oh and finally, although not important, PC shadows are now showing up. Enjoy

I remember discussing the possibility of a Bochaba statue before, and I came to the conclusion that it was a better idea to have to city officials in a dialog about the cost of a statue, and then diverting the funds for the statue into their personal accounts. We felt that it reflected the atmosphere of the planet better.

But the statue would be fine anyway.

I had an idea that you could have an "information booth" but instead of general information, it would be updates for illicit crimes commissioned by the Hutt that you decide to sign on with. Until you do sign up with one, they could just tell you that they're on a spice break.

This suggestion refers to a placeable that I only remember being in KOTOR1 but it might be in KOTOR2 as well. I only recall seeing them in Davik's hangar on Taris. They were tall cylindrical objects that looked like they had neon tubes in them. The picture before technically isn't from the game but a recreation created by Inyri Forge for a JA mod but it'll give you an idea of what I'm talking about. (See area highlighted by green box.)

Hmm, I'll see if a bigger kiosk will fit somewhere. But I rather keep most "filler" on the smaller side, so that it not blocks out to much of the players path.

The Kotor games prefer a more wider path, else your party members often get stuck :lol:

One of my to do lists is to create signs, hanging from the walls, which will have some good amount of neon :)

I've good a amount of SW fonts, so expect to see some Huttsee, euh Huttingish, whatever :lol:


I really like the Hutt statue.

I'm sure the Statue will return, it just needs some tweaking :p

Q and I had already discussed making signs to put on the buildings that will have some color to them. I dont think we want a real party looking feel to it though. The place is all about oppression and crime,not a very cheery place :)

To give everyone an update, I will be sending Q my files for the merchant area in a few minutes to add in his filler, like he did with the machines in the landing bay. So I am sure we can all expect great updates from him very very fast :lol:

Okay, I might be shooting this out of nowhere, but... I have an idea of something that might be added in game. Of course, that would require some more work, but, here it goes, anyway: Sleyheyron, as I understand, is a kind of mix between Nar Shadaa and Nal Hutta: governed by hutts and with plenty of gangsters. These gangsters have to get distracted right? So how do you prevent them to kill each other while being bored? Bars, cantinas, games of Pazaak, exotic twi'lek dancers, pod/swoop races AND arena fight, why not?

I feel like kotor lack opportunities for hand to hand combat. Wouldn't it be great if there was a place in Sleheyron to battle against thugs and bandits without having to kill them? I think this might add to Sleheyron and it would perfectly fit the atmosphere of such a planet.

Expect to see some nice neon and girlz in the Cantina... dancing poles, yes that's what we need, poles with neon lights. :p

Quick comment: bioware had built 3 arenas to fight in for sley. They were actually built and left in game. I have extracted them and re created the missing walkmeshes. They are 3 diff versions. One looks like a maze arena you have to hide n seek kill in, one is a platform arena and the other I forget. As I said I have them all working in game as just eye candy. It would take some good scripting tho to make it function like a tournament.

Q and I have decided we do want a combat arena, however we have not decided if we want to use the bioware model, or create something new. I am working on modeling out the next area now, that includes the arena. So we will be crossing that bridge soon.

As for a swoop track, q and I def want a swoop track race for sley. I asked SS for the one he reskinned, but he informed me that he reskinned it and got it in game, but had issues with the times. We will figure it out because we def want a swoop track.on sley.

But that's a minor oversight, it'll be added tomorrow or tonight.
Only trouble is my ATI drivers are fighting with Max 2010.

I easlly get sort of crashes. The driver just stops working and the VPU recover feature of ATI jumps to the rescue.

Lucky for me, nothing gets lost, but its highly annoying.

No, no schism at all.

I, like you, invited SS to join our team. My issue is in his tone in coming back and approaching our project.

The original Sleheyron restoration was abandoned as far as we knew. I messaged you saying I thought you and I had the ability to make this planet actually happen. We came up with ideas, sketches, a general story idea etc. And in a little less than 2 months, you and I have created, and finished in game 2 in game areas of our planet.

He comes back, you and I both say we would like to have him join the team, and I get a PM with a storyline from him and ideas how we could "improve" our efficiency. I appriciated the enthusiasm, but informed him you and I already had a storyline general idea in our head, and what areas we were going to work on.

Then, in our WIP he posts an entire area he just went off and modeled, and said he hoped we would use it. I have a problem with this and it has nothing to do with this being "our project" or any kind of territorial thing. I had already told him we had an idea in our head. He did not ask what he could work on, did not ask even to explain what our idea was. He models an entire area on his own. So now were in a situation we would not have been in otherwise.

Now we either figure out how to use his area, or he has wasted his time in making and texturing it. If we do use his area, we may have to modify our idea. If we do not, he will be upset, and people will think were jerks for not using it. And now it seems were getting into some issues I A. did not expect we would have to deal with, and B. Do not want to deal with.

If he wants to restart his own project of restoring biowares vision, go for it. If he wants to be apart of this project and team, he needs to be less gung ho and communicate. You do not go off and model an entire area and expect it to be used. He has never asked me what our idea/vision/plan is, has he asked you?

To be perfectly blunt, this is not his project. It is our project. If he wants to join that so he can be included in that, he needs to work as a teammate. You and I send countless PMs back and forth everyday with ideas, comments, suggestions, images, download links, model files etc.

If this seems mean hearted, it is not. We picked up and ran with a dead project and have been doing a fantastic job IMO, and i honestly see us finishing this planet and releasing it. I do not want someone on the team who cannot work in a team. As I said in the beginning, i invited him to join us. If he can actually join us, cool.

And as an update: I will be posting renders of the third area you access from the north passage of the market later today.

I'm certain SithSpecter isn't planning a hostile take-over for our modding project.

If SS is as a 3D nutter as I am, he continued doing models and such, though he said he was on a modding brake. No doubt this a model he already had lingering about.

Also don't forget, I said anyone could send ideas, just like Juan did.
Of course I understand your stand point Dis; this is our little puppy.

We've agreed on a certain course of action and anyone who joins, will kind of need to accept what me and you already decieded.

Well, it's not like its carved in stone, discussion is always possible.
And euh... I kinda lost track... o_Q

Let's keep our heads cool, it would be a sad affair to get a flame war over this.

SS, don't take Dis words in a wrong way, he just really loves Sleheyron, just like you do. Just drop a word okay :p

I apologize if I was hasty in what I posted. This is an area that I had started on a long time ago, but I worked on a little bit when I saw how this project was going. The work was mainly textures and such, but I fixed and added some buildings. It's not at all complete, and I am not trying to impose anything on you, I just got excited, that's all. Again, I apologize for any confusion.

Totally agree on this. They can do what they want. Never forget they are doing this mostly for fun/distraction (yeah, after all, they aren't paid, so no obligation...). And when the fun dies, whatever the reason, it might be reason enough for one to just stop believing he should continue.

Not really, not because the model is ugly or something, but off the style differance.

Go back to what Dis has made cylinder buildings look like, and those seen in SithSpecters render. You'll notice that its quiete differant.

Me and Dis early on decided to go for a very coherent look. We want the player, not to see the differance of who modelled what. To the best of our abilities.

It's the main reason, why Disbeliever is doing all the outdoors, its a really balancing act to get our stuff nicely together.

Perhaps a bit of odd point, as it has not much to do with actuall modding, but I'm crazy like that about visuall stuff :p

Now, SS dropped his little bomb, main reason Dis didn't like the attitude is this was in the public. Nor is it the way me and Dis do things.

We got our method on how to agree on how stuff is going to look. All via a heavy PM-ing.

I understand my partners concern, though I perceived Sithspecters post differantly. Less offensive.

Now I won't say more about it all, work continues, even with these bumps on the road. No doubt we'll sort it out all for the best of the mod and the community.

I'dd hate to have to turn this into a soap opera of sorts... >_<

Edit: I have pulled in biowares arena to compare sizes in 3dsm. Our arena is taller, and biowares is slightly fatter. All in all I think the size is ok, I will be tweeking the arena though, to make it wider to show more size.

Update: Area is complete. We call this area the "rich" area, as it has 2 rival hutts palace's, and the grand arena :lol: I have enlarged the arena and palaces to give it an even more towering look. Will be 2 posts due to pics, sorry mods.

And Edit: This area has even less polys that the other 2 :lol: I must be improving. It stands, as seen in shots below, at 28000 polys
