Stopping the flaming boat

Is there a trick to getting the flaming boat to stop right under Meathook's wax-covered painting? I cram the appropriate object into the mechanism, and the boat seems to be stopped right under the painting, but the wax doesn't melt. I am not getting better with each repetition. Any help would be appreciated.
