View Full Version : [WIP] Mass Effect Weapons

As some of you may know, I recently released a Mass Effect weapon mod (http://lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=203980). I had always intended to do more, so I started work on a second model last night. This thread will serve as WIP for any further Mass Effect weapons I make.

The next model on the list is the Carnifex Hand Cannon (the pistol from Mass Effect 2). All the Mass Effect 2 versions of the weapons are just slightly different from the Mass Effect 1 versions, usually more in the way they're textured rather than their shape. In any case, see below for my current progress and a reference image of the ME2 and ME1 versions of this gun:

Image on the left is with 100% self illumination (meaning all shading comes from the texture. Image on the right is with 0% self illumination.

I am mainly interested in opinions on the size. I have one opinion that it's good, and I do think it's roughly comparable with the size from Mass Effect 2, but I'm open to other opinions.

And haha, I just realized the OCX is supposed to be OXC. I'll fix that. >.>

TBH, my first impulse was that they were too big.....as the hands seem to be swimming in the weapon almost. After going back into ME2 and using FRAPS to capture a pic of a Carnifex in Miranda's grip for comparison, it actually seems pretty much to scale. So, now you have at least two "goods".

I know they're roughly to scale (I'll have to compare a little bit more to be more confident) but I'm not sure I like them that big, even if it's accurate. I'm thinking of seeing how they look scaled down a little and then deciding. They looked pretty clunky in ME imo.

No kidding, I think that they would work better in a smaller version.

Yeah, but I didn't initially, which was why I checked. Didn't pay much attention to that weapon in ME2 b/c I usually used the shotgun or heavier weapons. I was thinking that shaving it down to maybe 75% +/- probably would look better in KOTOR/TSL.

Well the texturing is excellent but i suppose since ME2 has way better models the size looks better in that game. But if you decrease the size does that take away the clarity of the weapon and make it blurry. Even though it looks better than what the game has now on its own.

Reducing the model size won't really make it blurry, just smaller. Changing the texture size might make it blurry, but I won't need to do that. :)

To me, slightly smaller would look better.

I also like Darth Payne's idea as well, a heavy and light version.

Aesthetically, I think that it could be a bit smaller. Your screenshot shows it in the hands of a male soldier, and it looks too big. I can only imagine how huge it would look in the hands of a female scoundrel.

Why not keep one version as it is now, and another that is smaller?

By letting the player choose which version to use you can satisfy all fans.

Edit: Hey, maybe the smaller version could be a Compact Model used by Assasins and such? There are a couple of pistols in K1 that are smaller than the others.

I second this...You could make a small "holdout" version, then have a bigger "heavy" version.

But if you want to keep one model then I say make it a little bit smaller.

I second this. I also agree with Darth Payne about releasing 2 versions to choose from ... maybe one slightly smaller that the original and another to replace some of those tiny hold out blasters out there which share same mdl?

about the self illumination I suppose it's possible to set it to 75% or so instead of 100%? 0% looks way too dark to distinguish the texture details.

If Inyri's gonna release it as a NEW weapon then it's reasonable to keep the original size, and maybe a slightly smaller one; but if she's gonna release the models to replace others in-game then they should be smaller IMHO :raise: ...

anyone with me? :)

There's no reason I can't offer both. Will probably do that.

Been playing Prince of Persia this week, but I'm done with that so I'll work on making a smaller version shortly to see how it looks.

Inyri you are quite honestly a God. Not only are these weapons beautifully modelled, I'm glad to see that you have such good taste. The Mass Effect games are the best games ever made, so it's nice to see the weapons being made for KOTOR. :)

PS. I wonder if the M920-Cain (the mini nuke launcher lol) would be possible?

A fitting ammo type for that one would be force lightning, i think.

PS. I wonder if the M920-Cain (the mini nuke launcher lol) would be possible?I already had that discussion with Rogue Nine. I think we'd probably have to compromise on the ammo. :p

Also, if you guys want to give suggestions for your other favorite ME weapons go ahead and start listing them. Will need to start work on my next one tomorrow methinks. :)

Am thinking possible the Widow (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/M-98_Widow) next. Thoughts?

The Widow is cool gun.

Perhaps restricting it to just HK and/or Zaalbar will keep it more inline with ME2?

But the widow is my favourite weapon in the whole game!
(Probably because I love sniping)

yeah, i definately prefer the smaller version, it really looks awesome now!
I'm not sure about other weapons, hmm, i'd love to see one of the heavy weapons, and the Cain is only cool cause of the ammo, but the Blackstorm Projector looks cool as a weapon, dunno if it's ammo would work, cause have never used it in ME2, and don't know KOTOR's limitations very well. The Arc Projector and the Avalanche both look cool as well. If you don't want to do heavy weapons, the Battle Rifle would be cool.

In update pic looks like it fits OK in both male or female hands :) ... even an additional slightly smaller version would be great as I said before to replace those ugly tiny pistol models but that's just me ... :xp:

can we expect so soon a KotOR version besides TSL one? :thmbup1:

oh and this ME widow thing looks amazing so far and more than appropiate for HK47 right? :raise:

Awesome sniper rifle, don't recognise it though. I only ever used the default one, cause i didn't like the quicker firing, weaker one. Is this that or the special one? (i got the LMG)
But yeah, you're doing a great job so far, the sniper rifle's beautifully modelled, should look awesome skinned. For some reason i imagine it as being dark grey and red, dunno why. Obviously, do it how it is in ME2.

The description in the game actually says something about it snapping the wielder's arms when they try to fire it, as I recall. :p

Perhaps it should either have the Force Sensitive requirement, or a decrease in accuracy or something like that.

Great work with these. Are you planing on doing any of the Sniper Rifles, as in the model that Hammer, Avenger and Titan share? I know the folding thing can't really be done, but that is still a cool model.

This is a bit off-topic, so delete it if you want, but:

I'm setting up my next kotor playthrough, and want to try and prevent myself from making the game unbalanced through mods. To try and stop that happening, i'm using all the (decent) weapon models i can find to REPLACE ingame items, rather than adding new ones. I can do this, it's not hard, but i'm just checking if for example the Avenger could be used to replace a Repeating Blaster rather than a blaster rifle, what are the "rules" for this kind of thing? Can all one handed gun types interchange models? what about 2 handed guns, and swords?

Revenant LMG is more suitable for Repeater replacement. Since in ME2 it's also better to fire the more damaging gun in burst fire, rather than full auto like blaster rifle.

You should be able to just rename the models. All the gun models share the same basic setup so they should be interchangeable, at the model level.

I agree with you, this looks like it fits both the large male and small female body sizes. The length of the female's forearm vs the length of the gun matches the ref pic of Jack with the hand cannon.

Let me know if anything looks really inaccurate. My ref pics weren't as good this time so I kind of guessed on some of it.

I haven't seen very many ref pics either, but it does look fairly accurate to those that I have seen.

If you're gonna do another sniper rifle, how about the M-92 Mantis Sniper Rifle? It has that quintessential ME2 look, similar to the M-8.

I just finished UV mapping the Widow so I'll be working on the texture probably over the next few days. While I'm doing that, any thoughts on which weapon type it should be/replace? There isn't exactly a real sniper rifle in the KotOR games.

What I'll do eventually when I have enough made is actually make them custom weapons. As I release them individually I'm just doing replacements.

Just an update. I'm only about half done with the texture, but I think it's okay enough to show. As always, feel free to crit. The white bits are areas where the paint has worn away. I'm planning on using an environment map there to make them shine which should look pretty cool if I do it right.

Well making the .uti is always better IMO 'cause you can just rename it to replace whatever you wish (replacing the Sith Sniper Rifle or whatever), or keep the new weapon instead (like a personal sniper rifle for HK47 as suggested here) ... :)

oh and I like a lot those white areas with paint worn away, an unexpected very cool 'touch' indeed from your part ... :thmbup1:

Looks great, but I couldn't see in the video its distance to the floor. I've seen a few weapons actually "inserted" into the ground when holding them in rest position ... :raise: and that might be a minor annoyance ...

sure it doesn't touch the ground? what about females who are normally shorter? :)

Edit (6/6/10): I don't think I'm going to make any more ME models right now (unless someone has a burning desire for something I haven't made yet and can convince me I want to make it). What I need before I wrap this up is some input from you guys. First, do you want me to release the Widow on its own as a replacement the way I have it set up now? If not, what my plan is is to take these three weapons and put them in-game legitimately.

What I need is some input on where to place them and what stats to give them (for KotOR1 and TSL). If I don't get any input I'll have to figure it out myself, and at that point there'll be more of a chance that it'll conflict with your guys' favorite mods since I probably don't use them and am not familiar with them. So leave your two cents. Thanks.

If you add the Master Sniper Shot instead of Improved, I'd reduce the Damage Bonus Energy-Damage 1d12 to 1d8 or so otherwise it will be a little overpowered.
* placement: I know it sounds odd but if you want full compatibility you can just add the new rifle to merchants like Dahnis at Nar Shaddaa (kexsstore003.utm) or Akkere at Dantooine (store_adum001.utm). They don't sell weapons exactly that's why no one modifies that ... also human Geg at Onderon (store_geg.utm) although this one is more likely to have been edited. And I'd set a price from 500 to 1100 to the rifle otherwise it will be hard to get the credits ah?

Free widows deliver in this case? ... otherwise, you have Junix Nard selling stuff (kas_junixstore.utm) in Tatooine's cantina, other unique utm too, and not much used IMO.

Your ME weapons look great I've been using the Avenger model you made and it's great. Personally I think it's better to make the items unique instead of replacements. For adding them into the game I would suggest scripting.

I've used guns whose sounds are pretty damned close to the Revanants, in my opinion that is.

Maybe I've just played ME2 too much but the Revenant doesn't seem like a good fit for a KotOR game to me. Unless there was a way to make it always have a rapid fire animation regardless of the skill or attack being used.

But for putting the weapons in the game with TSL at least you could just use Itemcreate.2da (http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=144381&highlight=itemcreate.2da) it's the easiest way I've seen to add a new item to the game.

Yeah, we're at 4 right now: the M-8 rifle, the hand cannon, the Widow, and the Revenant. I don't anticipate there being more than this (at least right now) because the rest of the designs don't excite me enough to want to spend the limited time I have available working on them.

That's awesome! I'll get right to modifying the gun to be more accurate. I didn't remember the red bits actually sticking out like that.

Edit: Only had a short chance to work on it a little bit tonight. Needed to change the color the make it a little bit more visible. I figured you'd all like it this way.

Bit of an update guys. Haven't done any more work on the Revenant since the last update (sorry, things have been busy) but I did get the hand cannon together for release. K1 and K2 versions available on my website. K1 version is up on KotORFiles and K2 version has been submitted. Enjoy!

Easy way for K1 - Yavin Station. Suvam has rather unique gear, and I don't know of any mods that change his store, so these would fit.

For K2, Telos TSF Station locker maybe. Or Samhan's 'special goods'.

I think I was done with the model before I touched it today, but this should be about the final iteration. Next comes texturing, which is my favorite part, but for some reason I really don't want to do this one lol. UV mapping is just so boring... but so necessary. >.>

Anyway, still accepting suggestions for where to place these in-game. I also need suggestions for stats. I'd like them usable, but they shouldn't be hideously overpowered. ...unless you would like them hideously overpowered.

Well, I think you shouldn't make them hideously overpowered, that can just throw away the game balance, if someone want them overpowered, they can just open Kotor Tool, and edit it (like me, but i'm a special case... all the items on my game are overpowered, I changed the balance to a more dangerous one...).

This one could be find on a HK type droid in K2, since they really like the sniper type weapons, and in K1, you could just replace the sith sniper rifle.

Maybe Sherruk the Mandalorian on Dantooine can be weilding the revanent. As far as replacement goes, maybe the blaster carbine or something because it just sucks. Also want to say I've never been interested in this thread because I'm not a ME guy, but that revanent is just so cool that I have to get my hands on it.

About replacement, I'd like to see in TSL the Revenant instead some of these, although I dunno how many utis will be affected by a single mdl/mdx overwrite (listed in order):

1. Combat Enforcer w_brifle_16 (model sucks)
2. Onderon Repeating Carbine w_brifle_26
3. Heavy Repeating Rifle w_brifle_22
4. Heavy Repeating Carbine w_brifle_17
5. Arkanian Blaster Rifle w_brifle_12
6. Repeating Blaster Carbine w_brifle_06

Jeez, is that the Valiant? Hell yes, I'd like-it! Though I personnally doesn't have any experience doing that, I can't help but wonder if you have any other in the oven? I think sith specter had a mod for kotor1 that made crazy explosions too, with a missile launcher. I wonder if one could start from the explosion effect and make the M-920 Cain?

I'm already working on an updated version of the Carnifex I already made. Adding a silencer to it wouldn't be much of an extra time expenditure. It's the updated texture that would take the longest.

As the Star Wars universe uses Aurebesh (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Aurebesh) instead of any standard Earth alphabet, had you any plans to create alternate skins for your Mass Effect weapons to better fit into the KOTOR Universe? If I'm not mistaken, you've done this with at least one of your guns before.

except that that's Jurgan Kalta's blaster carbine ... and that's an extremely rare piece of weaponry in Kotor. Not even this "guy" from Yavin 4 space station have it in its inventory on a single interaction ... that said; to cheat Jurgan Kalta's carbine to inventory call cheat console and type giveitem g_w_blstrcrbn004 and ENTER.

That's it ... oh, and I also replaced the 7th blaster carbine model ... that however (g_w_blstrcarbn007) is NOT being added to inventory by cheating for some reason. That's another version of Jurgan Kalta's carbine, never understood or took a serious 'look' on HOW these different variants of the same weapon work in-game :raise:

The different variants are because of the item upgrades placed inside, at least going by the other weapons, like Yusani's Ritual Brand...
