View Full Version : Back at the gate in the swamp...

I am having trouble giving key and other items back to myself so I can get through the gate a second time without messing up the space time continuum.

I have jumped through the hoops to open the gate the first time, follow the time directions around the swamp, but when I get back to the gate, I can’t talk to myself, unlock the gate from my side, or give the key to myself on the other side (which is what I think I need to do). Is there some weird command to do this or a strange position I need to be in…It took me a while to wiggle up next to the gate the first time to get it open the first time.

Or do I need to do something else first?

Thanks for the help.

I think I did that. It was:

Talk
Key
Rope
Gun
Talk
Open Gate
Chicken Pulley

I did note that it changed some times, but I was keeping track of that. I’ll keep trying, but it is like that game stops functioning at this point…that and I can’t figure out how to give something…I’ll talk and then nothing happens…I'll try and select the key and use it (give it) but I don’t think I am doing the commands properly. I want a give object button! What is the proper procedure to give something? I guess that is what I can't do.

Thanks.

You might have a bug that sometimes occurs here. Try to reload an earlier saved game and start from there.

No Luck, I still have the same problem. My only options seem to be:

Talk to Guy
Open Gate
Use Key
Use Key on Gate

When I talk nothing happens
Open gate - it is locked
Use Key - you need a lock
Use key on gate – can’t reach it…

Any suggestions? I played the game from back in the town up to the swamp in case it was a glitch…

Thanks

I think I am dong something dumb like not “talking correctly.” Is there a trick to this? I think I should talk first, but then nothing happens and I don’t have any options on what to say…

Thanks

First of all, I don't think you tell the truth when you say that nothing happens!

Because that means that your computer locks up completly and you have to reboot!
Something happens but what?
Are you whirled back to the beginning of the swamp, can you select a text line, do you get ANY response when you try to do something?

To say that NOTHING HAPPENS doesn't provide us much info to help you.

You have to make a note of how items were given at the first meeting, also select the correct text otherwise you can't continue at the second visit.

Everything has to be repeated in correct order the second time you arrive at the gate!

I click on “talk…”
He jams his pole into the swamp and stands there, and time goes by... That is it. I don’t get any pop up options, like “say…” and I can’t figure out if I should be doing something to get these up. As soon I try to do anything, he picks up the pole and I am back where I started. If I leave the board it starts over, of course, but I think there is a command that I do not know how to use to get him o actually interact with the other character.

For the record (and because I just got a double post) I am playing this on a Mac OS, if there are any bugs...

Will I not get text options if I am missing certain inventory items? i.e. if I didn’t have the “whatever” I won’t be able to proceed…Just curious

Thanks.

Geee, Why thanks…

I actually have spent some time on boards like this. I am actually a big fan of the UBB system. I find that it is much more user friendly than other BB’s. Thanks for the Kudos (spelling?) though Niko…

Now if I could just get this door open...

There are two things you can do.

Go to http://support.lucasarts.com/ and download the patch 1.1 and/or reinstall the game again!

Cool, Thanks for the help...I don't think there is a patch for the Mac version of this...I looked on the www.aspyr.com (http://www.aspyr.com) site (the company that made this a mac game). I'll try reinstalling the game and see if that helps.

Thanks again.

No Luck... I reinstalled the game, but i still have the same problem...

Maybe I'm just not doing something right, but i am never given the option to give stuff to the other guy or once I talk, what to say...

Oh well

Thanks again for trying...

to give him the item, use the item on him. i noticed you didn't mention you tried that in your list. you said you used it on the door and by itself and everything, but try using it on Guybrush (the other one) thats how you give it to him. i am on a Mac too.

I have a mac and the same problems as gooch. There is not an option "use key with guy" or whastsoever. Gooch described the problem pretty well.

Solution:
could somebody (Bongo Man •hint hint) upload a save right after passing the swamp please?

Sorry to hear that you you guys are having trouble with the MAC OS, I too have a Mak and have not had any trouble. Maybe I have a different version of the game? Anyway, good luck getting past the gate.

Hey Bongo Man,

Could you email me a copy of the saved game…That would be great, since I can’t get past this part…I can’t make the game give me the “give key (or whatever) to Guybrush” command…Sorry that I haven’t responded lately, I was away from my computer.

My email is needgame@hotmail.com

Thanks.

Hi Iam on a mac also and I seem to be experiencing the same problem which gooch is. I have done the same things which gooch went thru and I have also applied the recent monkey Island update for the mac, but it still does not work. Maybe someone who has played the game on a mac without problems would be kind enough to send me a saved game just after the second time at the swamp gate ( that is th problem area)......
my e-mail is mswedding@hotmail.com
Thanks again

Are you playing this on a Mac?

Manock

Whoa boy
and i was just thinking that i was doing something wrong. It's just a bug. Well I believe there was someone with a mac who DID get past it. I want to know how. Do you do it with 32 bit colors? a joystick? Does the raft seem to be rotating around some point or around its own axis?

Manock
06-03-2001, 09:47 PM
Alright!!!! I done it. I just got the latest update at Aspyr, I deleted all my save states and started all over again, and it worked. Now the raft rotates around its own axis as it should do, so I can get close enough to the gate. So if you can't approach the gate, get the update or start over.

When you have it right, go follow the clues until you see yourself, note the order in which you gave the items to yourself. Then you will not open the gate because you think it might be a trick. Note the number you are thinking of, then open the gate, and then continue your journey. When you see yourself, give the items in the proper order (for some reason, I kept the gun), tell him the number you're thinking of, and continue.

1.1.1 yes
but I don't know if that's the solution, I just deleted all my saves and started over.

Well, I'm long past that spot, but for all those mac using people in trouble, I think I can get there, but first try to get there yourself.

Just making sure that you know that you can pull up your inventory before you talk. You can then select the key and give it to your past self. The conversation with it should match the previous one. I think after that you need to pass the chicken or something before actualy ingaging in conversation.

We all know that by now, but that doesn't take away the fact that there is a bug in the game

Hello guys this is my first post at this FORUM.
Thank god I found something on net about this bug which happens with me too . I've been looking for the answer to this all over the net. It also happens to me , Guybrush tries to stick his pole into the swampo but it doesn't stop and the action doesn't complete. by the way , I play the PC version game with no patches , I suppose it's a rare bug .
Moreover , it does seem only a few of you experience this. Guys , can someaone send me a PC save game just after the swamp? The patch solution does not make me sure. IF someone can , send me a e-mail please
Í'm brief because I don't have time to read post message everyweek , only emais . Thanks guys, this is the first discussion I notice it didn't happen only with me and there was a way to get past http://www.escapemi.com/forums/smile.gif

Try to Uninstall from the Options Menu but keep the saved games when asked.
Reinstall, reload the patch, recheck the settings for your graphic and start from Deadeye Daves place.

I have the same problem playing from a WindowsME system. I've found that if I hold the enter key down when wanting to talk to the other Guybrush (while the Talk to Guybrush option is highlighted), I can talk to him. If I hold down the I key for inventory, I see the inventory overhead. The inventory won't rotate, until I pause the game using the space bar, then I wait for the option prompt and I can move among the inventory items. Choosing one (like the key, or anything else) and getting Guybrush to open the door, is another tough matter completely. I haven't gotten through the whole scene, yet.

I'm so relieved that I'm not the only person with this glitch. Thanks, all!

I've found that sometimes the game can be very picky in the order which you take care of major events... it's almost as if the programmers thought about the puzzles in a very linear fashion, so you might have to solve the puzzles in the order which they intended, or else the sound might not work properly, in that when you speak, or when someone else speaks, entire sentences might be skipped, and you're left not knowing what to do next.

Start from an earlier save of the game, re-solving some of the puzzles in a different order before going back to the swamp (preferrably in the order which the walkthroughs tell you, if you don't have a walkthrough, try GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/)), and see then go back to the swamp.

Well, I had the same problem with my system, a brand new Athalon 1.3 GB PC running Windows 98 on a Gforce 3. How I got around it was to install MI4 on my work computer, load my save game from home - play through the glitch area, save the game, and reinstall the new save game at home. This worked, and I could carry on. If you need the save game, I still have it at work. Let me know.
